IDE mode isn't working, but IEEE works fine in Hardware ·
No, no—I’ve been digging into the ISO files and finally wrapped my head around it, but honestly? It just doesn't seem worth the hassle at this point...

Now I'm just brainstorming a better way to handle things down the road—something like being able to bridge an HDD from a second computer to my main rig, just so I can run those drive tests more easily.😕

For now, I've loaded a hard drive regenerator boot CD onto the machine and started the diagnostic process.
IDE mode isn't working, but IEEE works fine in Hardware ·
Hey everyone,

So, I was trying to plug in an old hard drive just to run some tests on it, but my recovery software is throwing a fit—it’s telling me I need to switch my BIOS setting to IDE mode because it can't function while I'm on AHCI mode.
The problem is, once I jump into the BIOS and toggle it over to IDE, the system starts loading macOS, then just hits a loop where it restarts right before the OS fully boots—it just keeps looping endlessly.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this kind of conflict?

Thanks,

Alexander Moore67 said:Go with the second option—that Abit board is notoriously unreliable.

Hmm, I'm not quite sure why you'd say it's so unreliable—I've actually been running an ax78 for five years now, and honestly, it’s been a fantastic board for overclocking. It’s a phenomenal piece of hardware; it even features a nice little onboard display that boots up all the components before hitting the FF stage and starting the PC. If a component is acting up, it tells you exactly what the issue is so you can swap it out... plus, having that BIOS reset button right on the back is such a convenient touch.

It really is an excellent motherboard, though unfortunately, they don't make them anymore. 😢

Thanks, I appreciate it. I think I'm aware of that too, but things don't always turn out quite as planned...

But it doesn't really matter—I put in the work today and translated every single word I didn't recognize, which actually helped me pick up a little more English in the process.😁

Thanks so much—by any chance, do you know of an American or perhaps a German website that offers a detailed explanation? I'm still working on getting my English up to speed...

Thanks

Hey everyone!

As the title suggests, I’m looking into picking up a projector for my home setup—mostly for movie nights—and I was wondering what I should actually be looking out for? What are the real deal-breakers when you're shopping for a projector?

Thanks!
Dell, Intel, and AMD posters... in Hardware ·
Well, Kyle Martin67 asked me the same thing. I didn't bother asking anyone else, but since I was feeling pretty ambitious about it—I actually gave a buddy of mine who does posters and large-scale decals a call. I treated him to a few beers, and in exchange, he whipped up five laminated A1-sized stickers for me. 🙂
DVD drive issues in Hardware ·
It’s most likely just a scratched DVD—honestly, you’d be better off just picking up a new one for $33 and calling it a day 🙂

I reached out to the local service center, but I haven't heard a peep—nothing. I even sent follow-up emails to Dell, AMD, and a few other companies, yet I'm still met with total silence...

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could ask for a bit of advice?
A friend and I launched our PC repair shop about two years ago, and we’ve just moved into a new storefront. We really want to spruce up the walls with some promotional posters—you know, branding for companies like Intel, AMD, Dell, Cooler Master, or EVGA—to give the place a more professional look.

Does anyone happen to know where we might be able to buy or source these kinds of things?

I’ve been scouring eBay and various niche websites for the last couple of days, but I haven't had much luck so far...

Well, I've still got about two months to go before I pull the trigger on a new rig...

I could probably sell my current setup for roughly $833, toss in another $1000, and then I’d have about $1833 to build a completely new PC from scratch...

Alright, thanks everyone....

2300-$833 🙂

In total, I ended up paying about $2000 😢

By the way—the motherboard is an AM2+/AM2—and while it might be getting a bit old, it’s actually a really solid board...

