John Doe said:Well, I knew someone would come for me regarding Bauhaus... 🙂

Hard to explain... the sound feels kind of plastic... and honestly, the hype just feels hollow...

Top 3 terrible 'goth' bands:

1. The Cure
2. Bauhaus
3. Sisters of whatever-the-hell-they-are

The hype, as someone already mentioned, isn't really that big of a deal in their case—or at least, it shouldn't be. I think what they offer goes way beyond all that dark aesthetic nonsense. So, if we look at Bell and Hollow Hills, then that hype (if you can call it that) works—I say it works, though not necessarily for everyone, but those tracks definitely have their charm, even if they aren't my absolute favorites, especially when looking back at certain years.
But like I said, they’re more than just a vibe. They're theatrical in just the right amount (unlike Sisters of Mercy, whom I wouldn't put in the same category as Bauhaus in a heartbeat—I'd probably bring up Love and Rockets instead if Sistersnstonesto comes to mind) and they're actually quite playful. That really shows during their danceable moments, which I love. Let's move past the dark clichés; they deserve better than that.

I saw them live recently, so I'm still processing it, I guess. But to sound tight, fresh, and incredibly good after all these years? They do. I had my own phases where they sat gathering dust on The Shelf, but regardless, I maintain ( 😬 ) that they aren't just another one of those... those... bad eighties bands. No. They aren't.

My list of favorite (five, in this case) Bauhaus songs:

- terror couple kill colonel
- crowds
- kick in the eye
- 2. Who killed mr moonlight 3. King volcano 4. Rosegarden Funeral of sores 5. Slice of Life
- hm. mask, I guess (though I might change my mind tomorrow).
The Rolling Stones in Music ·
I dig them, they're cool.

But they didn't click instantly. I first caught them live last year opening for Modest Mouse, and I thought, "Huh... these guys are actually good." Then I kind of moved on. Caught them live again this spring—also as an opener—and things finally started to settle. Now, I really love listening to them.
My favorites are 'Bon Iver', 'I'll believe in anything', and 'Song Lyric'... though that first one is probably the best.
The Three Little Pigs in Music ·
The guy in 'Bugs Bunny and the Stream' is just pathetic, clearly just scraping by through life... but if it's the same bunny we see here...

In the woods, Bugs sits and sleeps, he sits and sleeps
Poor little guy, what's the point when you can't even jump
Bugs Bunny, hop, hop, hop

Watch out for the hunting dogs, watch out
They'll hunt you down and carry you home to their master
Bugs Bunny, hop, hop... Bugs... hop....

...so I figure spring hit him pretty hard.

All I know are those two snippets. Is there more? Or is that it? 😁

And all of this set to such a mockingly cheerful tune.

Probably not the same bunny. And if it is, I don't know... maybe he's too frozen to move. Or maybe he just decided this was easier.
Song of the Week in Music ·
My Album of the Week is "Funeral" by Arcade Fire.
Honestly, I’ve been playing it on loop for the last two days and it’s hitting just right. It moves through that heavy melancholy at the start before settling into those lush, sweet melodies toward the end—especially "Haiti i Rebellion ( Lies".

Anyway, people are going to be dissecting this record for a long time... if they aren't already.
I would’ve had some more specific critiques if I'd caught them live last week... or whenever it was. (Aljosa, were you there? I think they played near you too...). Guess I'll just wait for another chance to see if they’re actually that eccentric and interesting in person.

Oh, right, here's a little something 😁 — they're from New York City ( or click here if you want to dive deeper )

Lyrics?
[Neighbordhood #1 (Tunnels)]

And if my parents are crying then I'll dig a tunnel from my window to yours, yeah a tunnel from my window to yours
You climb out the chimney and meet me in the middle, the middle of the town. And SINCE there's no one else around, we let our hair grow long, and forget all we used to know -- then our skin gets thicker from living out in the snow.

Song of the week (believe it or not, from the same album): Rebellion ( Lies). Or maybe... Haiti or una Annee Sans Lumiere..

amberfalcon172 said:look, May...........

I am.
Oh, yeah... I am.

A sweet kind of horror. 😁
Watching it actually made me think of the movie Amelia (specifically that forced, quirky/weird character archetype)...
Or maybe something like: '...come on, you poseurs, let's see what being truly weird actually looks like. Try being weirder than May.'
(I mean, okay... it's not just that with her, but I won't overanalyze it right now—not necessary)

All in all, it’s a playful horror; I think it does a good job bouncing between dark humor and discomfort (which, I assume, shouldn't be overdone if they want the impact to land). That said—I wouldn't say the scenes horrified me, but there's something about the film that grabs you.

