☕😵😵😵🙂🙂

I know exactly why there's so much drama happening across the US—it's because you're still working... you just refuse to retire... 🤣

Jason Vaughn4 said:Hey everyone, I just received an offer to take over a cafe that's already up and running. The catch is that I’m currently employed by the government—specifically, I'm in the military. I’m not entirely sure if I’m legally allowed to open a business under my own name while serving. Does anyone here have any experience dealing with this kind of thing? If you do, I’d really appreciate some insight...

From what I know, the military has its own set of regulations that pretty much ban any outside work unless you get special permission—and let me tell you, you're never going to get it...

Jessica Grant56 said:What kind of crazy... times have we found ourselves in?!? Or maybe we just let them happen? All we’re missing now are flying broomsticks ridden by hot witches—though honestly, they aren't even what they used to be—along with some midnight light shows and the sound of people hauling crates, anchors, and heavy armor clanking all over San Francisco. Everyone felt that tension in their bones, and once things really started blowing up in the outskirts, even your basement didn't feel safe anymore. And good luck finding anything decent to eat amidst all this new junk growing everywhere...

Man, I don't know how you survived that mess...😁

Jeremy Anderson63 said:We're talking about advertising services here. There isn't any special exemption for those under US tax laws.

So, yeah... you'll need to register for a sales tax permit and get an ID number.

Then you have to calculate the tax and pay it up. You don't get to claim any input tax credits on this.

Honestly, you should have been doing this since back in 2013...

That is exactly what I'm dealing with right now—except it's a small business owner. When they brought in the paperwork, I told them to go grab a sales tax ID immediately. Well, I sent over the calculated tax today, but the filing won't clear because they didn't have an active ID for the last seven months—even though it's valid as of today... that's why I was asking earlier if anyone had run into this exact mess...

So, I’m looking at a small business owner here—someone without a VAT ID—who just got hit with some tax-free invoices for services from the European Union. Since they can't claim any input tax, they have to calculate and pay the sales tax themselves, but what's the deal with the actual tax filings?
You can't even submit the paperwork without a valid tax ID... so, do you just send it all in later??

Has anyone actually dealt with this mess before?

Jessica Grant56 said:I honestly have no comment, though this really does demand one. Especially since whenever I ask a simple question, all I get is whatever nonsense they post on the Department of Justice website—so, thanks for nothing.

Quoting the text from the Department of Justice website:

"Payout of dividends to an individual (member, shareholder) that have been earned:
- For the year 2000 and earlier, it is not subject to capital gains tax
- In the years 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, it is subject to capital gains tax—a 12% capital gains tax plus any applicable local surcharges based on the residence of the individual receiving the payout
- In the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, it is not subject to capital gains tax.
- In 2012 and later, it is subject to capital gains tax—a 12% capital gains tax plus any applicable local surcharges based on the residence of the individual receiving the payout."

So, look—my sleepy colleagues, aside from Richard Howard55 who has the very important job of finding a spot in the sun (man, it was brutal today...), please pay close attention to the underlined part. I am actually challenging you to explain: IT IS NOT SUBJECT ... what is that even supposed to mean???

Oh, wait—maybe I'm just being dense again. Maybe I missed something obvious? "It is subject to capital gains tax - 12% capital gains tax..." Please, someone give me a translation for that minus sign. Does "-12%" mean they’re going to give me 12% back when they pay my dividends?? Or was that supposed to be a plus sign? (In which case, nothing changes, and the government still takes their cut, right??) Honestly, I feel like I'm getting closer to a "eureka" moment, because at this rate, anyone would lose their mind—especially at +33 C. Definitely.

dubo, just let our dear Richard Howard55 take a break... 😁

And you—just grab those files and head down to the IRS. 🤣

Ugh, I am being so unserious lately...🤣

Jessica Grant56 said:Honestly, let those of us who have been hanging around here forever just tease each other a little—and maybe indulge in some nonsense—because this topic feels like it's meant for a tiny inner circle of people who absolutely have to deal with it, even if they really don't want to. It's basically a "help me, help myself" situation, or if all else fails, may God help us. As if being screwed over by the government wasn't enough already...

P.S. There are plenty of other topics about accounting that are much more suited for the geniuses among us...

Apis... I even asked the admin, so come on... how about an "Accounting 101 for Beginners" thread??

