Nicholas Newman2 said:I don't think Binotto is lying to anyone. It’s just that Ferrari fans are being as high-strung as a bride on her wedding day. Combine that with chronic laziness, and you end up with mass apathy.🤷

I mean, I don't really see any reason to be overly optimistic here...
Honestly, I fully expected him to choke during qualifying in Austin, and even if he had, I wouldn't have blinked. It wouldn't have been a shock, and I definitely wouldn't have written off his entire season because of it.
I'm still lagging by about 0.3 to 0.5 seconds. Honestly, if I could bridge that gap, it would be massive progress compared to last year. I'm just holding onto the hope that the rest of the season stays mostly mid-pack, maybe even throwing in a few better results every now and then.

Honestly, they got absolutely slapped out there. Even Bottas and Hamilton didn't manage to pull off a perfect lap—if you combined their best sectors, they would've been about 0.100 faster.

They basically got slapped in this race. They’re trailing by a massive margin, so the guys at Mercedes were just casually playing cat and mouse out there. No attempt to catch up, no nothing. Just chilling.
And honestly, I don't recall them being this far behind Mercedes at any single race last year. This gap isn't even close to what we saw before. 🤔

Watch the video instead; it gives a much clearer picture.
If we just rely on screenshots, it’ll look like the people defending themselves are in the wrong 98% of the time.

It’s not even about the defense...

The thing is, Leclerc's entry into that corner was almost as natural as Ricci's...😁
Honestly, I have no clue what he was thinking or what kind of wildly optimistic logic led him to believe he could dive through that corner, let alone pull off an overtake.

Technically, he did fine because he didn't lose anything, but he could've easily been wrecked. He could've been easily shoved sideways or hit from behind after a move like that—not just by Vettel or Max, but potentially by his own teammate coming back onto the track, or even that Haas behind Max, and that would be it...

Expecting someone to brake or move off the racing line during a race start is pretty delusional and naive, even if it is a teammate...
And Leclerc could have taken that corner normally if Vettel and Max had simply decided to brake, swerved off the racing line, or just vanished into thin air...

Richard Walker38 said:That's how he used to charge in like a maniac against others last season. We'll just remember how he screwed himself up diving at Hamilton and spinning out after contact, and we'll also remember the situation with Max, which is pretty similar to this one—except Max didn't back down then...

Except there's one tiny difference: this time it's Leclerc charging in like a maniac where there's zero space, not Vettel...

The situation with Max is the polar opposite of this...
Meaning, Leclerc is in Vettel's shoes here, and Vettel is in Max's...
Because as far as I recall, Vettel also forced his way inside Max mid-corner, right into his racing line...

Both were over-optimistic attempts to pass.
Only difference is that the Vettel vs Max duel was a direct fight without anyone else around, so Max knew exactly what Vettel was doing and didn't need to worry about anything else...

On the other hand, this is a race start where there's total chaos everywhere, so it's not exactly brilliant to force it like Leclerc did to Vettel...

What Leclerc did was classic: you can't win a race in the first few hundred meters, but you can certainly lose it...

Nicholas Newman2 said:That’s exactly where he screwed up. Instead of letting Leclerc battle Max, he just focused on building a gap and burning through those hard tires.

It’s easy to play general after the race is over...
And yeah, I totally agree that it would have been the smart move for Vettel, but who knows how much Vettel actually expected Leclerc to be breathing down his neck right there...
In my opinion, he was way too preoccupied with what Max was doing to even realize Leclerc was trying to muscle him out on the outside...

Go ask darkmarlin16 in the moderator section if you're that desperate for answers. I know you can get through to them. 😛

If you aren't high or tripping, maybe try asking them—one of them might actually know something. 🤷
I don't have the authority to answer in those specific "official" threads. 😁

That’s exactly how you’re going to talk about Daniil Kvyat, too. 😁

Alexander Albon is always there. 😁
If TickTock isn't the place for this, then I don't know where else to go...🤣

So, what’s the verdict on that radio message from Valtteri Bottas at the end of the race:

To whom it may concern, fuck you.

😁
Was he aiming that at Toto Wolff, Lewis Hamilton, or just shouting into the void? 🤔

Regarding the start, check this out:

This was a massive blunder from Leclerc, way more than just a mediocre attempt...
Slow the footage down to 0.25x and just watch how Leclerc handles it...
He takes this totally unnatural line into the corner, risking a slide off track and losing his front wing just like Ric did—and he didn't even have anyone next to him,
let alone a pack of cars flying past him.

Plus, he actually had a much better start than Vettel, not even close...
Vettel lost momentum because he got blocked by Max Verstappen.
Instead of capitalizing on that, Leclerc just charged into the turn like an absolute idiot...

If he’d aimed straight for Max Verstappen, he would've cleared him easily.
image
But nope, he tried too hard in the first lap and completely choked...

Also, Mario, he wasn't even on the grass there, nor did he lose anything significant...
And at the end of the day, this was his fault anyway, just like when he went off into the grass.

