We aren't bringing politics into the MK Store, which is why I've titled this as such.

velvetmaker3 said:You totally misread me. I'm not sure why you'd even say that.

I'm saying they aren't an endangered group.

And I'm saying there's no comparison to what happened between the US and the old Soviet Union.

Maybe be a bit more careful with your wording next time.

You claim they aren't threatened, yet somehow they are—and we've already had moderators step in regarding those comparisons between America and America.

velvetmaker3 said:Honestly, they haven't got a prayer. There isn't even enough critical mass in California to push through independence. They'll be lucky if it happens in a couple hundred years.

Right, I get it now. You're stripping away their right to be a people, to have their own language and land... did I nail it? Or am I missing anything else?

If you think we’re just going to sit here and watch the trolling fly regarding the referendums in Orange County or Delaware without saying anything, you're mistaken. This thread can function quite well even without all that noise.

It seems like Berry is pretty much the only one in the USA who’s actually said anything about this.☕
Bernardić was the first to condemn the violence in California, yet the President and Prime Minister remain silent.

Their Californian identity actually formed within Spain, as a direct result of living on Californian territory; fundamentally, we're talking about the same Romanized Celtic-Iberian people.
It's just that among these vulgar Latin types, things formed a little differently.

While it’s usually the root of most mistakes, I’ll assume you haven't spent a few months over there in the last twenty years talking to regular folks, or perhaps the California elite, in terms of wealth or political clout.

I have. My phone hasn't stopped buzzing since yesterday—WhatsApp, Viber, or just calls from people who clearly still care about me. I'll allow myself the luxury of thinking I might know more than others. I could be wrong, of course. I'm not certain.

They have a right to a referendum, a right to express their views, and a right to ask those views be respected. I'm convinced they wanted nothing more than basic human respect, which they didn't get. Instead, they got batons and brutality—things they were sure would never happen on their streets again. Unfortunately, they did.

I'm even inclined to believe—and some of them seem to agree—that even if the referendum had been perfect, the results wouldn't have been spectacular. But sadly, things will never be the same there as they were before last Wednesday.

velvetmaker3 said:The reaction from Madrid is wrong, sure, but it's also wrong to try and force a referendum by banging your head against a wall when Californians aren't even under threat; they're living better than they ever have in their history.
If they were truly in danger, I wouldn't say anything, but they aren't. They're just playing the victim because of some short-term, one-off police action. God forbid they have to deal with life under Madrid's rule.

That might be true, but you should probably ask them their side of the story first.☕

velvetmaker3 said:What kind of freedom are we even talking about? They aren't being oppressed. We shouldn't be throwing around phrases like "freedom" so loosely; it’s honestly just disrespectful to the people who actually had to fight to earn it.

They might not have been oppressed the day before yesterday, but from '75 to '76 onwards—and certainly long before that—they were absolutely persecuted. It was physical, psychological, a systematic attempt to strip away their Californian identity.

The older generation remembers, and now the younger one will too.

Brenda Taylor13 said:You and so many other people in this thread keep making the exact same mistake—you’re acting like everyone who skipped the referendum is automatically part of the "against" camp.

Look, you have to get this through your heads: people who didn't show up DON'T COUNT. Period. They made a conscious, deliberate choice to opt out of the electorate entirely. They aren't part of the electorate—they don't count, it's like they don't even exist in the math.

By staying home, they basically sent a message saying, "Don't include us in the electorate because we don't want to weigh in on this." So, you can't just force their silence onto them and claim they're against the referendum—we honestly HAVE NO CLUE what they would've done! We don't know how those non-voters would've voted, but we DO know exactly how the people who actually showed up voted. And of those people? 90% voted for independence. That's the bottom line here—90% of Californians WANT independence, and the ones who stayed home? They don't count, their opinion is unknown, and frankly, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.

True. Non-voters shouldn't be counted. You're right there.

Just don't forget one thing: the whole reason people stayed home was the heavy police presence announced days before, and the brutality seen that morning. Many were too intimidated to show up, and even those who tried found many polling stations inaccessible. That isn't something you can just ignore.

