Gaming PC build for the next 2 years? in Desktops ·

Sam Rodriguez55 said:We've finally arrived... $3167 That’s true, but honestly, what’s even the point of a gaming rig if I can’t crank every single setting to the max? My main goal right now is to get that total down to $8,500... or even less if I can swing it...
I don't really need a terabyte of storage; 500 GB is plenty for me. As for the graphics card, let's keep it in the range of an AMD Radeon R9 280. I'm honestly torn between that and an NVIDIA GTX 770... you guys tell me, I just want a final decision... 🙂 I really need to get this cooling setup right because my PCs always end up overheating... I suspect there might be poor airflow in my room since my computer is tucked right against the desk. Honestly, I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to the motherboard, CPU, power supply, and case. I have no intention of overclocking the processor, so there’s really no need to spend extra on high-end components if they just drive up the price...

Thanks everyone, but I have to admit I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed... there are just so many different builds to choose from. By the way, Smartić's setup is missing a monitor and an SSD, so that puts the price at around $900, similar to the others. Man...

The Samsung Hard Drive...
Patriot RAM, DDR3, 1600MHz, 8GB...
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB
The Kingston V300 120GB SSD... a solid little drive...
The AMD FX-Series X8 8320 desktop processor... solid performance for its time.
The ASUS M5A97 Le R2...
The Cooler Master Contact 30 CPU cooler...
Corsair CX500 power supply, 500 Watts...
The XFX AMD Radeon R9 280, featuring that 1000M Boost clock and 3GB of memory... It’s quite a solid card.
The Zalman Z1 mid tower case... a solid choice.

These cards don't have any cooling issues; actually, they're tucked into a great case...

Using a JPMorgan Chase consumer credit line or Diners Club for 36-60 monthly installments...

Or maybe something even more powerful...

2xXFX R9 280x 3GB(CF)

Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB 3.5 Hard Drive
KINGSTON 8GB, 1600MHz RAM

Total: $1,500 USD $239

Free assembly included with the option for 36-60 monthly installments....

On an installment plan, this would be over $83, but look, McLovin put together that build with the R9 290, while I went with this dual-card setup... 😁
It's questionable whether you'll ever truly need all this power, but at least you'll be set for a long time... 🙂

If you don't want to wait on the graphics card, you can grab it over here

or right here

That Fortron unit is plenty since this whole setup pulls a maximum of 270w...
(And that includes everything—the HDD, optical drive, and case fans)

You'll need a SATA3 controller, because Atto is just going to show you the maximum speed possible for SATA2...

Something like this
What should I upgrade? in Desktops ·
Larry Ortiz5 said:I think some registry tweaks might be necessary to boost the speed and fix the PCI ID status. Here’s a screenshot from Atto.

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/397/ssd2j.jpg

Those speeds are way too slow... I honestly have no idea what registry settings would even help. All I did was format the drive and install macOS, and my speeds are totally fine. After downloading the latest firmware, it runs smooth as silk—write: 540, read: 510...
Maybe the bottleneck is actually just bandwidth ☕
What should I upgrade? in Desktops ·
Go ahead and run a benchmark with Atto, then let me know how it goes...
And grab Samsung

Download the OCZ toolbox and check if there are any updates available. The latest version should be 1.15. Samsung is also excellent since it really optimizes performance...

I have Microsoft installed on my laptop and it restarts in about 18 seconds 😲
it could probably go even faster if I optimized it a bit more...

Don't worry about Call of Duty, that won't be the hardest thing you face 😂

Well, that’s certainly a sharp observation...😁

I mean, I’m no expert, but it's alright... though I really wish I could get my hands on a 7950 or a 660ti PE, maybe even something from Microsoft

Now this one is even better

ATI actually fixed their drivers and left NVIDIA in the dust...😁

This card is an absolute beast
What should I upgrade? in Desktops ·
Man, it’s frustrating... you drop $600 on a GPU and still can't crank everything to max... it just has to be that way 🙂😂

Larry Ortiz5 said:I'm running an ASRock board right now, but the issue is I've only got one PCIe slot available.😁

I actually reached out to PC Gamer for some advice. They suggested that upgrading wouldn't yield much of a performance jump, making it pretty much a waste of money unless I just added another 660.

If the experts whose entire job is testing hardware say it isn't worth it, I think I'll take their word for it...😁

There's really no need to upgrade, even if a GTX660 SLI setup is a beast.😉
That Twin Frozr card overclocks beautifully and can handle just about anything...

Max Payne 3 hits 54fps, Crysis runs at 48fps, BF3 gets 51fps—all on Ultra settings. It only struggles a bit with Metro, hitting about 22fps, but once you overclock it, it runs smoothly without any issues...

I’d personally go with the Razer Ouroboros, but if you're dead set on finding something else, there are definitely other options out there...
