I thought I might try to breathe some life back into this group by bringing up a classic. I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks about Surf rock lately—it feels like this particular track still sounds incredibly fresh, even though it actually dates all the way back to 1962, I suppose.

Catholic Church in Wisconsin bans Mass at Wounded Knee in Close to Politics ·
David Vaughn75 said:The Church in Wisconsin just banned the mass in Wounded Knee. They shut down the request from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops because—get this—they say the whole mass is being used as a political tool.

WASHINGTON, D.C./VIENNA - The Catholic Church in Wisconsin turned down the plea from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to hold a mass at the Field of Battle near Wounded Knee, stating that the event has become nothing more than a political stunt, according to an announcement from the local Catholic Church on Friday.

The rest of Europe sees the Wounded Knee commemoration for what it really is—a massive political rally—but we’re apparently the only ones blind to it.
Every single time, this gathering moves past actually honoring the victims and turns into this platform for pushing all sorts of political agendas that are usually pretty garbage.

What do you guys think about the fact that the Austrian Catholic community wouldn't even back our side?
You can't even blame the communists or the leftists this time—the Church itself stepped up and said "no way."

Well, Austria—or rather, its Catholic Church—is a sovereign entity, and they make their decisions based on the regulations that govern their own territory.

Regardless of how you categorize them, I always thought they were absolutely brilliant... tracks like Looking for a Kiss and Jet Boy are absolute classics.

I suppose one could argue that Glam rock is more about the overall fashion style and visual presentation—which is certainly evident with them—rather than being a specific musical genre in itself; even Wikipedia mentions that they are classified as a glam punk group alongside various other rock styles.

Personally, I've always been a fan, and I find that their sound constantly reminds me of the Ramones.

Charles Ramos4 said:I suppose I don't have any real quarrel with your perspective, though I can't help but feel you might be making a bit of an error right from the jump by trying to categorize or rank Glam rock bands based solely on their sound. It feels a little like if we were deciding whether to classify certain bands as metal strictly based on how long the members' hair was. 😁 I’d argue that it's really the fashion style, rather than the actual sonic profile, that defines whether someone belongs to the Glam rock movement—just as sound defines metal, not the length of one's hair or their choice of clothes.

If the way these artists dressed wasn't the very foundation of Glam rock, I doubt performers like >, >, >, or > would ever even be mentioned in the same breath.

I mean, I guess that’s true, although when the term Glam rock comes up, my mind immediately jumps to >, >, and >, especially when I think about songs like >.

Patrick Martin said:to reiterate, if we are looking strictly at the musicality, those acts I mentioned possess that particular "candy" sound—which I suppose is this peculiar fusion of rock and bubblegum pop. In my view, those two qualities define them musically.

So, you have Sweet and Slade right at the forefront, whereas T. Rex feels more like a sort of rock, funky, sexy guru band to me.

The others (Bowie, Roxy Music, Queen, etc.) are certainly unique, but they don't quite strike me as the true archetypes,

but hey, that's just how I see it.

Regarding T. Rex, people claim Marc Bolan is the father of Glam rock, but personally, I feel T. Rex, Sweet, and Slade occupy a similar space; still, I'd say blockbuster by Sweet is the ultimate Glam rock anthem.

I was just browsing Wikipedia, and it mentions that Abbe, Queen, KISS, and the like are also categorized as Glam rock groups, though I don't really perceive them that way myself.

Technically, it’s his song, but I suppose we’re really here to discuss them as a group and the whole Glam rock movement, aren't we? Even The Beatles didn't write every single track they released under their own name, though, I guess, you have to look at who is actually credited as the songwriter.

I suppose one might consider "All The Young Dudes," that quintessential anthem penned by David Bowie, to be a fascinating piece of history, especially since it was originally captured and launched as a single by Mott the Hoople back in 1972.

Charles Ramos4 said:I suppose both bands are truly top-tier, though I might lean slightly toward T. Rex just because they felt a bit more unique and distinctive compared to their peers. I haven't spent quite as much time diving into Slade, I guess, perhaps because their sound feels somewhat more conventional, so they didn't grab my attention quite as intensely. They actually remind me quite a bit of one of my own favorites, Status Quo.
As far as their tracks go—aside from their massive hit "Cum on Feel the Noize," which was famously covered by Quiet Riot—I’d say these two really stand out

Well, yes, but Slade managed to hit USA No1, while T. Rex had four, and Sweet had three, even if Sweet was probably more popular around here. As for Marc Bolan, people often call him the father of Glam rock, though tragically he passed away in a car accident back in 1977. I actually caught a Status Quo concert sometime around '77 or '78.

I’ve previously shared some tracks from T. Rex and Slade here, though I don't believe anyone has offered any commentary on them yet. Regarding Marc Bolan—it’s often suggested that he is essentially the father of Glam rock—but I suppose I wonder what your collective thoughts are on these artists? Which of their songs tend to resonate most with you?

