Finally managed to get a look at what the lap timing looks like. It could get pretty messy in those opening laps; honestly, everything about this setup screams potential retirements...
Hopefully, they can actually manage to get past Heidfeld this time 😁

I’m not sure if anyone else caught it, but the second Formula E race took place this morning over in Malaysia.
After that ten-week hiatus, the second round actually lived up to the hype for me. Plenty of solid moves out there, though we certainly saw our fair share of contact on track as well.
As for the results, I’m going to hold off on mentioning them for now so I don't spoil anything for those of you planning to watch later.

One more update from this race: it looks like future broadcasts might be available on Arena. I haven't checked yet to see who they have doing the commentary or what the overall production quality looks like, but personally, I'll be sticking with the crew over at NBC.

You hit the nail on the head, Joe. Looking at that clip alongside the image you posted with that yellow sector highlighted, it’s pretty obvious that Bianchi hit a patch of aquaplaning right in the dead center of that zone. After that, he was essentially just a passenger for those few seconds while sliding through the gravel before finally hitting the excavator.
In a scenario like this, brakes are completely irrelevant—it doesn't matter if they can drop a car from 180 mph to 40 mph in a heartbeat.

Exactly. He skidded through the gravel, and what’s even worse is that transition from the gravel back onto the paved access road; it practically launched him straight into the excavator...



This is the split second before impact. You can see him transitioning from the gravel to the pavement, and the front end is completely airborne. That effectively killed any chance of him correcting his course...

Bianchi has suffered internal cranial bleeding and has been put on life support. There's a possibility he'll need to go back into surgery.

Things have taken a turn for the worse. Like some people already pointed out, that first night is always the hardest. Fight this one, Bianchi, 🙂

There was even footage of a helicopter taking off, but honestly, what kind of shape was that thing actually in? Was it even outfitted to transport someone in that condition? I mean, obviously, a chopper is faster, but there’s got to be some logical explanation for why they didn't just use it immediately...

I'm seeing reports on X that the police arrived at the track and seized whatever was left of the car. To be blunt, I think we've seen enough. This whole thing feels like a closed case at this point; too much time has slipped by without any actual, concrete information being released.

Not a bad race overall, just desperately missing the engine noise and maybe some better production from FOM. The car swaps are kind of ridiculous, but apparently necessary. Still, it's nice seeing all these Formula 1 retirees—both drivers and crew—back on the grid. Though, if I'm being honest, this whole circus feels like it's lacking pace... everything just seems a bit slow to me... 😁

Just to touch on that last point about speed.
Add more speed to the mix and we'll end up with the exact same crap we have in Formula 1. More speed means demanding better aerodynamics, and in a series dominated by street circuits like this, that just means fewer of those wheel-to-wheel duels we saw today where cars were fighting for grip through the corners...

Speaking of aerodynamics, I don't know if it's just me, but I felt like Prost's e-dam had significantly "more" rear wing than the rest of the field. Given how he drove—setting aside the final lap—he didn't seem any slower on the straights.
Also, these mandatory pit stops leave massive amounts of room for tactical maneuvering.
You pull one driver in an extra lap early to aim for a release right ahead of a rival, then hold them up during their exit while the other car puts in faster laps. I think we might see some interesting "tactics" regarding pit windows throughout the season.

The only downside is having to wait two months for the next race.

Honestly, if you ask me, this is way worse than that disaster Grosjean and Hamilton caused at the Belgian GP...
Because there's zero doubt here about intention or who did what... it's crystal clear that Prost did this on purpose.

P.S. Quick Nick is a total wimp... I half expected him to slap the kid, but nope, nothing.

I’m with Joe on this one; everyone has become way too obsessed with being "good" and "moral" in racing.
The whole uproar over this is just because of the end result, which was Heidfeld flying into the barrier.
If it weren't for those sausage kerbs (which are a complete nuisance and I don't know why they even bother using them when there are better ways to handle this), this would have ended with nothing more than broken suspension.
As it stands, it looked pretty horrific and dangerous, though looking at the footage, the main chassis is practically untouched while the safety components did their job and stopped the car.

Here is what Nick Heidfeld said:

Things happen. Prost made a mistake, and I don't think anyone is actually disputing that, but people are sensationalizing it for all the wrong reasons.
If you watch the video, Prost clearly looks to the right, sees nobody is there, and then swerves left; he simply executed the move to close the line too late.
I personally don't see any need for a ban, but we'll see how it plays out...
