I’m genuinely stumped here—could you please explain to me how this topic actually fits under the Health category?
Because, aside from the silly nature of the thread itself, the actual questions were: "would they laugh or cry..." and "what should be done..."
If you are still intent on keeping this discussion alive, its rightful place is in the Psychology section.
..I have been reading in several news outlets lately about a new "illness" emerging in the "world"—a disorder, or whatever they call it—regarding an obsession with health. They mentioned what it was called, but I cannot recall the specific term.
There was even one of those yes/no tests... and well, I came back "positive" with a very high score.😢
The questions were things like: do you spend more than two hours a day obsessing over what you are going to eat... and so on.
My father passed away from cancer recently—as did half my extended family—and ever since then, I have become completely obsessed. Initially, I decided to simply eat "healthy." Which meant cutting out: deli meats, fast food, hot dogs... things of that nature. Oh, and the plan was: I will eat vegetables, fruit... whole grains... that sort of thing. But then the obsession escalates, and you find yourself standing in the grocery store aisle staring intensely at a bag of frozen peas, thinking to myself, "Ah, frozen... the label says that isn't recommended..." and then you just move on. Then there is fish... frozen... I can't eat that, it might be old. Milk?! PLEASE. IT SAYS RIGHT THERE: humans are the only mammals that drink milk. And eggs?! I am not crazy enough to eat eggs... eggs are poison. Then you read somewhere that deodorants cause breast cancer, so of course, I would rather smell bad; I have developed a phobia regarding using deodorant, spending five minutes agonizing over whether I should apply it right now or not...
Saccharin?! It is nice because it has no calories... but your hand actually starts to tremble the moment you are tempted to put it in your coffee. Coffee?! My greatest vice.😢 Perhaps the only normal way I view a food item, because I don't have a phobia regarding coffee, and like any sane person, I don't sit there ruminating on whether it is healthy or unhealthy. .... Not to mention that once this obsession takes hold, it leads to reading the ingredient labels on jarred peppers, worrying that a pickle isn't right for your sensitive stomach and that you will develop an ulcer in five years because of it, or the conviction that instant coffee is toxic because it contains "additives."
...The point of this thread is not for people to come forward with theories like "eggs are/are not healthy"... or "cancer isn't caused by diet, but by stress"... so I ask that we do not let the discussion veer in the wrong direction; please, rather not post at all. And yes, ...of course, NO ONE needs to tell me that this obsession is abnormal, and because of that, I CERTAINLY am not going to a psychiatrist if anyone happens to think that idea is necessary.
So, essentially, I am interested in two things: Are there other people like me here?
..The fact remains that this is not an addiction; it is simply a state of mind. This is how I want to live. If I didn't want this, well, I wouldn't. Is it a problem that I *want* this?! An obsession??! I cannot bring myself to eat a hot dog because I don't want to; I have a guilty conscience...
.. And I also hold somewhat extreme views because, out of respect for people who, for example, die from lung cancer, I cannot ignore what happened to them by choosing to smoke. Because, I mean, people smoke... because when they start, they don't think about the consequences, but they don't stop later just because statistics—say, 1 in 100—tell them they are among the 99 lucky ones. Would they stop if they knew their future was that "1"? They would, IMMEDIATELY. Still, I do not want reactions from smokers. I am not attacking anyone. Because, I am admittedly an extreme case. 🙄
And the second thing I am wondering about: I truly cannot decide whether this is okay, or if I should stop doing it. ...Perhaps I am just wired this way and cannot be happy any other way... I think about it less and simply don't eat hot dogs, because honestly, there is nothing strange about that.
Live and let live... okay. That is my mantra. Kill yourselves if you must.😁
People say... both ways have their advantages. Do they??! The advantage being rushing toward an early death?! To that, they say: fate is fate, you might die from one puff of smoke... And the true advantage is the relaxed life of these "normal" people... but then again, a person with an obsession like mine does not want an ignorant existence. ...
Everything in my life essentially revolves around one stance: OUT OF RESPECT FOR THOSE PEOPLE...
And so... this has somehow spiraled into one massive monologue, ha...🙂👋
Are you practicing Christians, or is this just an evocative stance? A woman asks for advice, a woman thinks, and a woman decides—just look at www.nytimes.com And if you fall into that first category, well, you could have expressed that sentiment much more subtly. It always strikes me as odd when people take issue with decisions without offering a viable solution. Let us consider a hypothetical scenario: if a woman actually listens to you, what exactly is your next move? Come on, young men—who is going to marry her, put her through college, and help her raise that Child to be a decent human being? 😬 (I haven't exactly seen any of you volunteering.)
That is true... though it isn't always what "smart" men have to say. Perhaps abortion is murder, and while it might be nature's way for everything conceived to be born, nature didn't account for university tuition, expensive apartments, and tiny living spaces... did it?!