Charles Ramos4 said:I realize the name is more about the aesthetic than the actual sound, which is why I’m bringing up Queen and the rest, since they seem to fit perfectly here. That's actually why I find it a bit odd that you mentioned Suzy Quatro; from what I've gathered watching some of her clips on YouTube, she didn't really give me that specific impression. 😁

You make a fair point, I suppose; her style leaned a bit more toward that classic rock look—you know, the black leather pants and jackets—but personally, I’ve always sort of categorized her as a Glam rock singer.

Charles Ramos4 said:Wouldn't you say Queen—and maybe even Kiss or Bon Jovi—were also lumped in with the glam rock bands? I think I remember seeing that somewhere.

Generally speaking, if we're discussing this specific genre, those bolded names would probably be my top picks for favorite bands, whereas I'd view Bowie more as a solo artist. Though, I suppose I have a soft spot for Suzy Quatro too (I actually had no idea she was considered part of the glam rock scene), and I'm sure the others have some great tracks, but I haven't delved deeply enough into their discographies to really comment on them. 🙂

Well, I suppose you have a point there, though I’ve always felt Queen leans more toward hard rock. To me, Glam rock is less about being a distinct genre of Rock music and more about a certain flamboyant styling. Back in the 70s, I spent quite a bit of time listening to Sweet, Slade, T. Rex, and Suzy Quatro. It’s actually pretty interesting to think about how a Glam rock group like Slade would have performed back in the States during that era.

granitecanyon71 said:I suppose my very first purchase was actually that double compilation featuring Sweet and their track Strung Up. I absolutely adored them back then. Honestly, they even held up quite well once they started writing their own material.
I seem to recall being in school, working on some sort of art project—drawing a poster or something along those lines—and I ended up using the inner sleeve of that double album as inspiration, trying to sketch those figures that look like little puppets on strings. It turned out to be an absolute disaster, if I'm being honest. 😁

The true father figure of Glam rock was really Marc Bolan and his band T. Rex, though tragically he passed away in a car accident around '77, leaving behind a whole era defined by bands like Sweet, Slade, Suzy Quatro, Gary Glitter, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, and Alice Cooper.

Alexander Williams512 said:I somewhat agree with you

I suppose one might argue that the term "glam" is being used more as a chronological marker rather than a strictly defined genre these days...
Mind you, I can't deny that almost everyone involved was contributing to some sort of rock and roll revival, and you certainly have those subcultural elements creeping in—things like a fresh take on sexuality, the specific fashion choices, and all that heavy makeup. 😁

In my view, Glam rock is really more about the aesthetic than anything else; it's primarily about styling. Just think about how The Beatles looked in their black and white era, and then contrast that with a band like Sweet, who were such a quintessential Glam rock outfit from the 70s.

If you watch this video, I think it illustrates exactly what Glam rock is all about.

Regarding the groups Sweet/Slade and the whole Glam Rock movement, I suppose one could argue that Glam Rock is more about the overall aesthetic and various subgenres of rock music rather than a single sound; you can really tell just by looking at how they dressed:

Larry Walker24 said:A few days back, Bloomberg reported that the economic boom in Sweden has triggered a massive labor shortage across the country. Even though Sweden has seen record-breaking numbers of immigrants arriving over the last three years, finding workers is getting tougher by the day. According to a survey from the Swedish Entrepreneurs Confederation back in June—which represents about 60,000 companies—over 75 percent of businesses are struggling to staff up.

Looking at the employment agency's data, 12 out of 15 sectors are dealing with workforce shortages, and the ratio of job openings per person is at its highest point in 17 years. The biggest gaps are in construction, followed by education, then IT, healthcare, and science...

Back in August, there were as many as 78,000 open positions in Sweden, which is a nine percent jump compared to last year.

Bloomberg also points out that while there are still more than 300,000 unemployed people in Sweden, the unemployment rate is sitting at 3.9 percent—the lowest it's been since 2008.

A few months ago, the Swedish employment agency announced plans to create 149,000 new jobs throughout 2017 and 2018, predicting that eight out of ten of those roles will be filled by foreigners.

Even if a construction worker earns a decent $8333 wage, the reality is that a $10,000 apartment with utilities in New York City would leave him with barely $5000 left for expenses, especially since prices there are about 10% higher than what we deal with here.

How much longer will the European Union tolerate this? We need to say no to Sharia law and kick Sweden out of the EU. ☕
All jokes aside, didn't they cause such a massive stir in Brussels over that gathering in Poland with all those flags?

I suppose the real question is who actually threw them—was it a Swede or some Muslim immigrant? I personally have four family members living over there, and honestly, they aren't complaining much. It feels to me like what you're writing is just a way to justify local populism; we always act like everyone is picking on us, yet somehow we assume the Swedes are exempt from criticism.
Why are capitalists so afraid of worker cooperatives? in Close to Politics ·
rowdylynx98 said:Capitalists are obsessed with protecting their precious private enterprises—they absolutely refuse to hand the keys over to some uneducated, red-flag-waving revolutionaries. They probably think they’re just inherently smarter and more capable at running a factory because they managed to claw their way to the top through sheer grit and intellect, while everyone else is stuck being "just" a worker.

In our neck of the woods, capitalists essentially seized control of companies that were originally built by the laborers during the socialist era, all through a uniquely American style of "privatization" carried out by political cronies, relatives, and various other party loyalists.
