This whole idea about a thief(!) using an ambush😁 or an active shooter😁, especially the part about getting a bullet to the head😵, really doesn't need much commentary. We all know that thieves or active shooters aren't exactly operating at the skill level of Chris Kyle or, even better, Simo Häyhä.🤣
All your post is missing is a "thief SWAT team" or something along those lines.

Look, if you have bad intentions, who are you going after first? The guy you already know is armed.
If you're trying to swipe someone's gun, who are you going to target? The one where it's obvious he’s carrying.

Yeah, ambushes happen.

boldraven3 said:Exactly.

A friend of mine lives in Texas, and she once sent me a photo of a guy she was standing behind in line at Dunkin' while waiting for her coffee. He was right in front of her, placing his order, and sticking this massive rifle out of his backpack—or whatever he was carrying—and it looked almost intentional, you know? Like he wanted everyone to see exactly what he was packing. I couldn't tell if it was an AR-15 specifically, but regardless, there was no missing the fact that the guy was armed to the teeth.

Personally, I'm glad that carrying weapons around whenever you feel like it is illegal where I live. And I highly doubt that any of those people singing loudly about "gun culture" would be thrilled to run into armed individuals in a preschool hallway while waiting for their kids, or outside a school, in a grocery store, at Starbucks, or just anywhere else...

It's just basic paranoia, which then ends up feeding into everyone else's sense of paranoia.

Open carry is its own special brand of stupidity.

So, these people proudly flaunt their weapons thinking they’re somehow safer now.

They completely miss the point: if someone actually wants to pull off an ambush—like a thief or an active shooter—the people openly carrying guns are going to be the very first targets. You'll have a bullet in your forehead before you even realize you're under attack.

Striving to get stronger is always a smart move, no matter how old you are. 🙂

Daniel Chavez14 said:I don't lift anything that heavy... I'm not exactly a spring chicken anymore.

There are people in their 50s who handle those weights without breaking a sweat. It’s honestly not as intimidating as it looks at first glance.

Daniel Chavez14 said:To me, the biggest mystery is the bench press. Why would someone who’s moderately strong choose to lug around a long barbell with 135 lbs on it instead of just grabbing two 65 lb dumbbells?

You’re pretty much spot on. For the average weekend warrior, those differences aren't even worth stressing over. If you're training hard enough, whether you're using Bubbles or a barbell, you're going to see results.

Look, if we're talking pure strength training where the goal is maxing out power, the barbell wins every time. You get way more stability with a bar than you do with dumbbells, so you aren't wasting energy just trying to keep the weight from wobbling around.

Plus, a barbell is just way more practical. It doesn't matter how much you can lift—trying to get dumbbells into position for a bench press (or trying to set them back down once you're done) is always such a clumsy struggle. With a barbell, you’ve got the rack right there, making it easy to unrack the weight and put it back when you're finished.

From a practical standpoint, using a barbell makes it way easier to dial in the exact weight you need right then and there. You can load up whatever plate you want. If I’m hitting a set with 220 lbs today, I can easily bump it up to 225 lbs next session, and then move to 230 lbs after that.
If you’re training with dumbbells, you’re basically at the mercy of whatever gym you walk into. A lot of places don't carry adjustable dumbbells, so you're stuck jumping by 5-pound increments per hand—that's a 10-pound total jump. Once you start hitting the heavier weights, those jumps can turn into 10 pounds per dumbbell, which is a massive leap if you're actually trying to maintain linear progression.
So, if I pick up the 35 lb dumbbells today, there isn't a 36 lb pair waiting for me next time. The only way up is straight to 40. Dumbbells just aren't built for smooth linear progression.

Once you hit a certain level of strength, Bubbles actually start getting incredibly clunky.
Here’s an extreme example that just popped into my head:

He’s strong enough to crush an envious weight, but he still needs a hand just getting those Bubbles into position for the press.

Daniel Chavez14 said:I've never really understood why anyone would pick a long barbell over a pair of (sufficiently heavy) Bubbles.

