Accounting for Sole Proprietors: Tax & Bookkeeping Tips in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
It’s certainly possible. I was being a bit naive thinking they might just forget about it for a month. But when you look at any other contribution on your bank statement, it clearly specifies which month the charge is for. With this 8770 entry, however, it just says "annual assessment." Because of that, we don't even have a clue which specific month this is supposed to cover.

The IRS has officially started assessing employment levies for small business owners and independent contractors. Since the first effective date was March 14, 2014, we won't be hit with a double payment for January and February. Instead, they’ve jumped straight into the February assessment, which is due this March.

The notice number is 8770, and the total amount due is $29.

Mine’s been stuck in "pending" for two weeks now... kind of weird, right?

I actually spoke with an agent at the IRS today, and she told me they can't even verify through their system whether a specific filing has been submitted yet. It sounds like their internal software is acting up again. A client of mine came by looking for documentation needed for a government contract bid, and since the agent couldn't see our status on her end, I had to manually email over the confirmation showing we filed everything for January.

I have no idea how 1,458.333333 would ever round up to .34.😕

I'll go ahead and ask him. 🙂
If we're really splitting hairs over pennies here, then 2,916.67 is the mathematically sound figure, since 1,458.33333 multiplied by 2 equals 2,916.66666.
Accounting for Sole Proprietors: Tax & Bookkeeping Tips in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
stormybadger8 said:Why on earth is it 2,916.68?😕

$23333 / 4 (25%) = $5833 per year.
$5833 / 12 (months) = 1,458.33
1,458.33 x 2 = 2,916.66🤷

My calculator keeps spitting out 1,458.34. That’s why. It’s just a rounding difference in the decimals, so I don't think a couple of pennies are going to make much of a difference here. 🤷

You hit the nail on the head, Drew Rogers6... I feel like I’m constantly nitpicking things lately, and honestly, I’d probably just end up getting into a fight if I didn't laugh it off, haha. If I didn't start finding the humor in all this, I’d turn into one of those grumpy old ladies you see working behind the counters at the DMV or local government offices, just glaring at customers with eyes that could freeze water. Seriously, what is happening to us?! 🙂

silverbadger, it’s honestly not funny, though your exaggeration did give me a chuckle because I can never quite wrap my head around how stupid people can be—in this case, specifically when it comes to banking. Even if I read about these types of disasters every single day, I could never get used to how broken this entire system is. And it isn't just the banks; it's everywhere. The IRS has introduced these absolutely pathetic new hurdles. They told us to write to them directly because they shut down their email address, so they want us to post our questions on our own website instead. Fine, no problem, I sent them an inquiry on February 6th, 2014, and I even received an automated email confirmation saying it went through. It’s now February 14th, and I still haven't heard a peep. That’s the state of our "digital" infrastructure for you. All these officials pretend to be tech-savvy, acting like they all have Master’s degrees in Computer Science, yet half the services they offer aren't even supported by the system, or the interface looks like it was designed by a dinosaur. One platform supports Java, but another one doesn't, so you have to jump back to the first one, only to find out there's a third one waiting for you in the meantime. It’s no wonder they think people aren't needed anymore; they assume everything will just be "click, click," and we'll never actually see a human face. Now, I consider myself pretty decent with computers—I'm certainly no IT expert, far from it—but I can hold my own. Still, this is just ridiculous. They claim they're cutting down on bureaucracy, yet my desk is buried under a mountain of printed confirmations, receipts, and "received" notices. I'm literally sorting piles upon piles of things I already sent, which haven't been processed because if I look away for one second, I'll lose my place and forget where I was. At the end of the day, it's all just money, money, money, and nothing else matters, and this whole system is starting to make me sick. I used to love this job so much, but I'm growing more disgusted by it every day—partly because of the systemic failures, and partly because of the people who want to pay peanuts for work they don't even realize requires so much effort in a single month.

Well, now I feel a little better too!

Has anyone here dealt with this personally or perhaps heard of a similar situation? 🤷

If you’ve recently renewed your certification, you actually need to send them an email to let them know. They have to manually update the details on your account profile. When you renew, certain data points change, and if they haven't updated their records, the system gets stuck on your old info. This happened to me back in November—I didn't realize I had to notify them, so I just kept hitting a wall. Once I reached out and they updated my file, everything worked perfectly the very next day.
If that isn't the issue, your best bet is to just give them a call at the number I mentioned earlier.

Your best bet is to call 1-800-555-0199 and press 3. I usually call them right when their servers crash; they're so "helpful" that they probably don't even realize their own systems are down until you point it out, and then they actually start working.

Their servers tend to go down quite frequently. It’s almost like a cycle—someone reports the outage, sometimes I even end up calling them personally to let them know, they report that the server is "down again," and then they finally get it fixed. Honestly, don't let it catch you off guard too much; it's just part of the experience.

Raymond Martinez10 said:How am I supposed to file an electronic pension claim if the employee didn't bring their employment records—which they aren't even required to provide—and I have no way of finding their Social Security number? Furthermore, how am I expected to track down their total years of service for past employment?

The only fix is to tell the worker to show up in person—because around here, sending a proxy just doesn't fly—so they can get their own username and password (assuming they've filled out the request first). Then, either they pull the data themselves or I print out whatever info I need for them.

Is there actually a faster, less painful way to do this? 🤷

Even though those fields still exist in the digital system, you actually don't need to enter the Social Security number to complete the filing on the SSA website. You can just skip over that section entirely.

As for the rest of your question, I completely agree with how we're handling the documentation side of things. It’s like they abolish certain requirements one day, yet the system still demands the exact same data from the employee's files.