It’s got that built-in display, which is great because if anything goes wrong, it just tells me exactly what's happening right there on the screen and that's that.🙂

Hey everyone, I was hoping someone could give me an honest appraisal of my current rig:

Case: NZXT Guardian 921
Control Panel: NZXT Sentry 2 fan panel (includes alarms and auto fan optimization)
Fans: NZXT setup—four 120mm fans all synced to the panel
PSU: Chieftec 650 W modular power supply
CPU: Phenom 9850 4 x2 at 2.5 GHz
CPU Cooler: Thermaltek Big Typhoon
RAM: 4x1 Corsair Dominator 1066 MHz DDR2
GPU: Asus ATI radeon 4870 512 ddr5
Motherboard: Abit AX78 (honestly, a fantastic board)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2
DVD/RW: Samsung

I'm actually looking to sell this PC to a friend—so, what kind of price range should I be aiming for?
Help picking out a new printer in Computer Peripherals ·
That’s definitely a solid solution, but here’s the catch—I’ve already ordered a massive stack of those cardboard "cards"—you know, the membership IDs and registration slips.
So now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to actually print onto them.
Since I can manage it on my old printer, I know it’s technically possible—I just need to find a setup that would allow my client to handle it themselves without a headache.

I did consider taping the cards onto an A4 sheet, but there's a snag: most printers check the paper size the moment they grab it, right before the ink even hits the page.
In theory, if I could somehow secure my "card" to the top right corner of an A4 sheet and feed the whole thing through, I might be able to trick the machine into printing everything perfectly.
But let's be real—when you're dealing with fifty IDs a day, that kind of workaround isn't sustainable.

Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m running into a frustrating issue with my HP Photosmart 4480. Basically, I have a specific ID card template—I scanned the original and built a Word document to fill out the details—but I can't get it to print correctly.
The headache started right after I picked up this printer. Every time I try to print the ID (which should be roughly 3.8" x 5.6"), the printer throws an error saying the paper size is wrong because it seems stuck on its own preset standards.
I’ve tried everything in Microsoft Word—tweaking every possible setting and even creating a fully custom layout down to the exact millimeter—but nothing works. It just refuses to cooperate.
What’s really annoying is that my old printer (an HP PSC 1110) handles this perfectly without any drama. This leads me to believe the problem lies entirely within this new machine; it’s being far too "smart" for its own good by rejecting the dimensions and blocking the print job entirely!
I’ve been scouring various tech forums for days now with zero luck. Honestly, I’m at the point where I’d buy a completely different printer just to get this job done. Does anyone have a recommendation for a simple, no-frills printer—something that won't try to overthink things or complicate a basic task?

Thanks!

Sure, thanks—though honestly, comparing an HD 6970 to a GeForce 550 ti is a bit like apples to oranges, isn't it?
The bottom line for me is that I really need to check in with my buddy first—he needs to decide if he’d rather have raw speed or if he wants something a bit slower, but with much better image quality.

Benjamin King2 said:I mean, why would you even need a powerful card just for Photoshop? 😕

Well, it isn't strictly for Photoshop—he'll be using it for gaming too—so I'm really just trying to figure out which one to pick that offers a decent step up from what he's running now. Honestly, I'm mostly asking on behalf of a friend; I have no idea why they're so insistent on it, but they just want something more capable than their current setup, ideally around the $333 mark.

Benjamin King2 said:Just grab something like this—there's really no need to go for a more powerful or expensive card, especially since you've got 2 DVI outputs and an HDMI port available:

But based on this comparison, it looks like that one is actually weaker than mine

Hey everyone, I'm looking to pick up a new graphics card.
I need a PCI-E card with a budget of around $333, and my goal is to run a multi-monitor setup—specifically two monitors (one 17" and one 19") plus a TV...
For context, most of my work involves using Photoshop...

Here is what I'm running currently:
MSI K9 N4 Ultra
Blue Star II 400W
4 GB DDR2 800 MHz
Nvidia 8800 gts 640 mb

That’s pretty much everything—thanks in advance for the help!

It doesn't matter which retailer I use, as long as they ship via USPS since I'm located out on an island off the coast of California.🙂
We’re just going to use Linux and call it a day. 🙂

And, of course, we'll stick to open-source software.