How are you supposed to hit a 265+ lb squat or deadlift with just Bubbles? What about Olympic lifts?
Sure, there are alternatives, but it’s just not the same thing.

Plus, you can load a barbell pretty much however you want—anywhere from 45 lbs to well over 1,000 lbs.
With Bubbles, you're always going to hit a ceiling.

Third off, what does "sufficiently heavy" even mean? How do you expect one single pair of Bubbles to cover every exercise you'll need now and in the future once you actually get stronger?

If I had pushed her to take notes, it probably would have just caused more unnecessary friction—though, in all honesty, she wouldn't even have thought to do it herself.
And let's be real, there's no guarantee she’d suddenly decide to start checking things the second time around. It's highly unlikely.

Kids just aren't mature enough—and they're nowhere near responsible enough—to manage every little detail of their schoolwork, keep track of deadlines, or even figure out basic time management. I mean, hats off to the kids who actually can pull that off.

Is a kid supposed to work like a remote-controlled car where they only move when you point them in a direction?

Tyler Ruiz502 said:She’s just completely checked out when it comes to school 🤷
Honestly, she would probably be more than happy to head back to class with the same kind of attitude she had last Friday—you know, the one where she was practically begging me to just open things for her so she wouldn't have to lift a finger on Sunday.

Does a kid know they need to put on pants, a shirt, and shoes before heading to school? Most likely, yes. I doubt they'd show up to class in pajamas and slippers.
Basically, the child already understands they have to get ready to leave the house and go to school. Adding "packing the backpack" to that list shouldn't be such a massive hurdle.
Even if they can't perfectly organize everything themselves, you should at least be able to make them aware that the bag needs packing, so they might even prompt you by saying, "Hey, let's get my bag ready."

Besides, how can you be sure they aren't mature enough to just pack a bag when, as you put it, you "can't even fathom" letting them try to handle that part of the job alone?

Sure, if you listen to the armchair experts on these forums, they’ll tell you that if we just stop stepping in, the child will eventually figure things out on their own. Start being independent. Start thinking for themselves.
But let’s be real—not everyone is going to step up like that.

Check this out—"can't even begin to wrap my head around it." What kind of catastrophic fallout are we talking about here where missing a couple of textbooks or notebooks at school for a day or two is such a massive deal that you wouldn't even dream of looking into it?

The kid thought the book was "trash," so they figured they didn't have to answer any questions about it on their reading log or explain their reasoning—and the parent was totally fine with that.

A child shouldn't be the one deciding how they're raised and educated, whether it's the parent or the teacher.

Charles Ortiz3 said:I don't care about physics lessons.

Then why even start a thread?
Just grab any machine and start pulling cables. You're gonna waste money on something stupid regardless.

On American marketplaces, they usually claim the weight is "doubled," but most English sites say it's just heavier, not necessarily double—probably depending on the machine. Plus, some descriptions list different potential weights based on pulley setups for various exercises, which are usually just slightly higher, not double. That's why I want to hear about actual experiences or gear recommendations.

Ads, listings, and brochures all claim whatever they want.

You want real-world experience? Good luck finding someone who actually used a dynamometer on a cable to measure the exact force needed to pull, say, a 50 lb weight on a machine.
Regarding pulley ratios, the weight can only be multiplied by whole numbers. So it’s either doubled or halved, not "just a little bit more."
The only other thing that might bump the resistance up "a little" is friction in the pulley bearings and weight guide rods. And that's negligible. Maybe it adds a couple pounds if you're lucky. Resistance in pulleys and guides is a sign of a cheap, low-quality machine, not something a manufacturer would brag about.

Charles Ortiz3 said:Nah, some sites claim the actual weight feels twice as heavy because of pulley resistance. So if the weights are actually 150lbs, the user feels like they're pulling 300lbs.

The weight isn't heavier because of "resistance." It’s just that the force you're applying is increased based on how the pulleys are set up.

image

It's a basic pulley system. The left pulley is fixed to the frame, while the right one moves with the load.
That setup makes lifting easier.
You see this all the time on gym equipment like this where the pulley is attached directly to the weight stack.