AND COMPARING THE HOLOCAUST TO THIS?!?! :flop
By that definition, are you suggesting that every human being is entirely predetermined solely by genetics?! As if years of growth, experience, emotions, and the actual LIFE lived until death don't matter at all:
Peter Myers29 said:A woman's body doesn't just end where a child's begins—it's an intersection. And a Child isn't some mere object; they are a human being living their own life, which exists fully even while within the mother's womb. Life commences at conception, not at birth—though many, particularly those advocating for abortion, seem to believe otherwise. In these instances, the only "fault" of the Child is simply existing—having been created by chance, or perhaps through someone else's lack of caution.
There is another point to consider... Those who claim to be capable of true love, yet destroy the very thing that requires the most devotion—their unborn Child—are being dishonest. Their version of "love" is nothing more than a selfish pursuit of self-interest—money, career advancement, and so on. Someone truly capable of loving is capable of sacrifice; there is no greater love in this world than that of a mother.
Furthermore, people often bring up the Holocaust—referring to how 6 million Jews were murdered by Hitler during World War II. But I ask you: how many abortions have been performed since the dawn of time? How many lives have been lost because of the choices of their own mothers before they ever had a chance to be born? Far, far more!...
Look, either move this to another thread or start your own—just don't dump these clichés here... THIS IS NOT THE SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD...
Once you actually open your own thread, I will be happy to comment on what you wrote above.😎
Hey everyone, I was watching an episode of Oprah the other day—this nutritionist or whatever his title was—and he made this claim:
"Don't touch coffee for six weeks; instead, switch to green tea, and I guarantee you’ll drop 10 pounds..." He explained that coffee spikes insulin production, which essentially makes it easier for sugars to bind—leading to that whole "frying" process where we just end up gaining weight.
Yet, just recently, I read something entirely different in a major news outlet: that coffee actually boosts your metabolism by about 5-10%, making it a perfect tool for dieting.
I honestly don't think people realize how conflicting this all is. I've heard from countless sources that coffee accelerates metabolism—in fact, I am literally holding a recent medical journal right now that states: "...Caffeine acts as a stimulant on the metabolism. It releases fatty acids and allows them to be utilized during physical activity. While fat is being used as an energy source, carbohydrate consumption decreases, allowing blood sugar levels to remain elevated for longer, while increased glucose helps suppress appetite. This is why caffeine is frequently found in various weight-loss supplements." ....And of course, I believed that completely—UNTIL I heard this doctor on Oprah present his opposing theory... so,
Does anyone actually know the truth behind what that guy on Oprah said? He was citing "expert data"—not personal experience, mind you!!!! (Because, let's be honest, I definitely have to run to the restroom after my coffee, but I highly doubt that wouldn't happen regardless...😁 )
( By the way—if coffee is supposedly "healthy," what exactly is the benefit? I still lean toward the idea that it might be better to avoid it altogether... but since you've essentially argued that there are actual health benefits to drinking it... *for what, exactly?
ZOsvald said:Is a carrot actually healthy? YES — they contain vitamins. 👍 NO — they can trigger vitamin toxicity (the body struggles to process Vitamin A quickly enough—which leads to headaches and... well, let's just say gastrointestinal distress)👍
So, what’s the verdict? — it all comes down to dosage.👋
What now?! Let's just grab a coffee, man.🙂))
(By the way—if that's the case, why is coffee considered healthy? Personally, I think it might be better to skip it entirely, yet you seem to imply there are benefits to it... so, what's your take?
Melissa Cruz2 said:Yeah, she really is the poster child for healthy living.😁
She might not actually be a model of healthy living—quite the opposite, in fact—because the reason she’s struggled with her weight all this time is precisely because she knows so much about nutrition. Plus, she employs private trainers, nutritionists, and so on... she isn't producing this show entirely on her own... etc., etc...
So, basically... and more importantly: she wasn't the one dispensing the advice, but rather... some doctor...
So🙂, okay?😁
Oprah drives me absolutely crazy, yet I find her shows to be quite excellent...
And don't even get me started on how much Sarah Miller irritates me. Honestly, I can't even watch her. What an uneducated woman.😁
Jesse Ortiz4 said:So, you drink your coffee without sugar—meaning, without any sweeteners?
Even artificial sweeteners aren't really any good, in my opinion.🙂
Salt is considered the number one culprit, followed by sugar as number two.
Why do you even bother drinking coffee at all?
Well, I use brown sugar—as for sweeteners, I have a genuine phobia because, in my mind, it's hardwired: sodium equals a heart attack.
