Wonder (2017) in Movies ·
I honestly feel like I’m the only one who thinks this movie is pure mush 🙄
first if that little kid, who was supposedly chosen as the star student to help Auggie adjust to his new environment over summer break, ends up becoming the biggest jerk in the school? Okay, even if he did turn into a jerk, it’s even more unbelievable to me that he suddenly became self-aware of his own stupidity (that whole tired cliché) while his parents didn't🤦 In real life, it would probably be the exact opposite, or even if he did realize it, that would take years to happen in the real world. But no, here he goes from being a model student to the ultimate bully and then suddenly becomes this sensitive little boy again overnight 😵
Furthermore, the way Via just accepts the fact that she’s been neglected her entire life because of her parents—like some typical American saccharine drama where she suffers in silence but stays perfectly rational, zero rebellion, just swallowing all her pain🙄
then Miranda is the biggest WTF moment in the whole film.
She was Vija's BFF, then suddenly, without any explanation, she stops reaching out to Vija after summer camp, and the reason is just phenomenal: she became popular by lying about having a brother with facial differences, which gave her massive social status, and she even shoved a girl in the face 🙂
But of course, since everyone in this sugary mess is essentially made of pure sugar at their core, our "good fairy" Miranda hands the lead role in the play back to Vija, and before you can say "cookie," she’s right back in the Pullman household 🙂
As for Auggie's victory at the school competition and that award at the end, I have to say I was totally shocked 😲 I'm being ironic, obviously.
And Auggie's parents. I don't know, to me they are just too perfect and unified. In real life, they would most likely be a high-strung couple because on top of all life's problems, they're dealing with the biggest one: their son's deformity. But no, Pretty Woman and Owen are just super good, caring, and perfectly in sync 🙂 A little bit of actual reality wouldn't hurt, but there's none to be found in this movie.
I was expecting a few more real-life situations, you know, more realistic character depth.
Long story short, in my opinion, this movie is incredibly overrated. It isn't terrible, but the ratings and popularity it achieved definitely aren't deserved. I'm not dissatisfied, but if I were to categorize it as a "must-watch," absolutely not; I've seen plenty of much better films. To me, this is just a typical American sugary little tale without a single negative character, about a boy who, despite all his hardships, successfully fits into an environment that fully accepts him exactly as he is, and the boy lives happily ever after for 300 years 🙂

I honestly saw myself in your post, Laura Murphy3...
Every single time I start feeling like I might actually get close to someone, I just bolt. I’m pretty sure it stems from my childhood—it wasn't exactly some fairy tale. It wasn't like constant bullying or anything, but there was definitely stuff going on 😲

Where did you even get the idea that we'd feel this kind of awkwardness in those situations you described?
I'm asking because I could have written every single one of your points myself...

briskpuma0 said:Sure. People walk right in and nobody even thinks about sitting next to me. For a while there, I actually thought maybe there was something wrong with me.
It happens—you start overthinking things when your self-confidence isn't quite where it needs to be.

I went through the exact same thing. I used to constantly beat myself up thinking there was something wrong with me—and honestly, maybe there was, since my confidence was shot—but lately, I've just stopped letting it get to me.😛
Actually, I almost prefer it when no one sits by me; it feels way more chill and I get some actual breathing room.🙂
Don't let it get to you, it's really not worth the stress.👍
Serial Killers: Q&A... in Psychology ·
Men kill women because it’s all about male dominance. It’s just easier to kill a woman when she’s physically weaker; they can't fight back as effectively, which gives men this sick sense of power and satisfaction. I mean, why else would men lash out at women like this? Why beat them? Probably because they can't do it to anyone else—women are just the easiest targets...

I honestly don't think you can justify every single crime by pointing to childhood trauma. We've all been through some kind of trauma, but that doesn't make us all murderers, does it?
People claim Jack Trbosjek was a man who targeted sex workers because of a physical deformity, but I find it hard to believe he was actually a woman... though, I guess we'll never truly know the truth.

Lisa Hernandez3 said:Yes, that is incredibly painful while it's actually happening. And it's hard to move past it, especially if it's only happened once or twice in your life. For someone as young as the original poster, I suppose that's perfectly understandable. But perhaps with each subsequent time—and let's be honest, this will happen to everyone thousands of times throughout a lifetime—you become a bit wiser; you realize that these things always have their own context. If someone is mocking you, maybe it isn't just because you are being difficult, but rather because that person is simply unkind, insecure, foolish, or just looking for a fight? Those aren't exactly great qualities to have. A decent, well-adjusted person would probably rather hang out with the target of the mockery than with someone acting like that. It takes some time, I guess, to realize your own worth—what makes you a good person, a friend, a student, or a child to your parents.

No one is born to fail, though some people certainly train themselves to expect nothing and to doubt everything, especially themselves. You will always have yourself above all else, so please don't forget that—other people (especially those who are insignificant or rude) simply cannot be the yardstick for your value.

I agree with you, but unfortunately, you can't just hit "delete" on someone's nasty comments... This happens to so many kids (especially in middle and high school), and I honestly think almost everyone has experienced some form of "bullying." What's even sadder is how teachers and professors tend to turn a deaf ear when it happens, mostly because so many people feel ashamed to even speak up about it... And the people who insult others—even if they don't realize they're doing it—they end up holding others back from living a normal life, basically turning them into the same insecure messes they are themselves...😢
I don't even know what else to tell the OP, except to stay strong. Because if she’s managed to endure everything she has so far, she’s already proven she's tough. As for friends—if they just suddenly ditch you, then they weren't real friends to begin with, and you never needed them anyway. Besides, you're your own best friend.🙂

It’s so easy for everyone to sit there and preach about just ignoring what people say, but it’s a completely different story when you're actually dealing with it and facing insults on a daily basis... honestly, it just messes with your head until you start believing that you really are the person they claim you are😲. No matter how much people tell us not to care about the noise or what others think, it’s just not true. Unfortunately, some people's words don't just go in one ear and out the other; they actually stick😢
