How to build up tolerance to low kicks? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
1. Don't let them land that low kick.
2. If you're gonna take one, at least move your leg enough so they aren't hitting you with full power...
3. Absorb the impact...

does anyone know if there are any boxing clubs near those cities?
And I mean actual boxing, not just some other martial arts gym...

Google is your friend.

There used to be a championship club over in Kurşanc—not sure if they're still running, though. Tel: 040/382-002

Just point me in the right direction

Go see Greg ( www.shaolin.com ). Most of the others are just selling junk. Steer clear of Wing Chun and Tai Chi...

Now tell us—you looking for actual combat training, just some recreational fun, esoteric stuff, or you trying to join the cult? That’s what decides which school we point you toward 😉

I honestly think all this "spiritual" stuff in martial arts was just tacked on way after the practical side was already figured out. Like using Mikkyo or Zen as a mental crutch to feel secure or handle fear. Or those Taoist principles in Chinese martial arts—just a way to give boxing some intellectual street cred. Concepts like chi or pneuma are basically just old-school attempts to explain how the body actually works, not an attempt to turn a skill set into a religion. Just because certain systems trigger weird physical sensations—tingling, electric shocks, paralysis, or feeling like someone else is pulling your strings—doesn't mean it’s religious... :P

(The idea that prayer heals people, including those cases of spontaneous recovery, usually boils down to a misdiagnosis rather than an actual miracle.)

Still, there's a reason you can't just slap a scientific label on everything. Maybe we could split it up: "supernatural" being the stuff we can't explain, and "spiritual" being a method for self-improvement?

I'll give you this—fanatical skeptics are just as much of a headache as those chi-huggers.

I feel like this topic hasn't been chewed over on this forum since the day of the CHE meet (legend status)...

The real issue is how traditional martial arts have been watered down. Back in the day, they were developed just like MMA is today—it was survival of the fittest. Whoever came out on top of the most fights earned the right to go to war while everyone else stayed sidelined. A lot of that comes down to culture, too—for example, grappling—specifically ground fighting—was pretty much ignored in China because they saw it as beneath them. Since the way most enthusiasts practice traditional martial arts hasn't actually served a combat purpose in at least a century, you could argue they've become archaic... basically just turned into a form of performance art.

I gotta admit, messing around with different styles has given me some experiences I can't really explain with "science." Does that make me a cultist? 🤷

(And as for all that mysticism stuff, that’s just what people pull when they either don't know what they're actually supposed to be training, or they're just jerking students around.)

How could I forget about Dinko! 🙈 Is he still hanging out in NYC or did he build his own damn arena down south?

Our training sessions include plenty of classic ju-jitsu, but we mix in a lot of other techniques too. I'm not sure if that's going to be an issue for you.

Kuzman teaches Tenjin Shinyo ryu, I think. Honestly, that’s probably the closest thing to "real" traditional ju-jutsu you’ll find unless you have connections or something... 🙂

In the army, it’s mostly just rednecks and uneducated losers—mostly because the drilling business is tied up with organized crime and the bottom of the barrel. You might see a soldier here or there. 😁

Dancing is honestly a huge plus. Doing 5 or 6 minutes of fast jive is way more intense than an entire Taekwondo session :P plus—you actually get some decent leg definition out of it. And let’s be real, knowing how to dance is way more useful in the real world than nailing some perfect kata.

Besides, Freddy's is a solid club—even if I hit up Harmony, so I shouldn't be talking up the competition... 😍 )

Sport karate isn't the traditional stuff... most karate clubs in the States are basically sport-focused anyway, so nothing to sweat there.

As for your question, tell us where you're living so we can figure out what's closest to you...

I've seen it. 😛

And it’s not even a funny question—it’s just some guy trying to bait me into thinking I’m clueless. Now, suddenly, after everything I’ve laid out, he can’t offer an answer beyond "maybe they're in the woods." Seriously, I actually expected him to teach me something since he keeps insisting I don't know squat... 😬 (EDIT: I get it! He's just too high and mighty to show off his knowledge in public. That's gotta be it! 😬)

Happy New Year to you too, Steve 🙂