Dubois, just head down to the IRS and cite some random amendment—that should fix everything right up 🤣
Grab that red card the referee pulls out during a Yankees game and just hand them all out to everyone 🤣

How to sign up for Medicare in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
dustyscout8 said:I’m looking for some guidance here. On June 6th, our accounting firm submitted the physical registration paperwork to Medicare to officially link us with a client so we can begin managing their employee enrollments and terminations. We attempted to log into the system today to process our first termination for this specific client, but the business isn't appearing in the registry at all—their name is nowhere to be found in the employer database. Is there an additional step we need to take to properly "link" ourselves to this client's account so we can actually carry out these filings?
Many thanks

They usually process those right away... the issue is likely with your authorization forms.

goca25 said:If an employee's last day of their notice period is May 30th—meaning tomorrow—should I process their termination for that date, or can I push it to May 31st so there isn't a gap in their service history?

You can totally go with May 31st—just make sure that's clearly stated in the termination notice itself...

Steven Anderson14 said:I'm trying to file my first claim with Medicare today and I keep getting hit with this "Digital signature does not match data" error. Tried calling their support line, but it's just dead air. No one's picking up.
Anyone have any clue what's going on?

Every time I restart my computer, it stops working for me—so I just open ActiveClient, go to My certificate, right-click the one I'm using, and select "Make available in Windows." Once I do that, everything runs perfectly.

Support told me that once, so maybe give that a shot and see if it helps you out!
IRS and Tax Filing Issues in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
David Parker44 said:She called me... things have been rough lately... so I need to get this sorted out... basically, I just resubmit the corrected PD like I did the first time, right? I turned my stuff in by the end of the first month... and they're only just now processing it...

Wait, is the timing issue on your end or theirs? I had a few clients where the period on the PDU was based on the official Secretary of State filings (which were set up last year), but the office entered the date people actually showed up instead of what was on the legal docs—so the system kept rejecting it.

I pushed them to fix it because it would mean a bigger down payment for my clients—since the date falls after the 15th—but at first, they gave me all kinds of excuses about how "it's not possible" or "it's too complicated." So, I told them to send me a formal written request for the change just so I'd have paper trail coverage for why I was adjusting the dates. And wouldn't you know it? As soon as I asked for that, they magically made it happen... sure, I can get it done, but I'm not about to let them push me around.

Jessica Grant56 said:So, after doing absolutely nothing all Friday afternoon, then taking Saturday off, followed by Easter, then the Easter Monday holiday, and then Tuesday... well, let's call Tuesday the "warm-up" day—how about we actually get a move on? Grab your pens and some scratch paper and start knocking out those final reports. Even God took a day off, so surely you guys can handle more than just five minutes of work?!? Honestly, it’s time to get to it!

Honestly, this deserves a PUBLIC reprimand—how can you say women haven't been working? Do you seriously not count things like laundry, cooking, and cleaning as actual labor? 🙂

And for the record, I have to report that I spent Monday working my tail off, just like so many other accountants out there...

It just hit me... I actually love our moderators, even if they are a total handful—absolute chaos, pure intimidation, and just a whole lot of attitude. But honestly? We probably should have invented them in the first place. I mean, who else would keep the "regular characters" around here from biting each other's heads off??

Oh, please—you'd find a way to talk even if you were choking, you just can't stay quiet.🤣

We love you too, though! Every time you drop by, you stir things up and shake the whole place awake—and you know what they say about making an entrance...😁

Does anyone know where I can track down some study materials for the professional certification exams (specifically for the server/prep cook level)? We’re opening up our own small business and just signed everyone up to take the tests, but we have absolutely no clue what we're actually supposed to be studying. To make matters worse, nobody at the local licensing office seems to have any answers—it feels like they're either clueless or just playing dumb... if anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be so incredibly grateful! 🙂

I was just scrolling through some stuff online—honestly, you guys really need to grab this book. Check this out— [link]

You can grab it right here—saves some serious cash! $27...

I feel like there’s more to this—honestly, someone who actually knows their way around this stuff should probably weigh in.

Jamie Chase33 said:Anyone here actually messed around with an IBM setup before? I'm trying to weigh the pros of going the partnership route versus setting up a standard LLC—basically looking at those business structures where it’s more about the people involved rather than just a pile of capital. From what I gather, you don't need to park a bunch of startup cash upfront with an IBM, but the kicker is that the partners are personally on the hook for everything they owe.

Also, does that give you a bit more breathing room with the company's cash? Like, can you pull money out of the business account more easily, similar to how a sole proprietorship works, just because the owners are already putting their own skin in the game?

Take a look at Section 68 first. Let's nail down the basics...
