+ Paul Munuti and Al Pacino were both in their early 40s when they filmed their versions of Scarface, and Javier is right at that same age. 🙂

It’s much the same situation with that character from the 1932 version of Scarface. Sure, Tony Camonte wasn't a real person, but the film captured the essence of the Prohibition era perfectly. It’s reminiscent of how De Palma took his version of Tony, dropped him right into the middle of Miami, and absolutely fueled him with cocaine. 😁

How much can I actually gather about this potential remake? If they even go through with it, I doubt we’re looking at a strict, frame-for-frame recreation. Word is the protagonist might be a Mexican immigrant this time around. That changes the math entirely. It means that instead of following the tracks through Chicago and Miami, the whole story will likely shift to Los Angeles. A new setting, a different backdrop, and a whole new set of possibilities—perhaps involving the most brutal Mexican cartel we've ever seen on screen. Could it be a disaster? Sure. Could it actually work? Maybe. They might just completely blow it from start to finish. But honestly, who cares? It's their money they're throwing at the screen, and we have the luxury of choosing whether or not to watch.

I’m not sure how many people actually know this, but after the remake of Scarface, De Palma was actually nominated for a Golden Raspberry as the worst director. 😁
It seems there were plenty of critics who couldn't stomach this more violent iteration of the character—especially Al Pacino’s Cuban accent, which became such a massive target for ridicule. For us over here in the States, it wasn't much of an issue, but for people constantly rubbing shoulders with the Cuban community, it hit differently.

Personally, I think De Palma's Scarface is a brilliant film and a total cult classic, but the remake itself isn't flawless, nor is it some untouchable "sacred cow." So, why should anyone see a problem with reimagining the character in a modern setting?

Back in 1932, during the era of Al Capone, Scarface was portrayed as an Italian immigrant settling into Chicago.
Fast forward to 1983, during the cocaine explosion in Miami, where it makes much more sense to depict him as a Cuban immigrant making his way along the Florida coast.
I recall reading somewhere that in a new version, the character might have Mexican heritage instead, which would once again reflect the current reality and the dominance of Mexican cartels in the drug trade.

Godfrey Ho and Richard Harrison — If you go by what Wikipedia claims, Harrison showed up in about 19 of those recycled ninja spectacles directed by Godfrey Ho. I’m not entirely sure if this fits the thread's logic, though. Word is, Ho would only actually film scenes with Harrison twice, then just chop and stitch the footage together into 19 different movies without him ever knowing. Is that why his character always goes by "Gordon" in these things? 😁

California Dreamin (2007) was the last foreign production I sat down to watch... quite entertaining, actually. It’s a bit heavy on the mind, though, knowing that the director, Cristian Nemescu, passed away in a car accident while still stuck in the middle of post-production. A tragic end for such talent. Still, the film managed to sweep the Grand Jury Prize
