It’s never actually been formatted... honestly, it hasn't even been used in ages, oh man. I finally figured out how to pull a boot from a USB drive... I just need some blank CDs or a DVD so I can burn a bootable ISO onto it. Then I'll boot from that. The drive won't take anything else except an MP3 player and a few other little things...
By the way, I was upgrading it to 2GB of RAM... ordered some 1GB DVI cards off Amazon, they were super cheap.
I’ve got this old laptop lying around. It’s working, but man, it is painfully slow—basically useless right now. Still, I can't bring myself to just toss it in the trash, so I figured there might be a way to breathe some life into it.
It’s running an original Windows XP Home Edition, and honestly, it's in such bad shape that you can't even use it for anything meaningful.
Specs-wise, it’s an HP with an AMD Turion 64 processor clocked at 1.8GHz. 512MB RAM 80GB HDD It has WiFi and two USB ports.
If it makes sense, I’m thinking about tearing it down, cleaning out all the dust and junk, and giving the software a total refresh.
The battery is pretty much dead, but hey, it still works if I keep it plugged in.😁
Here’s my dilemma: I really don't want to reinstall Windows XP because I’m just over it. It’s definitely too weak to handle Windows 7.
That leaves me looking at a lightweight version of Linux.
I’m looking for recommendations. I did come across Bodhi Linux, but if anyone has a better idea, please let me know!
I won't be doing anything heavy on it—just browsing the web, watching YouTube, and stuff like that.
Larry Ortiz5 said:Maybe try popping into Disk Management first—just to see if the system actually recognizes the drive at all. Basically, you want to check if the hardware shows up on that list...
Does anyone know if they offer any kind of discount when you go to insure a second car, especially if you already have one policy active with them? With a 50% bonus
When I tried launching BitTorrent, everything just turned red and threw an error 🤔. I checked This PC and realized one of my hard drives—my main storage drive—is completely missing from the list. Luckily, Windows 10 is running fine on my other drive . I actually opened up the case to check, and wouldn't you know it, the drive is right there. Everything looks plugged in perfectly, but even after a full reset, it’s like it doesn't even exist . Does this mean it's officially dead, or is there some way to save it? I've got a ton of important documents sitting on there that I really need . It's an Apple drive, 500GB, and it's a few years old now .
Look, I know my way around a Windows installation—I've done this plenty of times before. The only hiccup is that I don't have a physical disc lying around, so I'll need to grab an ISO from a torrent site. Honestly, though, I don't mind doing that at all. On top of that, I actually have a 32-bit version of Windows 7 sitting on another drive, so while I'm sorting this one out, I could always just boot into that instead.
Well, if that's the case, I might try to work around it by moving my essential files over to my other hard drive so I don't have to download everything all over again. Does anyone know if there's a way to just reinstall what's already there?
I’m having some real issues with my PC lately. It feels like random junk just installs itself every single day. Yesterday it was some random thing I can't even remember, and today it was some YouTube Downloader along with a few other pieces of crap. I managed to get rid of an AVG PIN or maybe Tune, though getting that out was a massive headache too.
It’s been running super slow the last few days. Maybe it’s my fault because I uninstalled Avira—which actually did its job perfectly fine—and installed Comodo instead, which then dragged in GeekBuddy and Chromodo (a browser) with it. The antivirus itself won't even start sometimes when I boot up Windows. Its repair tool says everything is totally fine, but if it doesn't launch, I have to start it manually.
There's this little gadget sitting on the side of my screen that always says "SECURE,"🤔 but I still keep getting all sorts of garbage popping up on my desktop.
A few more things: when I try to go through the Uninstallation process for these unwanted programs using CCleaner, absolutely nothing happens. Same thing when I try using the Control Panel. Also, ESET Smart Security keeps popping up; I uninstalled it at least two years ago, but that icon just appears for a second and then vanishes.
I can't figure out how to stop Skype from launching automatically whenever I boot Windows. I always have to manually close it. Are you guys sure you want... YES, I know, it's annoying, but I do need Skype once in a while.
Reinstalling Windows isn't really an option for me since I have tons of important docs, photos, porn, music, and movies stored on here... plus, I don't even have an installation CD. On the flip side, I have two hard drives. One has another set of Windows on it (a clean install), but it's a weaker setup—just Windows 7 on both.
