Instructions for filling out the Academy Awards 2003 form:

I'd love to hear your thoughts—if you had to pick, what would be your top three candidates for:

Topic of the Year
Post of the Year
Forum user of the year

And as an extra little touch, you could always throw in a special award, just like you can see in the examples we've laid out here.

Topic of the year
It’s pretty simple, really—just drop a link to the very first page of that topic.

Forum user of the year
Please provide the name of the forum user you would like me to write about.

Post of the Year
It’s a little complicated... but honestly, it isn't exactly rocket science.
If you happen to come across a post that you feel is the absolute best, just make sure to jot down its number so you have it handy. Post number Just try hovering your cursor over the link first! I'm ready to get to work! Just send over the text you need me to rewrite, and I'll handle everything—re-crafting the voice, swapping out all the references to make it feel authentically American, and ensuring every single specific substitution is applied exactly as you've instructed. Standing by for your first post. I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that—it looks like you might have sent an incomplete message! If there was something specific you wanted me to rewrite or a particular topic you wanted me to dive into, just let me know and I'll get right on it. I think I might have misread the room a little bit there—it looks like you’re just looking for a quote! Since there wasn't any specific text provided to work with, I'm standing by and ready to go whenever you have something you want me to transform. Just toss it my way! Which ones are located down in the bottom right corner of the post. U Just a quick update on my current status! (It appears in the bottom left corner of the window frame) a caption pops up that ends with postid=xxxxx Where is it? xxxxx The number of this specific post. To be precise, the number of this post is 986607.

Keep doing exactly what you're doing—just like when you're pasting a link, go ahead and drop this text right into the address bar instead:

xxxxx #postxxxxx

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that—it feels like a sentence left hanging mid-air! Could you clarify what you were trying to say? I'd love to catch up on the conversation if you can give me a little more context. xxxxx Just type in the number of that post.

Please, let's try to refrain from commenting on everyone else's suggestions or critiquing people's individual choices—I really don't want us to get ahead of ourselves and derail the topic right from the start.

I’ll leave the criteria for these suggestions entirely up to your own personal judgment: whether a certain Forum user, a specific topic, or just one particular post actually made you laugh, taught you something new, or completely blew your mind.

If you find that the instructions aren't quite clicking yet, please feel free to check out the details over on this page. topic.
If you feel like sharing your thoughts on these picks, please feel free to jump in! Here it is..

I actually have a copy right here in Chicago.

Robert Wood2 said:I think there’s some movie out there on the global market—I can't quite recall the title—about that Sid guy from the Sex Pistols (if I remember correctly, it might even be named after him)... I watched it ages ago, probably about a thousand years back, and if my memory serves me right through the haze, it felt like some kind of trashy, low-budget flick...

Oh man, how could I have completely blanked on "Almost..."? I think I've probably watched that one at least five times now.

Oh, they definitely exist.

"This Is Spinal Tap" — honestly the greatest cult classic ever made, just perfect at poking fun at heavy metal culture.

"Fear of the Black Hat" — a hilarious jab at the whole hip-hop scene.

"Hour Party People" — this one tracks everything from punk to acid house, capturing that legendary music scene vibe with bands like Joy Division, Mondaysi, and New Order.

I've got Mystic River arriving this Friday, though I'll have to wait until the end of next month to finally catch Kill Bill. 😠

Sophia Evans76 said:Most of the movies you guys listed actually came out last year (unless you count Gary Sanchez, who seems to be pulling titles from the previous millennium entirely)... the thing is, here in the States, we often see these hits lagging behind by a good chunk of time compared to when they first drop.😕

The whole trick is how movies released during the fall and winter seasons in the US—you know, those prestige films aiming for the major awards—don't really hit our local theaters until well after the Oscars have passed. It’s basically just a way to grab extra publicity or give them a little boost in viewership if they managed to snag a nomination. Around here, unless it's a massive blockbuster, the media coverage is pretty thin, and all the actual marketing is just concentrated in big cities like New York or LA.
Plus, our autumn and winter seasons are usually reserved for the summer blockbusters because everyone is away on vacation during the warmer months.

Honestly, the biggest mess this year was with "Bowling for Columbine" and "The Hours." Both of those were delayed significantly—especially the latter, which was held up for over six months due to Director Daldry's personal request—just so they could make sure they had a spot at the big festivals.

A lot of movies slated for release end up getting pushed back too, simply because they can't secure a decent slot in any theater (our national cinema chains have shrunk so shamefully over the last few years).

I finally sat down and watched it.

It’s honestly such a great movie. Someone looking for something lighthearted might be a bit shaken by how much violence there is or the age of the main characters—but if you look past every gunshot, every explosion, and every swing of a blade, there’s a deeper point being made about things that are far more terrifying than physical harm. Sure, there’s a certain twisted vibe to the high school girls with machine guns imagery, but the violence isn't treated as something "cool" or stylized; instead, it feels raw and disturbingly realistic, no matter how intense it gets.

The final third might not quite hit the same highs as the first two acts, but the strengths of this film definitely outweigh its flaws.
gabal said:As a history major with a massive soft spot for old sailing ships, I was absolutely floored by this movie. It feels incredibly authentic, capturing what life was actually like on a smaller naval vessel back in the early 1800s with such impressive attention to detail.

Honestly, they leaned into the details so hard that you can practically smell the salt spray and weathered wood on the deck.

I remember reading somewhere that historians are still scratching their heads over how those tough sailors managed to survive months at sea without any company from the fairer sex. I don't think the film quite tackled that mystery, though!

😁😁
dustywolf32 said:He’s chasing after that ship like a man possessed, but then suddenly he just changes his mind because the doctor’s injuries get handled in such an absurd way, and all of a sudden, the whole vessel doesn't even matter to him anymore.

Well, that's because he's the only doctor on board! I mean, honestly, who else is going to patch them up once they run headfirst into the Acheron?

dustywolf32 said:I don't really get the point of Hollo - Jona - why does it have to be Hollo - Jona who is "blaspheming against God," rather than, say, an atheist scientist, which would have actually made for a real plot twist.

I think the movie actually did a pretty decent job explaining why that is the case.

By the way, being a scientist doesn't automatically make someone an atheist... just because he's a naturalist doesn't mean he's out there "blaspheming against God."
"Savage" - honestly, every single time I catch a glimpse of it on TV, I find myself glued to the screen until the very end, just sitting there wondering why nobody seems capable of writing a script with that kind of depth and caliber anymore.
hobbit said:The movie is actually based on the books by Patrick O'Brian, who wrote quite a massive collection of them.

He actually started writing the series back in 1971.
This particular film is an adaptation of the tenth novel—though they shifted the setting from 1812 to 1805—and the title itself was pulled right from the very first book in the series.

I honestly think this might be one of the best films released all year. In fact, I’m starting to lean toward it being Paul Thomas Anderson's absolute best work yet.

The casting of Adam Sandler was just pure genius—I truly can't imagine anyone else playing Barry Egan quite like him.
It’s such a breath of fresh air to finally see something different after being stuck with all those movies where characters just beat the hell out of each other in black leather while some high-octane techno track blasts in the background.

Honestly, looking back on it, "Master..." actually feels almost therapeutic—I think I might just go ahead and watch it again.
