briskhound2 said:Seriously, can someone explain why nobody bothers asking for series recommendations on the Series boards?

The people over there have zero credibility, and I simply don't have the patience for these little experiments...

I'm heading off to watch Top of the Lake because I actually trust the Family. That's that...

briskhound2 said:It seems like users are getting worked up just because Harper is in the chat (along with a few others). It has absolutely nothing to do with the actual content, just the users themselves...

And those users complaining about all this only started making noise once a wave of new people arrived who had never even posted here before (myself included). Essentially, the influx of new forum members is what actually caused the chat to descend into such a mess...

You're wrong; it has nothing to do with Harper...

I've been chased away from the movie impression threads by three or four new female users who frantically recount entire plots without a single SPOILER warning, genuinely believing that retelling a story is the same thing as writing a review...

I wasn't feeling Gael García Bernal at all, though... he looks at least five years younger than her in this movie. He looks like he’s barely twenty, even though he's supposed to be a doctor, while she looks like she's in her mid-twenties.

Spoiler alert—it's a shame they didn't show more scenes of them together. They really missed an opportunity to show how happy she actually is when she's with him, what she loves about him, or just the fact that she's head over heels...

My rating: 9/10.

It's an okay little flick if you're just killing time.

Bernal has no idea what he's doing or who he's playing. She completely overshadows him; in her presence, he's like a little toy...
There's no footage of them being happy because the script was weak. The hacks behind the camera just didn't know how to tell a story.
It feels like someone—God or maybe just a director—wanted to hand her a consolation prize before cutting things short too early. There is zero chemistry between them. Nothing at all...

A nine? Please. It's a six, and even that's generous.

You're better off watching My Life Without Me.

Speaking of which, has anyone here actually sat through eXistenZ? I know what kind of filmmaker we're dealing with—Cronenberg definitely has his absolute gems, but he’s also thrown out some pretty mediocre stuff over the years. It seems like people either absolutely despise this movie or they're hailing it as a masterpiece, so I'm wondering... is it actually worth my time?

It’s worth it. Between Videodrome and Shivers, this stands as one of the most powerful pieces Cronenberg has ever done.
You should check out Shivers too.

I have been putting off watching any films by Fatih Akin, saving them all for a later date. I can only hope they offer some sort of pleasant surprise...

Everything from those Dogville films to the Twilight Saga and even Harry Potter...

I’m officially done with anything directed by Shyamalan... even if that means saying goodbye to Will, his son, and those Nike kicks for good. 🙂

Laura Palmer25 said:Do you honestly think my rating of this movie is tied to that spat over Angie? I’ve practically forgotten all about it, let alone the names of the people who were losing their minds attacking her. Yikes.🤣 If you hadn't brought it up, I wouldn't have even remembered your handle. It’s irrelevant. You're really flattering yourself here! My dislike for this flick predates the internet, much less your self-important presence on this forum.😂

The movie targets a specific crowd, just like Bryan Perez50 mentioned. People looking for something to believe in, whom Hollywood occasionally "gifts" an epic-scale film to turn into a "cult classic." For them, anyway. Alien enthusiasts get "Independence Day." Christians get "Passion." Aspiring journalists wanting to expose global conspiracies get "Parallax View." Bored teenagers get "American pie." To make a point: this one is just poorly made and stupid, unlike the ones I listed—especially "Passion," which I actually think is excellent. This one fails because R. Williams overacts so hard he falls into this terrible melodrama, trying to drag the audience down with him ("cry with me/us"). Then there's the schizophrenic, inconsistent plot and those incredibly dumb depictions of hell that clearly took some inspiration from Dante without putting in any actual effort to develop the scenes. It also fails to flesh out the theme regarding the connection between true love and the grave. It’s like an ambitious canvas where someone just splashed some paint and a few outlines on it, then tossed it onto an exhibit. The only decent thing is Annabelle Sciorra's acting.

Honestly, explaining why this sucks feels like explaining why sh*t smells. Pointless.

Never take a personal grievance and turn it into a universal truth. Almost every film has a shitty part, almost every actor is repulsive to someone like you, and plenty of artists "dabble" in Dante...

The theme regarding eternal love and the unbreakable bond between two people is handled decently enough in this film. The acting from the three leads is serviceable.

And yeah, "Passion," much like any other work by Mel Gibson, is miles away from being a good movie.

Much like passion, this film serves its own specific audience—people who simply need it to exist. You don't need to go out of your way to defend it, neonorca4; the movie speaks for itself... It’s a good thing someone finally decided to bring it to the screen, though one really ought to read the Richard Matheson book as well.

Hedonism_Girl said:Has a non-cam version finally leaked? A friend tried watching it a few months back, but they gave up because the picture quality was absolute garbage.

Look, the picture quality is fine enough (it's a BDRip) and Charlize Theron is gorgeous—curves and all—but the movie itself is just bad. It’s the same old tired story, and Jason Reitman follows it like a lost puppy; everything feels formulaic and full of clichés...
I wasn't exactly thrilled with Jennifer's Body, and now, after sitting through Young Adult, I can safely say this one is just plain terrible... 🙏
