restlesssurfer97 said:And then what about the places where they actually have plenty of people? What are we supposed to do with them then?

Man, she really covered every single angle there, Carlos.

restlesssurfer97 said:There’s nothing deep about it, honestly, it’s just basic math at the end of the day.

If all those hours people aren't working on Sundays don't get paid, you really just have to crunch the numbers.

Just to make it super easy to wrap your head around, let's say you have a local grocery store with six employees. If you pass a law banning Sunday shifts, you've basically wiped out six shifts from the schedule, which means one whole worker becomes redundant because their weekly hours just vanished.

It's a simplified way to look at it, but it gets the point across perfectly.

Did you seriously think you could just pass a law to screw over small business owners and expect them to maintain the exact same payroll costs while their revenue takes a hit?

In most stores, they’re already shorthanded—I mean, you walk into some places that are like 5,000 square feet and there are literally only three people working the whole floor.

restlesssurfer97 said:The direct fallout from banning Sunday shifts is going to be thousands of people losing their jobs.

It’s honestly on the same level as messing with the federal minimum wage.

Most people just don't seem to wrap their heads around how much this actually impacts real lives.

Yeah, right—I guess they'll just go make masks and gloves back in rural Ohio instead.

Jessica Gonzalez said:It’s not like working on Sundays is banned, so how would people get to church? Are you saying they’d choose money over Jesus?

Go screw yourselves, you anti-religious jerks. Seriously, if your entire purpose in life is just mocking people, you're pathetic.

Man, they already are—feel free to join the party.

Jessica Gonzalez said:In Japan, plenty of shops stay open 24/7, so I guess that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't smart. It seems easy to just cherry-pick an example that fits your point. At the end of the day, stores are private businesses, and it's really up to their own leadership to decide if those hours make sense for their bottom line.

Look, it's a solid business move because, let's face it, you aren't really getting paid any extra for working Sundays compared to any other day of the week. If anyone tried to mandate that Sunday pay should be a 300-$$133 premium, you can bet your life it wouldn't fly anytime soon.

I mean, there are definitely people out there living that life, no matter how pathetic it sounds.

Like, they have to play along and say they’d love to take the kids to church in the morning and then spend the whole afternoon cooking up a big family feast together.

But deep down, in the back of your mind, you’re thinking that people should just keep working through Saturday and Sunday, because let’s be real, those are basically the only days my husband actually touches a spatula, and besides, once the house gets loud and chaotic, you can't even hear yourself think, so I'm sitting there wishing for a Monday off instead, just so I can enjoy a quiet, empty house all to myself.

Man, just call out sick on Monday. Claim a sudden case of food poisoning on the drive in. 🤣

Jessica Gonzalez said:It might not matter, but you don't seem to want to see it. Restaurants, gas stations, movie theaters, national parks, hotels, toll booths, police, firefighters, a huge chunk of the healthcare system, water utilities, power plants, airports, anything involving flights or ships, buses, trucking, telecoms, media—you name it. Thousands of people work on Sundays just so everyone else can relax in peace because the infrastructure supporting that lifestyle is running. Grocery stores aren't special; clearly, there's demand for them every single Sunday. It's not my issue if someone feels they have no choice but to work for peanuts behind a register on a Sunday. My wife does similar work and occasionally works Sundays, but she’s working toward moving away from that. It’s the same thing with doctors and nurses right now; nobody forced them at gunpoint to enter those fields. Every job has its pros and cons, and I guess I don't quite have the energy or interest to feel bad for everyone's situation. I also know what it's like to work through the night while others sleep—like if I had to call Ribić for security?

On weekends, folks watch five different games on ESPN or wherever (many people follow the NFL and NBA during the late hours too), and I suppose they think the commentators recorded their voices on Saturday.

so then Germans are stupid and we're geniuses

Laura Chavez93 said:I generally try to steer clear of grocery shopping on Sundays if I can help it... I often find myself auditing what I already have on hand—checking what absolutely needs to be used up—just so I might avoid a trip to the store altogether

Honestly, same here

Jessica Gonzalez said:I feel like this whole debate about Sunday store hours is just more political theater. Honestly, if you’re against stores being open on Sundays, maybe just don't shop there on those days and let the market decide. If enough people actually stick to that, I guess businesses will pivot pretty quickly. Still, it’s probably fine to have shops open just in case, right? People online love to cry about what happens to cashiers, but they rarely mention all the other workers who are also on the clock on Sundays—and there are plenty of them. I can't think of a single person in America who hasn't picked something up from a store on a Sunday before.

I hate to admit it, but I totally agree—it's hypocritical, but yeah, I'm with you on that.

And where on earth are you guys getting the idea that stores won't even be open this Sunday?

restlesssurfer97 said:Well, look on the bright side, the Coronavirus basically forced you to finally take those vacation days😂

Sad, sad truth—if it weren't for this whole mess, we'd just be stuck listening to pre-season propaganda and all that nonsense.

restlesssurfer97 said:Prika, look, the US is huge, and if you aren't feeling the vibe under the current boss, you just pack your bags and head somewhere better, because none of those Sunday work bans or minimum wage nonsense is going to save you.

I mean, I don't plan on moving to the EU—I'd probably make more cash and actually get some respect, for sure—but right now, it's just not on my radar.

That was actually my plan for this spring (just ditching this moron once and for all), but then Coronavirus came along and totally screwed me over. ☕

I'm basically on my first vacation since 2019—it's April 2020 now—so what the hell are you even talking about?

Amanda Evans2 said:I couldn't disagree more.
We shouldn't be banning work; we should be paying for it properly.
If we follow that logic, should we just ban everyone else from working too? What makes retail employees so special that they shouldn't work on Sundays, unlike nurses, police officers, or journalists?...

To me, banning any kind of labor is utterly senseless.

you really think stores around here would stay open if they had to cough up an extra 200 bucks$100 for every Sunday shift? It’d be "unprofitable" faster than you can blink.

Honestly, if you think a grocery store is just as important as a hospital where people are literally fighting for their lives—man, just go find some therapy or something.

Matthew Young35 said:Am I allowed to repair excavators on a Sunday?
I am.
So why is retail being prevented from operating on a Sunday?

Seriously, has anyone actually asked the people working here if they even want to work on Sundays? Like, is anyone forcing you? Pretty sure the shop owners aren't exactly clocking in on a Sunday themselves.😉

Amanda Evans2 said:Bigger crowds on Saturdays
How exactly do you explain why they pushed this through right now, specifically when the crowds are at their worst?
Especially since we're seeing people finally heading back to their weekday jobs from Monday to Friday...

As far as I'm aware, that law dates all the way back to 1956.
2020 minus 1956 equals 100.
Bravo...

Honestly, Sunday work should probably be scrapped entirely—but hey, why are they cooking up this nonsense now? Who knows. It’s all just one giant improvisation at this point. Those working the standard Mon-Fri grind aren't pulling 8 AM to 9 PM shifts (well, most of them aren't, anyway), so I don't see any issue with this.

I think maybe in Austria they’ve had Sunday bans for like a hundred years or something... or maybe I just read that somewhere.