I honestly don't know where to start with this one. It’s just one of those situations that makes you want to put your head in your hands and wonder how we got here. You look at the way things are being handled lately, and it feels like common sense has gone out the window entirely. I’ve been sitting here trying to process the latest developments, and frankly, it’s infuriating. It isn't just about one single error; it’s the systemic lack of foresight. We see these patterns repeating, much like when people try to ignore clear warnings from organizations like NOAA, only to act surprised when the storm actually hits. It’s predictable, yet somehow, we still stumble through the dark every single time. And don't even get me started on the bureaucratic red tape. Dealing with institutions that should be providing a safety net—think Medicare or even just a standard Bank of America branch—but instead, they offer nothing but hurdles and delays? It’s exhausting. You expect a certain level of competence, a baseline of functionality, and instead, you get this endless loop of inefficiency. I’m not trying to be cynical, though I realize that might be how it comes across. I am simply being realistic. We deserve better than this constant state of managed chaos. It’s frustrating to watch, especially when the solutions seem so obvious to anyone paying even a modicum of attention. But I suppose that's just the way the wind blows these days, isn't it? kaže:
I decided to take a little peek at my pension fund today—just out of curiosity, really—and I was met with this absolute nonsense telling me that I haven't selected a single certificate. Now, let’s get one thing straight: I am being incredibly diligent here. I use the exact same card for everything—my taxes, the IRS, even my Bank of America account (since they all merged their systems anyway)—yet suddenly, when it comes to this, the system acts like it has never seen my face before. How does it not recognize me? It's completely absurd.

Will we be facing that same old headache again? I’m talking about that inevitable mess where you can't run your tax software, your online banking, and your Medicare or Social Security portals all on the same computer at once. We’ve already dealt with this exact kind of technical nightmare before, and frankly, I'm not looking forward to a repeat performance.

I really hope it doesn't turn out that way. If it does, I’m going to be forced into buying yet another computer, and frankly, my wallet can't handle that kind of nonsense right now. 😬

It’s funny how things work in this country. You’ve got NOAA over here, and they aren't even asking for much—they just go about their business. But then you deal with Medicare, and suddenly everything changes. Apparently, they’re demanding some sort of notarized power of attorney just to get anything done. It’s one of those classic bureaucratic hurdles that feels like they're just making life difficult for the sake of it. 🤷

Medicare & Medicaid Services doesn't ask for anything to be notarized. I handled all of that just a few months ago and everything went smoothly without any unnecessary complications.

The information is spot on. Once you have the cover letter ready, you just draft a power of attorney in Word, get it stamped, and attach the court order (or the business registration documents) along with the official statistics report (the one used for corporate classification). You can just use copies of those documents; there's no need to involve a notary public, and that should wrap everything up.

Nicole Lee6 said:The same deadlines apply to digital services through Medicare, too. The only difference is that while my Social Security will be free, I’ll likely end up paying some ridiculous fee to Medicare just to get anything done.

I haven't really had the chance to dive deep into that yet—I let the whole thing slide right past me back in March—so I have to say, this specific detail about those three employees is really starting to rub me the wrong way.
I’ve got three of them sitting right here now. It’s just perfect—exactly when we start looking to bring someone new onto the team, I’ll be stuck scrambling around trying to track down all those usernames and passwords. Typical. 😢

How exactly do you think they'll charge for Medicare? I've been using both types of online portals—Social Security and health insurance—for a few months now, and I don't pay them anything directly. My FINRA certificate covers their services, so I just get my monthly bill and receipt from FINRA like usual. Aside from that, there aren't any extra fees.

amberdrifter14 said:Are you aware that since January 1st, 2014, the window for registering or deregistering employees with Medicare is limited to just 24 hours?

I found the news quite startling... :-O

It shocked me too, so I was frantically trying to handle all those registrations and terminations from December 31st, 2013, on January 2nd. Of course, nobody made a big deal out of it beforehand; it was mentioned as a possibility a few months ago and then nothing. There was no warning online, no official notice in December, and nothing over the phone because everyone was just blindsided. However, if you look at their website—specifically regarding pension filings—they explained that they were giving a three-month grace period (just like Nicole Lee6 mentioned) for anyone with more than three employees to get organized, secure their digital certificates for the e-pension system, and transition everything to the online portal.

I actually went through this process using their instructions just two weeks ago, and everything went smoothly. You just have to follow the steps carefully.

To whom it may concern,

we are writing to notify you that the validity of your digital certificates

xy

on your IRS electronic ID card / USB token is set to expire on December 20, 2013. After that date, you will no longer be able to utilize these certificates. To ensure uninterrupted service, we kindly request that you renew them.

If your information required for certificate issuance remains unchanged, you can complete the renewal yourself via the website

by logging in with your current valid certificate; there is no need to visit the IRS office in person. Please make sure to complete this at least one day before expiration to prevent any lapse in service.

Please note that if the certificate expires, remote renewal will no longer be an option!

Additional requirements for remote renewal:

In order to access the online renewal portal, your computer must have the following installed:

- ActivClient 6.x

- Java 1.6x or higher

- Microsoft in the system directory

Everything necessary can be downloaded from the installation package located at this link:

Detailed instructions for the remote renewal process can be found on the website .

If you prefer, you may still renew your certificates in person at the IRS. To proceed with an in-person renewal, please fill out and notarize the appropriate Business Certificate Issuance Request, which is available at and can be mailed or delivered personally to:

An LLC can't just go into "hibernation" mode. You still have to file all your paperwork, even if you're reporting zero activity for the period. You also need to wrap up your final tax filings and submit them properly. Essentially, the compliance requirements stay exactly the same as when you're fully operational. If things aren't too messy financially, I’d suggest looking into selling the company instead.
