School closures/delays? in Students & Teens ·
Honestly, I’d be the first one to lose it if they switched my kid to an afternoon school schedule, especially once they hit those older grades when the workload and the hours start piling up 🤷

But hey, it’s not like they’re making kids go to school for just half a day anymore, so this is actually an improvement 🤷
Either way, the American education system is in pretty rough shape

It’s not like someone just dreamt this up; it’s really the only way forward since there's simply no more room 😁 The plan is for everyone to chip in during the morning hours, but we’d actually need to invest in building more schools first (instead of wasting money on things like public fountains, for example 😁)

Why does it feel like there are always so many projects popping up at the last minute? It seems like everyone is complaining about them lately.
I actually lost my cool at daycare the other day because they sent home a note asking us to bring something in tomorrow. I was already starving, so I had to run out to a damn 7-Eleven just to grab something. Stuff like that just completely throws me off balance. 😂

I’m not entirely sure, but I think for first grade, if we get home by 5:00, she’ll have most of her schoolwork finished already. For second grade, she’ll probably tackle her homework on her own right after school, so we can just spend the afternoon going over anything she finds tricky.
maybe that’s just how little Johnny imagines it working out, but I really hope it goes that way.😁

Just thinking about the logistics makes me feel nauseous 😁 because I have no clue how we're supposed to juggle all those requirements when there aren't enough hours in the day as it is. Fine, that’s a whole different conversation. But basically? I’d gladly spare myself (and my husband, obviously) another year of that academic headache if I could.😁

School doesn't really worry me at all 😂 I'm not sure why, but I just don't get the feeling it's going to be stressful for me 😂

Not really. I think she'll definitely be intellectually ready, and likely emotionally capable enough to handle school too. But I still don't see the point in starting her a year ahead of schedule just so she ends up being alone for more than half the day when she's seven and a half—which would only happen in first grade. Plus, she'd be the only one from her preschool group heading off to kindergarten.
That would probably mean moving her to a different preschool class anyway, rather than just having them work on kindergarten prep worksheets with her.
Most importantly, I feel like having an extra year without the pressure of schoolwork will just help her hit the ground running once she actually starts.

I've decided to go with 7:30. Honestly, I can't think of a single reason why I'd need to head into school any earlier than that.

Yeah, I know a few kids who started out that way, and nobody really thought twice about it. I actually gave it some thought myself—my little one is 4 months old now, so I was wondering if waiting until 6 or 7 months might have been better.

Honestly, so many people just flat-out ignore what the experts say, and they'll tell me that every single kid is somehow "ready" whenever it suits them.

If the professionals say he's ready—and if he’s actually excited about his schoolwork and talking about wanting to start school—how do you think he’ll feel if you tell him he can't go just because you personally feel he isn't prepared?

frozenrider15 said:I have to disagree with the notion that victims of bullying are simply kids lacking social skills. Bullying isn't always about a lack of competence; kids target other kids for all sorts of petty, irrational reasons—differences that might seem invisible to anyone else. The real failure is when children don't know how to deflect the blow. But let's be adults here: the systemic failure lies with the guardians and institutions meant to protect them. We can't just dump the entire burden on kids who, let's face it, are often physically or psychologically incapable of defending themselves against relentless verbal or physical onslaughts.

The conversation has veered off course again... I'm done.

Well, yeah, those are exactly the kind of social skills being discussed here.

I was actually thinking more about those situations where a seven-year-old gets left behind in a group with four and five-year-olds because all their peers have moved on to kindergarten.

In our local preschool, the age range is pretty consistent; almost everyone is in the same grade, except for maybe three or four kids.

Also, why would he suddenly be bored at preschool if all his friends are still there? 🤷 Plus, they’re starting to prep them for elementary school, so things aren't quite the same as last year... 🤷
Which kid actually gets bored playing?

I feel like school is a lot like a playground; they used to be much more unpredictable and risky back in the day when kids just ran wild without any boundaries, but now everything is so heavily regulated and safe that parents end up stressing out over every little piece of equipment. 😁

Well, damn, my coworker actually burst into tears after her boss yelled at her 😂
But yeah, I agree with everything 😁

Brian Barnes5 said:Experts? Honestly, I doubt anyone can really claim to know what's going on after just glancing at a kid for ten minutes during one of those twenty daily appointments. From what I’ve gathered—and please, set me straight if I’ve got this wrong—these school readiness "specialists" basically just check if a kid can draw a stick figure, count to twenty, count backward from ten, write their own name, recognize colors, and button up a shirt. My little guy is four, and he breezes through all of that without breaking a sweat, plus way more. He can sit still for as long as needed, color, draw, and tackle simple puzzles. But apparently, according to the rulebook, he’s still totally unprepared for kindergarten...
A close friend of mine actually decided to hold her son back a year, even though the professionals gave him the green light, simply because she said, "If his teacher raises her voice, he's going to burst into tears." Like, what good is it that he can draw a person if I can't be certain he won't bolt into traffic, clean himself properly after using the bathroom, or remember to lock the front door? What do we even call that kind of maturity? And does anyone actually bother to test for it? My kid only needs to be looked after for half the day. We don't have a grandma around to pick him up from school, greet him with lunch, make sure he doesn't accidentally burn the house down, or nag him about his homework. Once he leaves preschool, he needs to be ready to handle life independently and responsibly, which, let's face it, is a much bigger hurdle in the real world than knowing how to write or do basic math.