I mostly use this computer for browsing, AutoCAD, and playing games occasionally.
It's pretty sluggish, even though it's running an Intel Pentium Dual-Core 3.2 GHz.
What are your tips or recommendations? For antivirus, cleaning software, or just fixing this mess? If it's not too much trouble, could you put together a list of programs I should actually be using, especially for security?
So, I’ve got an FSP Group power supply in there. Everything's hooked up and running smoothly... I just haven't connected those front panel USB ports or the headphone jack yet since I don't have the manuals for either the motherboard or the case.
Does that mean I should pull off the whole heatsink? And that metal piece too? I tried, but it wouldn't budge, and I really didn't want to force it and rip anything out. I mostly just play Euro Truck Simulator 2, so would it actually work without a fan? It wouldn't be a huge deal to swap in a different one if it's absolutely necessary.
So, here's the deal... I've got two setups that aren't quite working right, so I’m thinking about doing some tinkering here and there. I'm considering swapping a 350W power supply into a build that used to have a 420W one before it died on me. The specs are
A Seagate 500GB HDD plus another 160GB drive—no clue what brand—but I need both since I'll have Windows on one and my data on the other. An Intel Core i5 Pentium Dual-Core running at 3.2GHz. An ATI Radeon HD4650 with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 4GB of RAM (DDR3 2 x2). Some random LG optical drive, which is pretty much a necessity. An AsRock G41 motherboard, though I can't remember the exact model. And that little 80mm fan.
Basically, can that 350W unit actually handle this? I don't really want to take the risk and end up frying everything, but buying new parts is totally out of the question for now. I'm just trying to cobble together this junk I already own, at least for the time being.
Also, one more thing: the fan on the graphics card is way too loud. Is it okay if I just rip it off and point an external fan directly at the card instead?
A buddy of mine has some much weaker gear, so I'm a little nervous about plugging this in. Here’s my current setup:
CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 dual core 3.2GHz GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4500 1GB 4GB RAM Two hard drives And 3 fans Plus, who knows what else is pulling power—webcam, external drive, and all sorts of random stuff plugged into the USB ports
So, here’s the deal. I’ve got this PC that’s about 4 years old now. It’s actually a pretty solid machine—fast, reliable, and hasn't given me any trouble until yesterday... Now, when I hit the power button, it stays on for maybe 3 seconds before just cutting out. Then, after a few seconds, it tries to boot up again, only to shut down yet again. It seems to have calmed down for the moment and is running fine, at least for right now... But man, what could be causing that?
I’m thinking about getting some kind of tattoo on my arm (just below the shoulder). I want something cool, but I don't actually want it to be permanent. It would be awesome if there was something that lasts maybe a year or so... does that type of thing even exist anywhere?? Or just those temporary summer ones that last a few months? Also, any idea what the ballpark cost would be?
So, I've been on the meds and hitting the gym for two days now, but honestly, I’m seeing zero progress 🤷 or is it just one of those things where everything slowly starts falling into place eventually??
They diagnosed me with facial paralysis. I had a slightly more thorough exam and they asked a few questions -Can you close your eye?... couldn't do it -Can you hear out of your right ear?... yeah, I can -Can you feel touch on the right side of your face?... I can
Then they asked if my ear was hurting, and I told them, "not really"
They were talking about keeping me hospitalized for a few days to get some injections, but it turns out that wasn't actually necessary. I can just swing by the hospital 2 or 3 times a day if needed
After that, I went for an eye exam on my right eye. My vision hasn't gotten any worse, so they just prescribed some drops... here’s what I ended up with
-Optive eye drops (10ml), which I need to use about 10 times a day -Medrol 32mg tablets -Virolex 200mg tablets -And Controloc tablets for my stomach
The advice was to stay indoors for a week, avoid smoking during this time, and do some facial exercises
Thanks so much, you guys have been a huge help. If I don't feel better by tomorrow, I'm heading to the doctor. Should I try putting some kind of compress on it, or just leave it alone? Oh, I forgot to mention one thing... I can't even close my eye easily. Basically, the whole right side is totally blocked.
@velvetgull9...do you happen to know how long that usually lasts?
