IRS and Tax Filing Issues in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Brenda Chase3 said:Thanks, triax, but I think we’re dealing with a different beast entirely here. Our settings are perfectly configured; we’ve actually walked through the entire setup process with IT administrators over the phone three separate times now, yet that signature button remains completely unresponsive. It isn't even throwing an error message—that would at least be progress. Instead, you click the button, it highlights as if it's registering the mouse click, and then... nothing. It’s just dead. I called support again today because we haven't heard a peep from anyone in five days, and the representative basically admitted they're getting calls about this exact issue from everyone. They couldn't tell me what's causing it or why it's happening, and more importantly, they had no idea how to fix it. They've logged the bug and they're aware of it, but honestly, they seem totally clueless on how to resolve it.

I’ve been using the IRS online portal since the early days, and I have never dealt with this much incompetence. Lately, if I haven't logged in for more than a week, it feels like some sort of digital curse kicks in and everything breaks, unfortunately...
I’m curious—did anyone else get told by their phone support that if you can't resolve the glitch on your own, they'll dispatch some kind of "field service" to your house?

When I was dealing with those signature issues, I found that this directive from the IRS actually cleared everything up for me.

Online banking interfaces vary wildly depending on which institution you’re using. For instance, over at Zappos, you might find yourself having to manually type in a recipient's name if the system doesn't automatically pull it from the database, whereas at JPMorgan Chase, that isn't even an option.
I honestly have no idea how they get away with that level of manual input given the federal regulations currently in place: which clearly outline the required elements for payment orders.

I’ll just point out that anyone with even a passing familiarity with finance will recognize those account prefixes immediately. For instance, if you see an account number starting with 31 or 32—say, 236000-3225678905—it’s clear we're looking at a personal checking or savings account, not some institutional fund for an association or non-profit (which I noticed was mentioned regarding memberships).
Furthermore, when you're processing a payment, you are absolutely required to include the recipient's full legal name and their mailing address on the payment order.

I heard that when someone wants to deposit money into a checking account using a standard paper check or a general payment slip, there might be two different ways to handle it:

a) you put the bank's routing and account number under the recipient's account field, and then just list my specific checking account number in the memo line

b) or, you just put my actual account number directly into the recipient field and leave the memo line completely blank

I guess I'm just curious if both methods work just as well, and if they do, maybe someone could let me know which way they'd suggest I use?

It is true that both ways work perfectly fine.
The method in option a) uses the bank's master account number, and from there, the funds are routed to individual checking or savings accounts based on the reference number provided.
In option b), you are essentially typing the bank's routing prefix followed immediately by your own specific account number.
My recommendation? Honestly, it’s pretty much the same thing in the end.
