PC keeps freezing up in IT Support ·
It’s looking pretty likely that you’re running into the same issue again. Either that, or your motherboard is just starting to give up the ghost bit by bit... Which board are we talking about here? And what about the rest of your setup in general?
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
I've always leaned more toward Nvidia than AMD, but this time I’d actually pick the RX 570 over the 3 GB version of the GTX 1060—mostly just because of the VRAM capacity. I mean, let's be real, with how modern games are being released lately, 3 GB of VRAM is just way too little... So, what's your take? 😁
AOC 144Hz Gaming Monitor Review/Discussion in IT Support ·

I’d say it should work—it’s got dual link DVI support, after all. Maybe try digging through the monitor's actual OSD menu? If there's an option tucked away in there somewhere, you might be able to toggle it manually...
Which laptop should I get? in IT Support ·
You really ought to build your PC from scratch rather than buying one of those pre-built machines... I won't go into all the specifics right now—honestly, there have been a thousand threads on this forum already explaining why custom builds beat those "all-in-one" boxes—but you definitely want to pick out your own components. You should have probably posted this under the Desktop Builds section instead of IT Help, but no worries; the mods will likely move it over, and then some guys around here can help you put together a solid parts list.
External hard drive formatting? in IT Support ·
Alternatively, you could just boot from a different Windows installer and wipe every single partition you see until the drive shows up as nothing but unallocated space. Once you've done that, just kill the installation process midway through—and boom, you're left with a completely blank hard drive...

I honestly thought he was talking about something happening within Windows itself—not making a comment about the forums here 😁😁

So, do you have more than one user account set up on Windows 7? If you do, you probably aren't logged in as the Administrator—in which case, you’ll likely need to switch over to the main admin account just to get the permissions you're looking for.

Fair enough 😁

Actually, I think it makes sense—since the guy is running a 4K Dell UltraSharp, the GPU is going to have plenty to chew on with all those pixels, which gives the processor some breathing room. It would be a totally different story if he were sticking to 1080p or 1440p; the GPU wouldn't even break a sweat because it isn't built for such low resolutions, while the CPU would struggle to keep up, creating a massive bottleneck.

I'm not quite following what you mean regarding the Z270 part? 😁

Try right-clicking the taskbar and heading over to Performance under the Task Manager—that should show you exactly what’s eating up your resources in the background. Honestly, if your Windows isn't fully up to date, I'd bet my money it's just a Windows update running its course. But hey, check for yourself... If you aren't quite sure how to pull up the Task Manager, just right-click that Start icon in the bottom left corner and you'll see the option right there.
Maybe try updating to the latest BIOS—you might find a "boot from USB" option waiting for you in the BIOS UI once that's done.

As far as those laptop specs go, they aren't exactly a total disaster—it should be perfectly fine for browsing the web or catching up on some news—but it’ll struggle with YouTube. You might have better luck if you cap the quality at 240p, 360p, or maybe 480p just to keep things from stuttering too much... Also, if you haven't wiped the drive and done a fresh install in a long while, honestly, a clean reinstall would probably do wonders and make the whole thing feel brand new again. Just stick to the bare essentials when you're setting it back up, and you should be good to go.

Maybe take a quick peek at your speaker settings—you know, down by the clock in the taskbar—just to make sure the output is actually set to your speakers. On my rig, it’s set to Realtek High Definition Audio..

It’ll honestly take you about ten seconds—everything you need is laid out right under option one.
AMD RX 570 driver issues in IT Support ·
YEP, it’s actually pretty funny—I was just looking into this myself and, yeah, there’s nothing there. They've got drivers for Windows 10 and 7, but that's it. Honestly, if you ask me, Windows 8.1 is probably one of the worst versions they've ever put out, right after Vista... so I'd definitely suggest just grabbing Windows 10 instead. It's a much better experience.
CPU overheating issues in Hardware ·
You might want to double-check how you seated the CPU cooler... especially since the rig is totally dust-free and you used a fresh layer of thermal paste.
Potential upgrade options? in Desktops ·
I haven't caught up on every single post from start to finish—just scanning through quickly—but did I see correctly that you're running two gtx 970 cards in SLI? If that's the case, I wouldn't jump straight to a gtx 1070 unless you already have a buyer lined up to pay about $1600-$567 for a single gtx 970. I actually sold mine a month ago and managed to get $533 if my memory serves me right, which let me move up to a 1070. The performance jump is huge, obviously, but since I'm still on a 1080p monitor, my Core i5-4670k processor ends up being the bottleneck 😁 in certain games. Once I save up enough cash, I'm planning to upgrade to a higher resolution monitor—that way the graphics card can really focus on the resolution, since 1080p is honestly just a cakewalk for it... and it'll give my i5 some room to breathe. So, I'll say it again: if I understood you right about having those two gtx 970 cards in SLI, just hang onto them for a while longer... UNLESS you happen to have a buyer ready to drop $3000-$1067 for the pair.
Maybe give a Linux Mint live USB a shot—just download it, boot from it, and see if you can access the USB drive to rescue your files...

I'd grab the Cinnamon version

That’s strange—it sounds like you have it set to large icons, but I just checked my own settings and everything looks perfectly normal on my end too... Which version of Windows are you running? You should be able to head over to the folder where your images are located, go into the options, and uncheck the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" box. If you happen to be on Windows 10, just open up something like "This PC," click on "Options" under the "File" menu in the top left corner, and you'll find that setting right there.
Which RAM should I buy? in Desktops ·
Honestly, you’re better off saving up for some higher-end components instead... Adding more RAM will definitely help stop your computer from feeling so sluggish, but don't expect it to be a magic fix for gaming performance—it's more about making everything in Windows feel a bit "smoother" during everyday tasks, you know?

shadowraven21 said:Well, everything just went completely south on me. I'm looking for someone who has a legitimate copy of Office 2010 they could install at my office. If you can help out, I’d really appreciate a good deal—this is my very first paycheck, and honestly, it's already vanished into thin air.

You can actually install "legit Office" yourself; the main thing is having a valid product key that works properly. Since this is for a business, you really ought to buy it from a retailer like Best Buy so you have an actual receipt to show if there's ever an audit. I mean, if you were just using it at home, you could probably just get by with an activator and call it a day... but for work? Not worth the risk. Honestly, I've been checking around different stores online and I can't seem to find Office 2010 anywhere—all I see is Microsoft 365 or some other newer versions of Office.