I don't know... maybe that little DIY fridge of hers. 😁

Anyway, watching it wasn't boring.

(Yeah, yeah... I know this isn't the right thread for a film review, but since it was mentioned, I can't be bothered to go find that 'what did you watch last' thread or whatever...)

amberfalcon172—did a little digging, but there's not much on the soundtrack. (Haven't seen my Little Eye yet)

darkbison81,

Look, 🙂, I wasn't grouping bacon and "some other specific cut of meat" together. (I could have just put "or some other meat" in parentheses instead...). Those were just examples of... you know, an animal.
I meant "one or the other"—depending on the meal—for people who can't go without larger portions of meat. I mentioned a "specific cut" because when you look at a burger, it’s... well, it's way too much. 😁 (like ten patties plus all those other extras). I didn't want anyone thinking bacon was my idea of a healthy staple just because they aren't eating burgers. That's why I added the clarification in brackets.
Basically, the bacon was just an example of something that isn't exactly "healthy," though it seems like a better choice if someone is consuming a lot of meat. And honestly, seeing the body types over in the States confirms it—certain diets (like McDonald's) really change how people look. It's not just your typical weight gain...

I see how my point could be taken two different ways (and yeah... I could have worded it better), but that's what I actually meant.

amberfalcon172 said:Look, May, just wait until you hit that scene in the daycare where the blind kids start crawling all over the floor. Okay, maybe "creepy" isn't the word, but it's definitely intense.

Glad you reminded me; I’ve been avoiding that movie for ages (not sure why), so it slipped my mind. I’ll have to watch it soon—sounds... interesting. And terrifying, apparently... creepy, even.

By the way... since we're on the subject of eyes... has anyone seen "my Little Eye" ? I haven't gotten around to it yet. Something tells me I should probably just leave it on the shelf. Then again... you never know... maybe there's something worth seeing in there.

Most of the time, I don't need horror movies filled with dismembered limbs and endless gore. That stuff is supposed to be scary, but more often than not, it’s just funny or boring... if it works at all. This movie was actually pretty decent for me.
Honestly, I love a horror film that can actually relax you and entertain you through the storytelling. I just want one or two scenes that genuinely make me jump in my seat. A subtle hint or a weird little detail is enough to give me that sense of dread or a specific kind of unease. I'm all about that eerie, atmospheric vibe.

Oh, right... the remake... I think I read something about this a few months back, but I can't recall if I got it right: does Tom Cruise have anything to do with this?

darkbison81 said:To just proves there are plenty of people in America who don't know how to eat properly and would end up in trouble anyway. Instead of hitting McDonald's a few times a week, they'll just eat some other kind of food that has just as much fat, carbs, and calories...

Fair point; obviously most things we eat can have similar effects (and do). I'm not saying stuffing yourself with other types of food loaded with fat and calories is healthy or a good idea—especially if you're skipping fruit and veggies entirely. And sure, as if all the bad stuff is somehow concentrated into a single McDonald's meal 😁 ).
He didn't prove anything we aren't already aware of. But it’s also about how, after a while, people just start feeling defeated. They think, "It's all the same, so I might as well just grab McDonald's and stop wasting time looking for something that might be slightly healthier." That's part of the issue...
There's also a difference between burgers—and those fries, too. It's not the same whether you make them at home or eat something similar to what McDonald's offers. And honestly... that comparison between McDonald's fries and some other non-homemade option was an interesting experiment.
I think it's better to eat, say, some bacon (or a decent cut of meat, for those who eat it often) and bread, rather than eating a processed mixture made from god-knows-how-many different cows plus all the preservatives and additives found in that junk. It isn't just about the fats...

That's why I said at the end of my post that it's better (and possible) to choose the lesser of two evils. You don't need to be obsessed—sure, you'll grab fast food once in a while—but you shouldn't feel miserable thinking "bad food" doesn't exist.
Also, I think it's easy to go overboard, both when it comes to shoving burgers down your throat and when it comes to some sort of "holy abstinence" from anything remotely unhealthy.
You just need to find a middle ground and listen to your body...

Druuna said:Correction on a factual error:

He didn't just eat hamburgers. The rules were this:
1. He had to eat and drink exclusively at McDonald's for all three meals.
2. Every single item on their menu had to be eaten an equal number of times.
3. He had to stay as active as the average American (some specific step count, can't recall the exact number).

