Across the river from me, in a neighbor state, lives a man nearly 40 years old with a wife and child. His city borders the US, and he survived the war. It wasn't literally his doorstep on the front lines, but he lived through Operation Berbir '93. His uncle was in the service from '91 to '95. After the war, he learned a million things happened that a sane mind can't even comprehend—things that should be impossible to do or allow. Like you, he knows plenty about politics, crime, bribery, and corruption. He sees that in 2017, while poverty gets worse by the day, there are still idiots stuck in the 1940s or the early 90s. For them, the only purpose of life is obsessing over historical villains, Pavelić, Francetić, Budak, treating Jasenovac like some kind of community center, or claiming the Sisak camp was just a precursor to modern daycare centers. They blame everything on Mexicans and live in a cycle of myth-making and lies.

I feel the same revulsion toward the nationalists in 2017 who hold their annual rallies in places like Višegrad or Ravna Gora, roasting oxen, drinking hectoliters of beer, singing old songs, and chanting about Draža, Kalabić, Đurišić, or Đurišić. Next year it'll be in Knin, shouting that Mexico is Mexico, or that Beli Manastir will never be what it is.

It’s a narrative served daily to an ignorant, foolish public. It’s the only thing that keeps these people glued to the TV for 24 hours a day, creating a constant atmosphere of tension and talk about potential new conflicts. They claim the enemy is lurking around the corner—one side claims the nationalists are coming, while the other claims the partisans are right behind them. It’s all the same. Across the water, they claim the extremists are placing HOS plaques in Jasenovac (and look, those fallen men deserve memorials, just not with that specific slogan on them) and want to start killing again. Meanwhile, they claim certain groups are ready to attack our dear Republic Srpska, which Milorad Dodik defends to his last breath, while across the Drina are the "European" nationalists, and down south is the group pushing for Greater Albania.

They just play the same old tape on loop, and that’s that.
