Yeah! It’s watchable, but I wouldn't drop any cash on it... not quite worth the price of admission. Saw it on TV recently. Kinda gives off those Fight Club vibes, but honestly, it was a bit of a letdown...
So, if someone runs BOINC on a gigahertz Athlon or a Core 2 Duo pushed to 4GHz, they end up with the same credits? Feels a little rigged to me. Especially for the guys with the heavy-duty rigs... while their machines are churning through two or three packets a day, these weaker setups are lucky if they scrape by with one...
Hey, can someone walk me through this BOINC thing? I’ve been running SETI@home for a few days now and managed to knock out a couple of completed "units." Every single one says "Breaking News" in the status. What does that actually mean? When do I actually see the credit for the work done?
I didn't quite catch what this "Microsoft" thing is all about...
Anyway, does anyone know of any research groups out there that actually pay for data processing? If I'm gonna let my rig run anyway, might as well make a little cash off it... 😉
So, slycrane94, since you're basically the king of overclocking, what should I run to cook my CPU? I need something light enough for an Athlon XP 1.2 GHz that actually does something useful—like drug research or molecular modeling. Also, I don't want it eating up all my bandwidth with massive data transfers... Any tips?

Reminds me of that joke going around college campuses lately... they say if you can't solve the math problem, just take the derivative... 😁
Looks like doctors are pulling the same stunt... 😉
I mean, look, you have a point... You can't really know exactly what code is running under the hood (unless you start reverse-engineering the app, which is usually illegal anyway). It’s the same logic as wondering if Windows, Unix, or macOS is secretly running some background process that isn't actually working for you, but for Bill Gates or whoever else... It’s not easy to prove, but honestly, it doesn't even matter—it's just illogical to worry about it...

Alright, here comes my political manifesto regarding all this.
Why pick SETI over anything else?
First off, all that medical research and stuff is done FOR corporations. You walk away with nothing if your company makes a breakthrough. Of course, it wouldn't be such a disaster if those same companies didn't just patent everything and sell overpriced meds. Well, they do. My company works for them, and then they rake in the cash. If the contract said they couldn't patent any discoveries, maybe I'd actually consider it.

Too bad hardly anyone here even runs it. Everyone loves reaping the rewards of scientific breakthroughs, but heaven forbid anyone actually helps out a little.