To me, having that extra year of being carefree is absolutely vital. If they start at seven, they'll be facing those solo afternoons by age seven and a half. Starting at eight and a half would mean they're better prepared when that transition actually happens.

frozenrider15 said:Here’s the breakdown, though it’s not really the main point:

- Not every kid walks into kindergarten knowing how to read, but man, it would be incredibly helpful if they could at least recognize the first and last sounds in a word, or handle basic phonemic awareness—you know, breaking a word down into sounds and putting them back together. It's all based on listening; they don't need to write a single letter yet, but they really ought to HEAR the sounds.

- As for the heavy vs. light books? I can't say much. The reality is that plenty of books can stay at school if the teacher organizes it that way—like workbooks or math packets. It’s also a fact that some parents don't even glance inside these backpacks, let alone bother packing them according to the schedule. Instead, the kid ends up lugging around music supplies, science gear, and religious studies books they don't even need that day, simply because some parent thinks "it's easier this way" or "they won't forget anything."

- The material itself is watered down compared to when we were kids. For instance, back in our day, we spent way more hours studying the season. We had to master so many concepts—spring in the garden, spring in the orchard, spring in the woods, spring in the vineyard, weather patterns, how people work, animals in the spring... nowadays, all that is condensed into maybe two lessons. And that's just one subject.

- Kids today are different. People talk about Gen Z—look it up if you want the deep dive, I won't get sidetracked—but the environment they are growing up in is fundamentally different. The circumstances are different.

- Regarding the heavy backpacks—yeah, they're heavy. But I remember my bag being a beast too, back when it felt like it was bursting at the seams once you tossed in the gym clothes. Definitely something that needs addressing. And as for those rolling bags? I have my doubts about how practical they actually are... hm.

On the topic of delaying enrollment—honestly, while intellectual maturity matters, emotional maturity should be the deciding factor. In my opinion, it's the most crucial part of the equation. That extra year can mean the world to certain kids; it gives them time to "ripen," to become more independent, develop social skills, and actually grasp what school is supposed to be. I have a student in my class right now, nearing the end of first grade, who is only just now realizing that school is a real thing. Until now, she was functioning on the level of a four or five-year-old. It’s been an uphill battle for her and her parents to keep up with the curriculum. She simply wasn't ready.

By the way... I'm no expert. I just work in a school.🙂

So does that mean there's actually less material and fewer concepts to learn? Is the learning window shorter? Are they just doing more lessons with less substance so they can breeze through everything more superficially?
Or is it just that kids today lack focus and don't study enough?

(Is there a thread about this on any of the parenting forums? I'm genuinely curious about this.)

I’m sorry, I don't have any content to rewrite for this user. Could you provide the post you'd like me to work on? kaže:
Hopefully so. 🤔 I'm starting to feel the same way about it. 🤷
My younger daughter will be part of that new curriculum—assuming they don't change things again—once the elementary school system switches to a nine-year model. She’ll actually be starting a year earlier than usual, making her part of that very first class.

I’m honestly not sure how they plan to pull this off—whether it means starting school earlier in the day or just extending after-school programs. But I think we should probably save that for its own separate discussion. 😁

Richard Morris43 said:Look, I’m not even going to get started on the West right now, that's a whole different conversation entirely. And honestly, if he was born in April or June, there's no way in hell I’d be enrolling him early.

Yeah, the curriculum is way more intense than what we had back in our day—at least that's what all the parents say, and seriously, *every* single parent seems to suggest waiting a bit longer to enroll your kid. There are a million reasons people give, ranging from the coursework being too brutal to the sheer weight of those backpacks.
My relative keeps telling me he's just too tiny... like, he won't be able to carry the bag and he'll basically be invisible to cars on the road.🤣
He's pretty much right in the middle of the pack for his age, standing about 4 feet tall and weighing around 46 pounds, but according to the logic flying around, he really needs to hit closer to 88 pounds before he's ready to tackle kindergarten.🤣

I’m genuinely curious if these concerns are valid. One thing I am sure of is that textbooks in later grades seem much thinner, more engaging, and better designed than ours used to be. Is there less time allocated for the same amount of material? Is there actually more to learn now? Or are the books just better, and maybe kids today just have shorter attention spans? I'd love to hear some perspectives on this.

It’s like we think we’re the only ones doing things right, while everyone else is just off.
Take Finland, for example—kids don't even start school until after 7:00 AM. Plus, their whole approach to early childhood education is structured completely differently; they don't treat first grade like the high-stakes jump into "real" school that we do here in the States.
