The whole backstory behind "Smoke on the Water" is wild, too. So, Frank Zappa was performing at this venue in Montreux, right by Lake Geneva in Switzerland, when some idiot fired a flare mid-set and set the whole building on fire. Zappa starts yelling that the place is burning and everyone needs to get out—but the crowd just stood there thinking he was messing around or making it part of the act! It wasn't until the flames actually swallowed the hall that they realized he wasn't joking, and pretty soon, the whole place was toasted.
The next morning, the guys from Deep Purple—who were also at the festival—were looking out from their hotel window at the smoke from the ruins drifting over the lake like a thick fog. All they had to do was add those legendary chords to that scene...