Whatever, the kid is still plenty good for now.
Ferrari clearly wasn't up to par this weekend, and I'm pretty sure Kimi Räikkönen would've been just as bad, if not worse, under these same conditions...
So yeah, the kid is doing just fine.

Richard Walker38 said:And how much did Vettel actually gain by shoving his teammate? You aren't worried about the guy going off into the grass? Yeah, right. You're just a biased fanboy closing your eyes to your favorite driver's nonsense, which basically disqualifies you from any actual conversation.

There was plenty of room, but senior Vettel decided to dive left and shove his teammate just to defend his spot.

Hello Leclerc🙂
Leclerc went off into the grass all on his own in lap 9, totally unprovoked...☕

Go find Maria so you can finally watch the race together...
Maybe then you'd actually know what you're talking about. 🙂

Don't look at the distractions, don't look at the distractions...

If you can actually see Vettel in this clip, then I'll give you props. 🙏

Everyone’s screaming bloody murder about how Lewis Hamilton gets special treatment while Valtteri Bottas gets shafted! At least Mercedes lets them actually race until a certain point in the championship.

What planet are you living on? 🤣
If Ferrari had what Mercedes has, you know exactly what Leclerc would do. 🙂

Right after Vettel and Lewis pit, Leclerc would suddenly start braking mid-track just to leave Lewis sitting right on his bumper...
Then Lewis would get blocked by every trick in the book, giving Vettel a clear shot to overtake him.

And then Leclerc would head straight to the pits, and whatever happens, happens. ☕

Honestly, I half expected this nonsense. They aren't even capable of coming up with their own ideas; they just poorly copy Mercedes and those "world-class" Bottas strategies...

Based on what?
If you ask me, Max is easily the worst driver Red Bull has ever had.
I don't see what changed on that front. 🤷

Just because I think Marko and Christian Horner are going to dump Pierre Gasly incredibly fast doesn't mean I think Max is better than him. It just means he’s probably going to get booted out just as quickly as Kvyat was.

mellowtiger83 said:@Tibi "accidentally" forgot to mention that Leclerc ran himself into the grass. Right after that little excursion, Vettel’s lead shot up to 17 seconds—even though he’d been sitting pretty with a comfortable gap just moments before!

Do some homework... it won't cost you a dime. 😁
The FIA just dropped the latest update on Formula 1 regulations. It’s the usual bureaucratic dance, really. Just more paperwork and fine print to sift through while we wait for the cars to actually show up on track. Honestly, half the time I can't tell if they're trying to make racing better or just making it more complicated for the sake of having something to do. Stay tuned, I guess.

Leclerc went off into the grass on lap 9 and just threw away three seconds. Great.
If he hadn't flown off, the gap wouldn't have been 17 seconds—it would've been 14.
Massive gap. 🤔
I honestly don't get it. What exactly are you trying to prove with that whole Leclerc grass excursion? 😕

mellowtiger83 said:Looking at the pure race pace, Leclerc was clearly faster than Vettel. If they had actually let him through, he would've cruised to a finish about 5 or 6 seconds ahead of Vettel without breaking a sweat.

In the second half of the race, Leclerc’s pace was clearly miles ahead. Vettel’s performance was just pathetic once he switched from the mediums to the harder tires.
Only 29 laps to go and God help us. After that, it’s just going to be a slow, painful crawl to the finish.
Well, you can tell everything you need to know when Vettel's fastest lap happens back on lap 16. 🤦

mellowtiger83 said:And let's not forget how Vettel completely forgot that he’s aggressively squeezed his own teammate at the start more times than I can count. He nearly sent him straight into a disaster, especially since Leclerc had a way better launch and definitely knew exactly where he was by Turn 1.

So, what exactly do you think Vettel should have done at the start?
So, what, you just swerve right and slam into Max? Is that the plan? 😁
Damn, Leclerc really went off the rails there. He pushed way too hard where he shouldn't have, and honestly, that could have ended in a total disaster.
Look, at least the kid kept his cool enough to not completely screw things up...

mellowtiger83 said:It’s going to be pretty wild watching Vettel's season fall apart.

Hardly seems likely this season, though. It looks like Ferrari actually sorted out their priorities for once...
But if Vettel doesn't snag the title this year, expect some serious bloodletting at Ferrari in 2020...

Seems pretty obvious that Ferrari told Leclerc this is his learning year—basically telling him to watch his step and just be the ultimate wingman...
His real run starts in 2020, when he'll finally have total freedom.

And let's be real, the kid is definitely going to be a top-tier driver and a tough nut to crack...

If a junior driver did this to him, there would be absolute chaos on the radio.

Normal conditions? If you were sitting behind him and the team told you to back off, you’d probably just floor it and overtake him instantly.

What "normal conditions" are we even talking about when it's Vettel's race?...
Good grief, Vettel's fastest lap was on lap 16. Yeah, obviously something was wrong with the car, the engine, or the tires...
Whether we actually find out why is one thing, but calling this "normal" is definitely not.
Melbourne Grand Prix - March 17, 2019 in Formula 1 ·
Not really, depends on how you interpret that statement 😁

The Midfield is incredibly tight right now, and everyone in that pack is basically breathing down each other's necks 🙂
Even if Magnussen was the only one in the same lap as Bottas, everyone else trailing him was still relatively close...
For instance, there was only a 2.9 second gap between Hulkenberg (7) and Gasly (11)...

