Night of the Living Dead (1990) Remake in Movies ·
I guess I’ll follow suit and mimic Jason Chavez32’s little habit by dropping my blog review right here........... So, did you guys catch it, and what did you think of the movie??

This is a remake of Romero's namesake original from 1968, helmed by special effects legend Tom Savini, who worked alongside Romero on films like Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, as well as other horror staples like Friday the 13th and Predator. This version is essentially the same as Romero's original, just with better effects and, unlike the original, it’s actually in color 🙂 The opening is honestly pretty ridiculous, if not outright pointless. A brother and sister drive into town to visit their mother's grave, only to be ambushed at the cemetery by a zombie that kills the brother... the irony is that just a minute before the attack, the brother was trying to scare his sister by mimicking a zombie, haha. The sister survives the encounter and finds refuge in a nearby house. She ends up joining Ben, played by Tony Todd—the same actor who played Candyman a few years later. They soon realize a few other survivors are hiding in the basement, including the sleazy Harry Cooper, whom our hero Ben immediately shuts down with lines like, “I've only been around you a minute or two, but that's enough time for me to decide that I don't like you very much." The friction between them lasts until the end of the film, and it's actually quite well-executed; they have great chemistry, which leads to some solid one-liners, like when Cooper refuses to open the basement door and Ben tells him, “Cooper, I've got a shotgun out here. Open this door, you motherfucker.” The rest of the group includes a young guy named Tom, his girlfriend, Cooper's family, and a wife and her sick daughter who’s been bitten and is lying in the basement... well, we all know what happens to anyone the zombies get to, hehe. Honestly, I have no idea how they even managed to bite her considering these things move slower than a turtle—they are seriously slow, so when you watch this new Dawn of the Dead and then compare it to this, you really have to wonder... why are they so sluggish? Their pace is practically glacial; at one point, the camera shows the zombies approaching the house while the people inside are barricading the doors and windows, then five minutes later, the camera cuts back outside and they've only managed to crawl about ten feet. There are moments where Ben fights zombies in the yard, basically trying to escape, and I walked away feeling like they aren't even dangerous unless they're in a massive swarm, but the real issue with this movie is that they never quite reach that level of overwhelming numbers...
Tom Savini is renowned, or rather, he was, as one of the absolute masters of special effects. The masks in this film are truly impressive, though it feels somewhat inferior to the original in that specific regard, but there isn't nearly enough blood; there are scenes where Ben swings an axe at a zombie but we see zero blood, nothing... hmm, maybe the zombies already bled out somewhere else. There is irony baked into every corner, especially toward the end... but I suppose that's to be expected since Romero wrote and adapted the script.
The acting is the highlight of the movie; Tony Todd, aka Candyman, is legendary, and the actor playing Cooper is just as good... the lead, Barbara, feels more like a Resident Evil heroine in this version, handling a shotgun better than Cooper and fighting the zombies without the fear shown by Barbara in the original, but overall everyone is solid. The direction is decent, the script is alright, the gore rating is a bit weak, and there are some naive, predictable moments; you can tell Romero isn't a director, but all things considered, the film is good.

Brian Foster2 said:So, they aired Night of the Living Dead on ABC last night at 11:40 PM. I wonder what’s next, maybe they'll roll out Dawn or Dead...

It wasn't a bad film... I might end up putting together a review for the blog sometime...🙂

analogcobra31 said:Actually, some of the most extreme horror films were inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, including blockbusters like the solid 1988 version of The Blob, the cult classic Beyond 86, or genuine gorefests like City of the Living Dead, which was actually banned across much of Europe for over twenty years...

Stuart Gordon directed plenty of decent films based on Lovecraftian stories, though he’s probably best known for Re-animator...🙂

Freddy vs. Jason is just a joke...

all that's missing now is
Freddy vs. Predator
Jason vs. Alien
Freddy vs. Alien
Jason vs. Predator
Freddy and Jason vs. Predator and Alien
and so on, and so forth...

Alien vs. Ash 😎

Sean Nguyen4 said:I have a question regarding the first movie. At the start, Michael Corleone seems totally detached from the mafia business—he basically says, "That's my family, not me"—but then he undergoes this sudden, drastic shift and gets pulled right into the family "business."

It’s an easy enough explanation, really... it’s just in his blood...

Dennis Long7 said:I don't think 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' is a bad series either, though I haven't sat through the whole thing... just the first one and maybe the third. I guess I only dig it because it hits that teen horror vibe, but honestly, the original 'Halloween' and maybe the second one still outclass the entire 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise...👎

I wanted to mention that if Universal Pictures actually signs a deal with Snyder for a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, and they want to make it better than the original, it won't just be some remake of Romero's Day of the Dead; instead, it would carry the title Dawn of the Dead 2 and function as its own standalone story...

Honestly, thank God we might see Zack Snyder turning a new page with zombie flicks, which means Dawn could potentially evolve into a full trilogy...

Snyder isn't a true horror director; he tends to take horror premises and turn them into action movies... if he keeps heading down that path with these sequels, things aren't going to look good...🙂

Brian Foster2 said:I was actually hesitant to praise the Dawn of the Dead remake because I figured you guys would tear me apart, but honestly, the remake was strong enough that I felt compelled to go out and grab the original DVD...

The remake holds its own, though it doesn't quite hit those pure horror notes; Zack Snyder clearly leaned more into the action side of things, but considering it was his debut, you have to give him credit where it's due...
Madonna would only be an actress in my adult movies...

I’m not saying it’s a bad film, I actually think it’s great, but calling it horror feels wrong...
It doesn't have that vibe you get from Bad Taste or Braindead.
Those three are solid picks if you just want a laugh, or if you're trying to ease someone into the genre who's usually terrified of horror films...😁

Wait, did you even see the original The Shining?

Ethan Perez97 said:By the way, why hasn't anyone brought up Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal Ferox lately?
They're decent enough movies...

Because horror isn't solely defined by how much blood you can pour on screen...

Personally, I actually dug the second one, even if the whole movie is pretty mindless... 🙂

Dead Carrot said:Beyond that, I have to admit that once you move past Burton's vision of Batman, everything else just feels like cheap imitations and filler... 😉

How many of them are there even...? And all you really get to deal with is one guy, Joel Schumacher.

The expectation is that the new Batman from Nolan's camp will actually manage to outdo what Burton did...

I'm with you there, he's a solid director... though maybe he should stay away from the superhero genre entirely...

Jose Chase2 said:Spider-Man was total garbage for me, mostly because of Raimi, because if it were some hack director at the helm, it might have been a surprise, but instead, it just stands out as his worst effort...👎

Personally, I couldn't stand Darkman either...

Look, the man needs to pay his bills... and honestly, if you actually watch those Spider-Man movies, they aren't all that terrible, especially since most other directors would have completely botched them. Just look at how Schumacher handled Batman...