Perhaps it isn't strictly true, but I am telling you—it’s a phobia.😳
And yes, I drink coffee because I love it; there are times when I wouldn't dream of eating all day if it meant I couldn't have my coffee...🙂
I don't want to admit to myself that it isn't healthy... otherwise, if I were to honestly admit to myself that it is unhealthy, I would have to stop... yet, here I am, obsessed with healthy eating.
dustycanyon6 said:Take a look at this article regarding the matter. When you consider the impact on insulin alone, sugar and similar substances are arguably far more hazardous than caffeine...
I will certainly give it a read. 🙂
While it may be true that sugars pose a greater risk—no doubt about it—I find myself in a different situation; I can go six months without chocolate or sweets quite easily, yet I simply cannot manage even half a day without my coffee...😁
A close friend of mine had her period arrive about ten days late—though, given how irregular things usually are for her, she wasn't "excessively" worried at first.
She finally took a test today, and unfortunately, it came back positive. (She even went out and bought one of those expensive ones and used her first morning sample.)
She’s only 18; she has her high school graduation tomorrow, and college entrance exams are just three weeks away... it's overwhelming. She’s supposed to be focusing entirely on studying right now.
As for the guy—he's being an absolute idiot, honestly, acting like this isn't even a major concern...
Can anyone tell me what a miscarriage actually looks like around the six-week mark? She is incredibly anxious about whether she'll experience heavy bleeding or intense pain—apparently, she heard a story about another girl who went through something similar... 😢 If anyone could please DM me a recommendation for a reliable gynecologist or any information regarding this...
Jesse Ortiz4 said:The whole idea is that green tea boosts your metabolism. With coffee, you have caffeine—with tea, it’s theanine.
Generally speaking, they have similar effects, though coffee tends to kick in faster but wears off more quickly. Green tea works the opposite way.
And you absolutely have to drink green tea without any sugar.
Honestly, just get out on the squash court and you'll lose weight for sure—unless you drop dead first.😛
But the point isn't necessarily how to lose weight; rather, if I could be five pounds—or even two pounds—lighter without drinking coffee, then I would have a truly compelling reason to quit... although, truth be told, I am searching for some convincing reason regardless.🙂
I mean, who knows if it's true that "caffeine stimulates insulin production, which ties up sugar so it gets absorbed more"—at least, that's what someone mentioned.
I realize this topic might have been touched upon before, but frankly, I don't mind if it has.🙂
The thing is, I was watching Oprah the other day—she had this nutritionist or specialist on—and he made a very specific claim:
"Stop drinking coffee for six weeks; instead, switch to green tea, and I guarantee you'll lose five pounds..." He explained it by suggesting that coffee spikes insulin production, which essentially makes it easier for sugars to bind—and thus, we store fat more readily.😁 It’s just... well, it makes you worry about weight gain.
Yet, not long ago, I read an article in a major newspaper claiming the exact opposite: that coffee actually boosts your metabolism by 5-10%, making it a perfect tool for a diet.
To be honest, I don't even want to dwell on whether coffee is "harmful" to one's health—mostly because I am a total coffee junkie... and quite frankly, those conflicting headlines drive me insane. One day it's "Coffee is killing you," and the next it's "People who drink more than three cups a day have a lower risk of..." It's exhausting. Why should I give up my habit when even the experts can't seem to agree on whether it's truly detrimental? I've tried to cut back here and there, but I simply cannot.
😢
So, does anyone actually know the truth regarding this?🙂
Please, do not lecture me with "coffee is bad for you" or similar platitudes. I am NOT asking for that; my question is specifically about the metabolic impact—does it actually contribute to weight gain or not?

I am aware of that—but I also know that humans were designed to walk rather than spend their lives riding the subway, yet I will still take the occasional ride when needed.😁
However, I have no intention of living recklessly like some stereotype; I intend to live like a true American. If I ever face a diagnosis like cancer, at least I will know it was fate playing its hand rather than my own poor choices.😁 😁
(Please, I ask that we refrain from any religious commentary🙄).🙂
That 24-inch waist measurement is practically a guarantee—mostly because Angelenos tend to be quite a bit shorter than, say, Floridians... though I suspect that doesn't apply to everyone else elsewhere.
And while we're at it, let's shatter one more stereotype:
MIAMI RESIDENTS AREN'T THE MOST BEAUTIFUL; IN FACT, OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING, THEY ARE LESS ATTRACTIVE THAN ANGELENOS. THEY ARE SIMPLY THINNER AND MORE NUMEROUS—AND SIGNIFICANTLY MORE NUMEROUS AT THAT. YOU COULD EVEN SAY THERE IS A LOT MORE GROOMING GOING ON DOWN THERE.
BUT, AS FOR BEING BETTER LOOKING IN THE FACE? NOT BY A LONG SHOT.
Though, if you ask me, I have a feeling the girls from D.C. aren't necessarily the thinnest either...
