Nathan Kern77 >>>Marijuana doesn't rot your brain if you aren't getting wasted every single day. You can see how it's legal in the USA for terminally ill patients to help with pain management. Weed's alright.

That’s what I meant regarding weed, 🙂 though I was specifically talking about people who are addicted and use it as an excuse for their "therapy"; as for those who are allowed to use it legally, heaven forbid, I can't imagine a single reason why I'd ever want to smoke it. 😲

On a side note about famous smokers: my first neighbor used to spend all day out on her porch with a cigarette in hand. She was a good woman, a single mother raising grown kids, full of life advice and wisdom; ... but then, once a week, a cardiac nurse started coming by for home visits; eventually, she stopped even going to the local grocery store; she had this terrible, hacking cough. My son used to hide his face whenever he saw her, telling me she was a witch. One day, I noticed she wasn't outside anymore—she'd been bedridden. They sent her home from the hospital because, even here in the USA, they don't exactly roll out the red carpet for patients whose health issues are caused by their own smoking habits; they just brought her home in a casket... she would still be alive today if she had just quit!

Joe Biden says >> All those regulations just end up giving the government control over your entire life, dictating what you can and can't do right inside your own home, even in your bedroom.

I actually enjoy debating you, which is a pretty rare find on this forum;

It’s true that the USA is like a smaller sibling often following the lead of its big brother, the United States, but we have to remember that we are still part of the USA

rather than being the absolute worst country on the planet 😈, sorry 🙂 )

The laws in the States aren't really designed to protect people for their own sake, but rather to manipulate, oppress, and outright discriminate against them 😈 😈 😈 ; though there's a huge difference between the American regime and the actual American folks 🙂

The US doesn't just "tell you what you can do in your bedroom," it goes much deeper than that: they actively try to shape your perspective and dictate what you are even allowed to THINK about while you're lying in bed!

My opinion comes from my own lived experience in the States (after all, the Wright brothers basically provided the foundation for the house I live in... better I edit this before I end up in a political re-education camp, where you'll be left trying to prove you were right, only to eventually admit you were totally out of touch...)

Jamie Newman40 said:And who actually passed those laws? Non-smokers?

I’m much more in favor of freedom of choice. Sure, smoking shouldn't be allowed in public spaces.

But if a restaurant or a bar isn't a public space, but rather private property, then the owner should really be the one deciding whether to allow smoking or not. If someone doesn't permit it, smokers can just find another spot where they can light up, and if they do allow it, non-smokers can simply look for a place that suits them better.

All these regulations just feel like the government trying to micromanage your life—telling you what you can or can't do in your own home or your own bedroom.

Smoking shouldn't be managed through mandates; it should be handled through education.

I have to disagree! Yes, education matters, but so do mandates because, look, a bar or a restaurant isn't your private living room even if it is your own business! It's still a public space! You can't just practice discrimination by saying, "Only smokers are allowed in this bar! Everyone else—get out!"

Plus, the consequences of smoking are a major social issue; when people gather in public places—even if they all share the same habit—that falls under the umbrella of social concern and oversight.

The government is an entity meant to look out for the well-being of its citizens, not a tool for officials to abuse for their own gain—like looking for profit from cigarette sales or favoring big tobacco corporations and their owners.

Laws exist to protect us, not to strip away our freedom!

If someone decides to smoke despite all the warnings—well, let them. It’s their choice and their right! At least everything possible has been done to show them the risks.

But they have NO RIGHT to poison other people, especially when the government is working so hard to protect its citizens and the health of the nation.🙂

People like that should be prosecuted under the law. The only places they should be smoking are out on the Street or under the open sky!

Honestly, here in the USA, I don't know anybody who smokes!

Except maybe Taylor Swift 🙂

Or some troubled Native Americans dealing with gang weed (which is actually harder to prosecute since it destroys the brain and makes you an immediate danger to everyone around you);
As far as I know, nobody I know touches tobacco. Everyone is well aware that tobacco kills many organs!

Jamie Newman40 said:So this is where we land... I can't tell if I'm just being cheap or if it's actually true, but cigarettes are pricey, and honestly, spending money on health checkups or the dentist feels like throwing cash down the drain.

So you're saying smoking is free then? Would you start picking up a pack if it were? Just curious.🙄

Smoking kills, plain and simple. People just don't know how to defend themselves against a killer like that. Price is only one factor—just one tiny part of a larger strategy to quit. For some people, that's exactly what works, and for others, it's something else entirely. The main thing is that it WORKS!