Look, after Australia, it’s hard to be certain about anything except a few things:

Mercedes is miles ahead of everyone else...
Williams is lagging way behind the rest...
And those are the only two things that are crystal clear ☕

Ferrari and Red Bull Racing look pretty close for now, but they might actually be further behind Mercedes than they are ahead of the field...
All the other teams are so bunched up that it's anyone's guess who finishes fourth and who ends up ninth this season...

neonfox65 said:I told you so. I knew this was going to be a total mess.☕

No big deal, nothing's changed...
If Gasly loses his seat before Monaco and Kvyat jumps in to take over, honestly, the odds of that scenario playing out just skyrocket. 😉

Hard to imagine anyone dropping lower than McLaren...
Total roller coaster today. 😢

First RB race with Honda and—get this—they actually snagged a podium. Apparently, they’ve got the second-best chassis after McLaren or whatever. Just wow.
So, McLaren's sitting there with exactly ZERO points? Just zero. Pure comedy.
Williams is the only one sitting there with zero points. Everyone else—even the STR Honda guys—managed to scrape at least one.🤦

Hmm, who was it that spent all last year arguing about the races? 😁

Mario: "Wait, you guys didn't see that?"
Others: "Dude, what part of the start did you miss?"
Mario: "I wasn't watching the first 20 minutes."
Others: "Yeah, but after an hour had passed..."
Mario: "Fine, I wasn't even watching the first hour."
Others: "Okay, but during the last five laps!"
Mario: "Look, I haven't actually watched the race yet, but I promise I will tomorrow!"

Seems like Mario and Henry might be cut from the same cloth. 😁🤣

Richard Walker38 said:It was obvious that Charles Leclerc was faster than Sebastian Vettel the whole race. Ferrari should have adjusted to the pace and used strategy to put Leclerc ahead so he could actually try something for the rest of the race. I’m not saying he would've hit the podium, but he definitely would've been in the fight if they hadn't wasted the race behind Vettel.

What race were you even watching? 🙂
image

image

He was slower for more than half the race—and I mean seriously slower...
Specifically, Kasnil was 17 seconds behind Vettel after they both pitted...
So through lap 29, Leclerc was averaging about 0.6 seconds per lap slower than Vettel!

Then suddenly, first Hamilton's times start dropping, and then Vettel's drop even more...

Only then does Leclerc on the Hard tires start being faster than Vettel.
And he didn't catch him until lap 50, just 8 laps before the end...
image

The whole time he was running slower laps than Max, trailing him by 15 seconds...
Yeah, right. Like he'd pass Vettel in 8 laps, pass Alexander Albon on the way, and somehow catch and pass Max too. 🙂

My mistake. Even if he suddenly started pulling 2-second faster laps, he wouldn't have caught him.
Maybe he'd see his tail lights, but passing him? Not a chance. Not even if he drove way faster than Valtteri Bottas for those last 8 laps. ☕
USA/Central Park 03.17.2019 in Formula 1 ·
Richard Walker38 said:My take? Leclerc was flying and didn't have any issues, while Vettel was just dragging himself around the track. Honestly, Vettel made a couple of dirty moves against his own teammate—if he had any brains, he would’ve just let him through to actually fight for the podium. Who says Leclerc couldn't have caught Max if they'd just unchained him? Ferrari is pinning everything on Vettel again, which is a massive mistake. Total race management fail.

Leclerc wasted so much time stuck behind Vettel. He definitely had the pace to be in that podium battle if they'd just let him overtake earlier in the race. Things only got worse later on.

What are you even talking about, 🤦
Leclerc was trailing Vettel by about 12 seconds before Vettel pitted, and once Leclerc pitted, that gap grew even wider...

By the time he closed in on Vettel at the end of the race, Max was still sitting about 15 seconds ahead...
and that was Max running laps roughly half a second faster than Leclerc the entire time he was chasing Vettel...
So, unless Leclerc suddenly finds a way to drive two seconds per lap faster than Valtteri Bottas right after passing Vettel,
there's no way he was catching Max, let alone sniffing a podium finish. 🤦
USA/Central Park 03.17.2019 in Formula 1 ·
Nicholas Newman2 said:They could've handled the Leclerc-Vettel situation way better in the chaos, just so they didn't completely screw him over right away. Just call him in for fresh tires and hunt down a fastest lap. It would’ve smoothed over that awkward mess and probably even snagged an extra point for Ferrari.

That was really the only logical move...
Why they didn't? God only knows. 🤷
It feels like they were dodging something because it’s bizarre they didn't push for the win at Ferrari when they were sitting in the perfect spot to take it. Plus, they wouldn't have had to deal with the media grilling them afterward...

So there’s zero logic behind it, unless they were dealing with some massive issues with the Mercedes-AMG power units in both cars...