By day 15, doctors were basically begging him to stop because his liver was failing. Not to mention his mental state... 🙄
Disaster.

😳

Exactly.

Morgan Spurlock proved, contrary to what Pichot claims, that the whole 'junk food issue' is very real.
It's obvious to Spurlock that almost nobody—or maybe just a tiny minority—eats those burgers (or anything else they sell) every single day. However, there are plenty of people eating it a few times a week (and I doubt a certain percentage eats it daily); especially in the US and Canada. They could have warned people about what that diet does to the body—since nobody pays attention until a major health crisis hits (and even then, they try to cut back on that garbage). I'm mostly talking about people who don't care how much junk they consume, rather than those trying to eat relatively healthy when possible.

Anyway, the documentary speaks for itself and definitely makes a point.

The DVD has some interesting extras—including a little experiment where he compared McDonald's french fries and burgers to similar items from a local greasy spoon 😉 that offers something slightly better quality (more like a decent homemade burger and fries that aren't quite as processed as McDonald's). Interesting... 😁

Avoiding unhealthy food is hard, sure, but you can always choose the lesser of two evils. At least when there's a choice. And usually, there is.

Gaudrath said:Back to the point. Horror is supposed to give you chills, not impress you with deep philosophical themes. Maybe you're mad at Rambo because he didn't write a thesis on astrophysics, or upset with Superman because he ignores the laws of physics...

As far as its purpose goes, it’s about ghosts, atmosphere, sound design, and all that. Gothika actually manages to pull off being a horror thriller. It isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes level, but for a ghost story, it's decent enough.

It helps if there's some sort of logic involved—or at least a sense of meaning beyond just mindless popcorn flick territory. This one felt pretty pointless to me, even if the opening was okay. I hate feeling bored when watching horror, regardless of the subgenre.
The movie just... started dragging after the first thirty minutes.
For example, I actually felt that genuine sense of unease (plus some weird chills toward the end) while watching "The Audition" by Takashi Miike. That kind of creepy, unsettling vibe can be found in much better films. Or at least... more solid ones. 😉

Personally, if the whole movie stayed the same but those slimy scenes were swapped out for something a bit more "tasteful," it would be much better.

Personally 🙂: then it wouldn't be 'Crash.'

I watched, say, "Crash" a few years back, and the images still stick with me—my mind just seems to feast on certain scenes (perversely?), even if they aren't the weirdest or heaviest parts of the movie.
Just a bunch of details that haunt me sometimes... in a good way, obviously, since I think the movie is great and impactful.

eXistenZ is alright, could probably watch it again.

Robert Cooper41 said:Whatever. As a huge fan of My Bloody Valentine, I can forgive her choice of soundtrack artists... once those first few notes of Just Like Honey by Jesus and Mary Chain kicked in near the end of the film, all the flaws just melted away... 😁

Exactly.

Look, the movie was good—not enough to make me obsessed (honestly, I preferred Scarlett Johansson in Ghost World), but definitely one of the better ones lately. Now... whether that’s because of the soundtrack or just the feeling that the more you lose touch with them as characters, the more you actually feel what they're feeling... it doesn't really matter. Once everything clicks, you end up with a very watchable film...

Boredom. It deals with trivial or semi-trivial life situations, and that sense of being "lost" is really there because the dialogue is occasionally nonsensical. In the kind of situation they find themselves in, the conversations don't necessarily have to be interesting; no matter how hard they try, nothing really inspires them... except maybe themselves (though... that’s a conversation for another time...)🙂 ).

The movie was fine...

All good, all good...

I guess I have a soft spot for 'Painful' (though it’s not exactly at the top of my all-time favorites list), followed closely by 'and Then nothing turned...' — such a killer track right from the jump. And I always find myself humming along to 'our way to fall.'

I also enjoy spinning 'i can hear the heart beating as one' ... (that specific bebop vibe hits hard every once in a while 🙂 ).
Spider-Man in Movies ·
Lame, boring, almost unwatchable.

Ben Affleck wanders through the movie with his chest puffed out, trying to convince us (yeah, right...) that he's the big star and just a total catch (subjective, I guess...); I used to be indifferent toward him, but after this, he’s just irritating.

I don't know... feels like Benov's constant posturing ate up what could have been a genuinely cool, dark story (not to mention a few other 'details' that really needed fixing 😁 ).