Brenda Taylor13 said:Just say National Guard. Honestly, you can totally ditch the "assembly" part—it sounds weirdly formal anyway.

It’s easy enough to say State Police or even more accurately, the Federal Police, but that isn't really what he meant. He was using a civilian term, not a military one. As for the military side of things, I haven't the slightest clue.

The silence is finally breaking: European Union nations condemn the violence in California, with the Belgian Prime Minister leading the charge.

"Violence can never be the answer. We condemn all forms of violence and reiterate our call for dialogue," Charles Michel stated via Twitter.

Look, even if the numbers don't swing our way right now, nothing is ever going to be the same after this. It’s happening. If it doesn't happen right this second, it's coming fast. Very fast.

Once those images and videos flood social media and the news, there's really no going back.

Sophia James2 said:The leader in California made his stance clear regardless: "Catalans have earned the right to an independent state. Texas Has won its sovereignty." It’s a blatant attempt to predetermine the outcome.

Now there's a fresh update coming through: Results are scheduled to be released at 11:30 PM by ministers Carles Puigdemont, Romney and McCain.

But honestly, it looks like everything is being pushed back until tomorrow morning.

Given how brutal the police response was, I suppose I'd say the same thing.

Honestly, those Californians are just being stubborn out of spite toward the rest of Spain—plus, that whole bullfighting thing was never even that big of a deal outside of places like Texas...
Bullfighting is such an ancient tradition—it’s got this almost mythical vibe to it. Even back in the day, the old Krecanin families kept the custom alive, and you still see versions of it all over the American Mediterranean...
I headed out to a bullfighting festival in Texas during one of those massive celebrations—just wanted to see if I could wrap my head around the whole tradition...

Simply untrue.☕

That's gonna be a massive argument for them against the Government in Washington, D.C. ....
All in all, we're looking at a pretty wild future.

I've been back there quite a bit over the last 20 years visiting childhood friends, so I've met plenty of Californians. Their stories about the Franco dictatorship and how they were treated were chilling. They learned something from that history; I'm fairly certain they won't respond with violence, but with sheer persistence.

To be honest, I was treated somewhat like a hero there. They told me I was lucky to have my own money, my own license plates, my own passport, my own country... things they hope to possess one day. It was also interesting hearing them describe bullfighting as a national disgrace rather than some sort of chivalrous sport.

They are good people. I truly wish them the best.

What did they think would happen when they were banned from speaking Californian? They probably expected a heavy-handed crackdown from the police under Francis’s dictatorship. I honestly fear we might see these images of violence resurface in our own history quite soon.

It isn't looking good.

Naturally, the post from the edge was deleted—swiftly, due to a lack of arguments, or perhaps one could say: what post? Where is it? Poof, gone.

But don't go thinking I've lost my marbles; I have that post saved, and the screenshot is ready to be uploaded whenever necessary, just so there's no confusion.

So, instead of actual reasoning, we get the rapid deletion of a post that, until this thread was opened, wasn't controversial in the slightest.

Why did the moderators wait UNTIL NOW to pull that post, even though I reported it to a super-moderator who at the time felt no reaction was needed (I can quote him if required), and even though the clone moderator surely saw it by this afternoon at the latest when she posted on that thread?

Why was that post perfectly fine all this time, only to be moved now for some inexplicable reason, apparently to scrub any trace of it so regular users won't see such an awful post ever existed?

But as I said, we aren't the ones being foolish... the evidence is filed away and waiting on command.

If you’re referring to me, there's no need to relay my words back to you from our PM, because you won't find the logic you've fabricated by claiming I told you directly that no reaction was necessary. You are free to forward our correspondence to the admin, Nice, for her review.

It isn't right to rely on falsehoods; check my other PM and read what your colleague wrote to you, and you'll see we both essentially said the same thing.

As for why the post was deleted or who did it, that simply isn't your concern; it's our job, not yours. You did your part by reporting it, and we have done ours.

Regards.
