But if we’re actually looking at the lineup coming out of Seattle back then, they definitely fall short in terms of pure quality compared to Soundgarden, and honestly, even Alice in Chains. To me, Soundgarden was hands down the heaviest, most powerhouse rock band of that era; Pearl Jam and Nirvana were just sort of hovering somewhere in their shadow. As for this documentary? It’s nothing but pure propaganda for Courtney Love. The whole thing just spends its entire runtime glazing her, it's honestly nauseating. She was just a typical addict and a street walker—and look, she wasn't even cheating on Kurt Cobain, but the guy took his own life because of everything else. The second I realized Dave Grohl wasn't featured in this, I knew exactly what I was getting into, because everyone knows where he stands on Courtney Love. This whole thing is just pathetic.

She definitely cheated on him... she was a beast. That's why he did it.

I listened to them constantly back in high school, but honestly, those lyrics just don't hit the same way anymore. It’s not even that the music is bad, per se—it’s just the kind of stuff that resonates during one very specific window of your life. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Kurt Cobain had actually lived... maybe his sound would have evolved along with him, instead of feeling a bit infantile to anyone who's long since moved past their teenage years.

For kids, it's all about the beat. Hardly anyone actually listens to the lyrics, so...

Most people I know don't even realize what a song is actually about; they just hear it and say, "That's a great track," or memorize the music video. It's like why country music is so massive in the South... it's just that kind of mindset.

I mean, seriously, how many of these are there now?

Man... there have been much worse than him.

I think my previous post got wiped out where I mentioned how they pulled from Killing Joke in the eighties for "Come As You Are"—which, honestly, feels like a pretty mediocre teenage track to me. And as for calling Bowie's original version worse than Kurt Cobain's cover? I don't even know how to respond to that. It just doesn't make sense.

Buzz said everything about the documentary, and I guess he's right. I don't doubt it'll get decent views. I watched it myself—nothing groundbreaking, really. Maybe a little fun here and there, but that's about it.

The movie is fine if you're a die-hard fan... it's got plenty of holes, but it works...

briskbison55 said:you clearly don't know anything about music, especially since your avatar features a band that's musically superior and way more relevant than Nirvana. Putting the Sex Pistols and the Ramones in the same conversation is practically blasphemy; the Pistols are more like Nirvana—overhyped without much substance—whereas the actual geniuses barely saw 2% of the profits from their albums or tours. Cobain was always 'borrowing' from other people's sounds and he never even tried to hide it; he was an entertainer, sure, but maybe not a true genius.

The whole idea that you can take something and make it even better than the original... isn't that kind of genius? Just look at "Man Who Sold the World."

And honestly, it’s not worth getting a warning over. Everyone has their own taste, right? There's no point arguing about it.

goldendrifter19 said:Sometimes I wonder—if he’d actually made it—what he would look like today and how his sound would have evolved? Would he have moved away from the grunge aesthetic entirely, or just turned into some caricature like Ozzy Osbourne, filming reality shows with his wife and daughter? It’s a damn shame... he died right at his creative peak—he could have easily dropped more great albums, whether with Nirvana or as a solo act.

The documentary is way too long and feels pretty one-sided. Does anyone know why Dave Grohl didn't take part in the filming?

If you look on YouTube, there's an explanation for why he wasn't in the doc. To put it simply, he just can't stand Courtney and the kid. This documentary wasn't made out of respect; it was made for the money.

I don't think Kurt would have ever walked away from the needle. His songs suggest he wanted to be alone in this world. He just didn't love anyone—that was just his personality.

Whatever anyone else thinks about them... even as my taste evolves or I try out different genres over the years, I guess Nirvana will always be my absolute favorite band.

I'm with you on that. 😁

It really would have been cool if 🙂

placidtrucker4 said:You're talking nonsense. I guess Kurt was a likable guy, but I'd argue nirvana was more of a cultural phenomenon than anything strictly falling under the category of genius music. Besides, you can love music as much as you want, but I don't think that necessarily makes you a better musician than someone who puts their family and friends before everything else. At the end of the day, it comes down to talent, the ability to express oneself, and hard work.

By the time they arrived, nirvana was already firmly in the MTV era, which doesn't automatically make their music bad, but I suppose it was much easier for them to get any kind of promotion compared to bands that started back in the seventies. You have to consider that nirvana emerged at a time when most of the mainstream audience was practically begging for something "new," and they just happened to fit the bill perfectly. In my view, the vast majority of people responsible for nirvana's success aren't really connoisseurs of fine music; they're more like the late 80s/early 90s equivalent of teenage girls screaming for the Beatles. In other words, the general public's sentiment and the market demand essentially required something like nirvana to exist. As I mentioned before, it feels more like a cultural phenomenon than a display of truly brilliant music.

