Are lefties actually smarter?

Back in school, they actually forced me to write with my right hand, even though I started first grade already being able to write just fine.
It was such a huge struggle for me, because when I wrote with my left hand, my letters were neat and correct, but once I switched to my right, everything became a mess.
Since things like handwriting and drawing get graded so heavily in first grade—unlike, say, oral presentations—I suggested to my mom that she ask my teacher if I could just use my left hand. Otherwise, I figured my grades wouldn't be great.
The teacher eventually agreed.
Even now, I think there should probably be a different approach to help lefties... because I used to literally lie flat on my desk while writing... I couldn't even see the letters I was forming... art class was incredibly difficult for me, too. If we used messy mediums like ink, watercolors, or tempera, my work would always look unorganized... but when we used colored pencils, things went much better. I've had this feeling since I was a kid that left-handed people really should have been taught the proper way to hold a pen or brush when using their left hand.🤷