You can also do it the other way around. Instead of the load being W in the top image, you're the one pulling the cable, and instead of the red arrow, there's a weight hanging from a FIXED pulley. In that case, lifting the weight becomes harder.

TLDR: If you want a heavier load, make sure the movable pulley moves with the section of cable you're pulling, not with the weight itself.
If there's no movable pulley, it's a 1:1 ratio. Whatever weight you have, that's what you're pulling.
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
With mining prices going absolutely crazy right now, I'm wondering what "normal" prices look like for graphics cards—basically, what would be a fair deal to grab one? I haven't really kept up with hardware for about 10 years, so I’ve lost all sense of what things should actually cost.

For instance, looking at these specific cards and their current prices on government.us:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, 8 GB DDR5, 256-bit, 1822/8008 MHz - $1433 (code 62640ADM)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 6 GB DDR5, 192-bit, 1797/8008 MHz - $917 (code 62708ADM)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 4GB GDDR5, WF2 - $480 (code 62733ADM)

What would be a decent price for these GPUs?

Is it just GPU prices blowing up, or is this happening with pretty much every other component too?

I’ve always been fascinated by posts like this. What’s the actual goal here, other than proving you have the intellectual and emotional maturity of an 11-year-old?
Look, you really have two paths here:
- Build some muscle and get a toned physique (don't worry, you won't end up looking bulky; you're nowhere near that)
- If you aren't training seriously, you might just end up gaining fat, leaving you looking soft and out of shape

Bottom line: strength training plus nutrient-dense food.

Check out rippedbody.jp—browse that site to grab the fundamentals of training and nutrition. What you actually need is a routine centered on free weights (squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, pull-ups...) and progressive overload (the site explains how that works). Basically, heavy weights (weights that feel you heavy) and constantly pushing past your comfort zone to force your body to adapt. Skip the machines or doing 50 bodyweight squats a day like some people here suggest. That's a waste of time.
Man, you've gotta put in the work if you want results; it's about shifting your lifestyle somewhat.

As for feeling embarrassed about hitting the gym, don't sweat it. You aren't the center of attention, and nobody is staring at you. People are there to work out, just like people go to a library to read or a grocery store to shop. Think of it like a trip to Target. You show up, do your thing, and leave.

Also, don't be afraid to hire a personal trainer. Yeah, it costs money, but if you find a solid coach who knows their stuff, spending a few sessions over a couple of weeks is totally worth it to get pointed in the right direction—especially if you aren't confident navigating all the info online yet.

Brenda Young2 said:I don't joke around much. I'm pretty thin—only 119 lbs at 5'7". Like, do you really think I can just walk straight into a gym right now?

Why not?
What’s the issue with being thin? You don't have to be ripped or overweight just to step foot in a gym.

I don't even know what any of this looks like; I actually had to Google how to do a deadlift.🤦

Again, where is the problem?
Above, Phil gave you a link that basically explains everything regarding training and nutrition. It's not rocket science. Plus, YouTube is full of high-quality creators who explain exactly how to perform these moves. It isn't complicated. Just ask, and people here will drop some good links for you.🙂

To start with, I wouldn't go to a gym; I'd just do everything at home since I have zero free time...

No time? Great. Above, Phil provided a link to a program using three basic lifts that gets solid results. This routine is more time-efficient than anything you could do at home with dumbbells or resistance bands. You can even scale it down to 3 sets instead of 5 to cut your workout time by a third.

Besides, you probably *do* have the time, you've just decided to spend it on something else. If working out matters to you, you'll carve out 3-4 hours a week for it (and it doesn't strictly have to be 3 days a week). But if every single day is packed with 16 hours of stuff you find more important than exercise, and you won't sacrifice one second for a workout, then whatever—you aren't going to make progress whether you have weights at home or just resistance bands. It's all about priorities, right?🙂