If we were to compare the actual amount of QUALITY material this band produced against the sheer volume of various idiotic releases, TV specials, and now even the recent documentaries they've sold off, they seem much more like a commercial product than a musical entity. Of course, I suppose that has nothing to do with Kurt himself, since others exploited his image and his work—and his music—following his death.

I really don't see nirvana as being serious pioneers of anything, and I guess comparing a band for whom everything was perfectly laid out—with a market practically crying out for something of that nature—to bands like AC/DC is just pointless. Back in the seventies, people had to spend years playing in tiny clubs, working side jobs, constantly changing lineups, and slowly grinding their way up just to succeed (which, in other words, meant you actually had to possess quality for the audience to notice you, rather than just relying on a wow Effect). Ultimately, I feel that discussing nirvana's legacy and trying to compare them to legitimate legends of MUSIC is somewhat tragicomic.

Jason Fowler57 said:Nirvana is an incredible band.

The editing on this movie is absolute garbage. It’s like you’re watching some kid’s home movie about his own parents, just a bunch of uncurated hunting stories thrown together.

And honestly, ending a film about Kurt Cobain by focusing on his death is just lazy and stupid. As an idea and a cultural icon, Kurt transcended being just some guy struggling with addiction, so why end it there? Nirvana and Kurt are bigger now than they ever were, and they were actually bigger back in '97 than they were in '94.

The animation is probably the only cool part.

😁 I agree... especially since it was made by the two most influential people in his life...

He said it himself... he felt like people were waiting for him to die just so he could finally become a legend through some classic rock tragedy. 😁

Regarding his body—I don't hold his drug use against him. No one can tell me drugs are good; we all know they aren't. But I experience musicians through their music. In my private life, I think I’d find most musicians pretty hard to be around.

...obviously, if you read the post, you read it...

I tried my best not to sound pathetic here,

But seriously, the movie itself isn't bad; it doesn't go too hard on Kurt.

The catch? The film was produced by his daughter, who isn't even a fan of nirvana—she listens to Pepper and that kind of stuff.

Second point: Courtney definitely didn't love Kurt. They were likely together just because they shared certain traits. Man, she was probably the only person back then crazier than he was. He wasn't into typical people, and he certainly wasn't a typical guy himself.

Her acting all naive in the film is transparent...

A few months after Kurt passed away, Tom Grant released those audio recordings of conversations between her and Courtney, where she basically said at least now the albums would sell. That's it.

Courtney is a manipulator and a liar, which clearly didn't bother her at the time.

Kurt says everything in his songs. Right before he died, you can feel that Courtney was cheating on him. He wasn't happy. He didn't view infidelity as just a physical act; to him, it was betrayal. We're talking about a man who was incredibly emotional.

Bottom line: Courtney is living the life, with access to every drug imaginable alongside her daughter.
She's actually benefiting more from Kurt now that he's gone. Unfortunately, she maintains strict control over his catalog and his legacy... which makes sense, since that's how she makes her living.

We'll probably never know the real truth about Kurt... all we know is that he was a legend.

Just finished watching this documentary... what can I even say? It hits you hard. You feel everything—the fear, the demon, the sorrow. It’s raw, and any true nirvana fan will tell you that. Nothing was sugarcoated or twisted...

The legend lived. Now, I know plenty of people will jump in to comment about his addiction or whatever else...
But he was just such an honest, unassuming guy...

His songs are absolute perfection, though I suppose anyone who truly understands them isn't exactly having the easiest time in life...

As long as people keep listening to his music and talking about him, he stays alive. He'll live on in our hearts forever...

Thank you for sharing so much of yourself through your music...
In my opinion, the worst part was...

I thought the first movie was perfect—it felt fresh, even if it was a little predictable...

As for Peeta, he comes off as a bit of a villain. It would have made more sense if she actually went after him...

Woody Harrelson is an incredible actor... overall, the story holds up, but the film itself is missing something...
silvergardener6 said:It really ought to be. I mean, The Hunger Games is arguably the best film franchise of its kind right now, and I think it’s a significant plus that you can see reflections of today's global political climate within the story.

Maybe try plugging the PC into a second monitor just to be safe? It’s probably a graphics card issue. Check Craigslist; you can probably snag something for less than $33 if it's just a gift for your dad. Honestly, whatever you pick up will probably be more than enough for him. Just make sure you double-check the slot—you'll need to know if it's AGP or PCI-E.