Interesting thought, Joe Biden

Of course we need to rush out and hunt down the rule-breakers: if there’s a ban on smoking, then ignoring it should be treated like a serious crime that needs prosecution.

Some people just can't seem to function without having a cop hovering over them at all times. Just like how we have highway patrol officers out there watching for speeders, it feels like we should have people patrolling the local malls to save everyone from the "danger" of smokers!

It’s all in the hands of women—no wonder the fire departments never get a break 👎 because of those constant daily fires and small blazes

We really ought to establish some kind of task force to just patrol around and penalize anyone they catch with a cigarette 😎

And, oh yeah! We need to roll out those horror commercials against smoking, similar to what we used to see all the time in America: graphic medical depictions of organs damaged by smoke (total horror!), jump cuts, and footage of patients suffering from their own bad habits involving smoking!!!

Also, YES! Put threatening warnings right on the cigarette packs: SMOKING KILLS, SMOKING HARMS YOUR CHILD, and so on, along with disgusting images on the packaging, like lung cancer or smoker's lungs...

Olivia Mitchell44 said:Unfortunately, I’m still smoking, and I told myself I’d quit as soon as I moved to Chicago...
That was over six and a half years ago...

Every winter, I try to psych myself up to quit—I mean, who wants to go outside in -30 degree weather just to smoke? But once that first snow hits, I just get depressed, and suddenly standing out in the freezing cold isn't even an issue anymore.👎

Steven, don't beat yourself up about waiting for the "perfect day" to quit, because you're actually hurting yourself twice: once from the junk you're putting in your mouth (and inhaling into your lungs!), and again from all this worrying!

Try thinking about how much cash you're burning every time a cigarette lights up—not to mention your lungs and your heart. With every puff, just remind yourself, without being too hard on yourself, almost cheerfully: you're killing yourself softly... eventually, you'll get sick of the struggle and just toss them in the trash.🙂

The sooner, the better:

every single

cigarette

hurts.

!

Does the cigarette burn out on its own in the ashtray, or does it need you to hold it? You don't even have to inhale—YES! That's how you know it's packed with chemicals (gasoline, misery, and all sorts of additives).

Hey, if you love it, more for you!

Eat at least four apples a day! That's how my old man quit smoking.

As soon as the war wrapped up, I packed my little one onto a plane and headed straight for America; at the airport in Frankfurt, the kid experienced a total shock:

Some lady in a heavy coat with a mustache under her nose!! I don't even have enough room here to describe his reaction when he saw someone with a cigarette for the very first time in his life! Because up until then, in his three and a half years of life, he hadn't seen anyone anywhere in the US smoking 🙂

I quit smoking myself once I moved to Los Angeles and found out I was pregnant; before that, I’d spent over a decade telling myself I was just a social smoker and that I only smoked because:

--- everyone else does: I didn't want to breathe someone else's smoke, better my own
--- and my grandmother smoked—from the thirties (just a few puffs) all the way through the seventies (they had to amputate her legs toward the end; she ended up with heart disease)
--- an aunt from Chicago used to smoke (she passed away a long time ago)
--- my dad (who was already getting some wrinkles by his third decade) offered me a cigar with coffee, saying, "Come on, kid, light up, don't go sneaking off behind the school building to do it secretly"

My husband never smoked: he never even thought about it, let alone worrying about whether he had a cigarette and a lighter in his pocket... 👍

When I came back from the outback to Los Angeles, I started smoking again after eleven years of being smoke-free; I’d be sitting outside having a smoke, and my son was absolutely devastated to see his mom doing it! He practically begged me to stop,

saying I looked "like a prostitute," or "like some bitch"
like a drug dealer
and how primitive it was,
how only low-class people and those who have no self-respect smoke
how there aren't any vitamins in a cigarette
and so on

I smoked for nearly a year—then suddenly, I tossed the whole pack and the lighter right into the trash can! (The Smith method—it's best to just stop that way, rather than saying "not tomorrow, I'll finish this one"—you just throw EVERYTHING away immediately!)
For a few years now, I've been free from that garbage, thank God for avoiding death!

Lily, if you need any help quitting, let me know 😘

My father hasn't smoked in ages; you saved his life! My mother never smoked; my sister and her partner never smoked either—people with character, they respect themselves! When they get the urge, they just snack on peanuts or munch on an apple!!

Nathan Kern77, good luck with your journey to stay smoke-free 👍 it isn't just about a lifestyle choice, it's truly a matter of life and death!
