Keith Davis4 said:hmmm.... been scrolling through some kickboxing stuff online, and honestly, it's just not my vibe xD ... I'm leaning more toward judo or maybe taekwondo 😁 but I can't decide which one hits better... judo seems like wrestling but with all these throws and rolls, right? And is taekwondo somewhere in the middle between judo and kickboxing? What do you guys think? I need something that’s going to work my entire body, not just target specific spots.

You asked about Muay Thai in your first post, so that’s why I suggested kickboxing.
In a solid kickboxing class, your whole body gets a workout.

Taekwondo is a sport that focuses primarily on kicks.

In modern competitive Judo, there aren't any strikes; it’s all about throws, leverage, and chokes.

Bottom line is you have to decide if you want a striking sport or something more based on grappling.

Boxing - Karate - Judo - Capoeira - Wrestling - Kickboxing - Tae Kwon Do

Looking for some advice on which one to pick. I'm on the shorter side (around 5'9") and pretty lean at 136 lbs, but I've got a bit of a rough edge to me. That’s actually why I want to get into combat sports—I’m way too aggressive for things like soccer or handball. xD
Got strong legs and good balance, though my upper body strength isn't exactly elite yet. I'm fast, too. Not sure which discipline would give me the best edge, so let me know what you guys recommend. 🙂

Kickboxing is the closest thing to Muay Thai.

I was thinking about martial arts that are easily accessible in America.🙂

I mean, I’m not talking about playing around with butterfly knives, or short swords, or batons, or even just learning how to defend yourself against a blade with your bare hands—no, no. I’m talking about actual combat using just a plain, everyday knife.

Ninjutsu.
I assume there are others out there too...

Yes.
Now go back and read the thread to find out where.

So far, I’ve withdrawn $1000 without any issues, but since I have a lot more in there now, I wanted to check the limits. I’m working this afternoon, so the branches will be closed by then—should I just head down to a local branch first thing in the morning instead?

There’s a daily limit. I think it's $1333.

You need to provide a bit more detail here. We can't really help you out if you stay this vague.

I suppose I should probably say something here, though I’m rarely one for the constant chatter that seems to define these forums. It’s funny how people gravitate toward certain topics with such intensity, almost as if they’re trying to prove something to an audience that isn't even really listening. I’ve been sitting back and watching the way discussions unfold lately, and there’s a certain predictable rhythm to it all. People jump in with their convictions, ready to defend their ground, while others just drift through the periphery. There’s a weight to some of these debates that feels unnecessary, yet everyone treats them like life or death. Personally, I tend to prefer the quieter corners of things... the parts where you don't have to shout to be heard. But then again, maybe that's just my way of looking at it... kaže:
That’s just how it is. Honestly, I’d almost be embarrassed to say it out loud, but we're talking about two completely different worlds...

I’ve been sitting here thinking about how much noise there is lately... just constant, aimless chatter that doesn't actually say anything. It feels like everyone is shouting to be heard, yet nobody is actually communicating. You see these threads popping up everywhere, full of people performing for an audience rather than having a genuine exchange of ideas. It’s exhausting, really. I tend to prefer the quieter corners of the internet, where you can actually sit with a thought for a minute before reacting. There’s a certain dignity in being deliberate with your words. If you’re going to contribute to a conversation, shouldn't it at least carry some weight? Lately, it feels more like a race to see who can be the loudest or the most provocative, which usually just results in a lot of empty calories for the brain... maybe I'm just getting old, or perhaps I've just lost my appetite for the spectacle. kaže:
Because it’s just fundamentally different. Once they actually sit down and look at the training footage, they'll see what I mean...

If you don't actually know what you're talking about, everything just starts looking exactly the same. It’s like people think Karate and Taekwondo are interchangeable, but they aren't. You see them all flailing their arms and legs around in those white gis, thinking they're doing the same thing...

But Morbid, she’s definitely "in the scene."
Since she trained in TKD, she’s going to be able to spot the differences between TKD and Karate easily.

Daniel Roberts72 said:Hey everyone,

I’ve finally decided to get back into the swing of things and start training a martial art again.
A quick bit about myself:
I’m in my early twenties. I have a tiny bit of experience with boxing—maybe two months total. Growing up, I was always active: rowing, soccer, long-distance running, hitting the gym... but then I went completely sedentary for about two and a half years, and I’ve put on about 15-17 pounds. 😁 Right now, I’m standing at 6'1" and 203 lbs. I wouldn't call myself fast, but my endurance is solid. Since I did some boxing before, I’d prefer something where I can use my legs too, especially since they’re still pretty strong from my rowing days. Given my athletic background, I’m confident I can get back into shape relatively quickly. I actually started jogging again a few weeks ago, and I can handle 4 miles at a steady pace without much trouble.
Anyway, I’m finishing up my degree, which means I finally have some free time. And since I know I'll be dealing with all sorts of idiots once I start my career, 🙄 I want to reach a decent level of self-defense capability.
Specifically, I’m looking for a martial art that offers visible results in a reasonable timeframe—not just in terms of conditioning and physique, but in actual street effectiveness. I can commit to 2-3 sessions a week, about two hours each, during the evening. I have zero interest in competing right now; I just want skills that work if I ever find myself in a tight spot on the street.
So, I’m asking you experts to recommend a specific martial art and perhaps a good gym in the Chicago area where I could learn it properly. If you could explain your reasoning, that would be great. That’s the gist of it. Thanks to anyone willing to help out. 👍

Since there aren't any Krav Maga or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools available in the city right now, my advice is to stick with boxing for the time being, or look into kickboxing or Muay Thai while you wait for one of those other options to open up.

Alternatively, try finding a club that follows an MMA program.

Larry Mendoza4 said:Hey, you seem to have a solid handle on things, so I have a few questions for you. I’m 21 and in average shape. I’ve never trained before or even been close to combat sports, but I want to start something. My goals are pretty standard: tone up, get in better shape, and just blow off some steam. Could you recommend a martial art? Also, what kind of costs am I looking at, where should I start, and any other basic info?

Boxing, kickboxing, or Muay Thai are great starting points. You can always switch to something else later if you want. That’s my take.

There’s a small hardware shop right near the Federal Reserve building in the financial district. I used to go there to pick up chains and heavy-duty ceiling anchors for sacks.
