So, here's the thing... whenever I boot up my PC, the monitor immediately goes into power saving mode. It’s not even a massive deal since it kicks back on almost the exact second the desktop actually shows up, but I can't help feeling a bit paranoid that after some random Windows update or a driver tweak, it might just decide to stay in power saving mode forever...
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme3
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 WF3 SSD
OS Drive: Intel 520 (or maybe 530) Series 120GB
Monitor Connection: DP (card) to miniDP (monitor) using the cable that came in the box
I haven't run into any actual issues with the monitor itself or the rig in general, everything seems fine otherwise...
Anyone got any thoughts on this?
Will it fit?
I’m pretty damn sure it’ll fit...
But I just want to be absolutely certain before I go messing things up.
So, I’m trying to put together a build, and here’s what I’ve managed to scrape together so far:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K.
GPU: GTX 970 (any specific model?)
SSD: SanDisk Ultra 120GB
HDD: 2x500GB (not counting this in the budget, I’ll just recycle a 500GB from my old rig plus a 500GB external)
Case: Coolermaster CMStacker (already got it, so it's not part of the cost)
RAM: 16GB (which brand?)
CD-drive: Just something basic to have... I think there are some $33 LG ones out there somewhere
Monitor: 24"; 1080p; >=120Hz
As for the PSU and motherboard, honestly, I haven't a clue... just whatever fits the level of the rest of the parts, I guess.
Overclocking: Yeah. As long as it's possible... I don't really need a fancy cooler unless the stock one is garbage, I can always just upgrade later...
SLI: Maybe. (so probably a PSU that won't die if I try that)
Budget: Looking at these parts, I figure the whole thing should stay under $3667.
If you guys think something else would fit better than what I picked, go ahead and let me have it. Just don't touch the RAM. 😁
Just thought I’d throw this out there for anyone interested... if we're talking about picking up a 240-256GB SSD, would you guys personally lean toward a Samsung evo, maybe an ADATA, or perhaps a Kingston HyperX? Or is there something else entirely that I'm just totally overlooking here...
Price-wise, I was thinking somewhere around $333, but nothing crazy far beyond that...
Feel free to merge these posts if I'm just rambling too much, I completely lost track of myself...
I guess that’s fair, I was mostly just going off what I heard from other people regarding the space requirements... though, honestly, those files could probably just be moved over to some other drives if you really needed to...
Samsung evo 120 GB vs
The prices are pretty much neck and neck on these two...
I'm guessing everyone is just going to tell me to grab the EVO, but still...
EDIT:
Actually, looking at my setup, it probably doesn't even matter because my motherboard is stuck on SATA2, so I'm basically capped at around 250MB/s anyway...
Is it worth picking up the slightly better one now just to toss it into a new rig later when I finally upgrade to something with SATA3 support? And does anyone actually know how long these SSDs are supposed to last before they give up the ghost?
EDIT2:
From what I can gather, the lifespan is roughly 25 years, so I guess it’s worth the investment after all. And yeah, the EVO seems like the smarter play here, I think.
Look, I get it, sure, but honestly? I feel like there are way better SSDs out there if you're willing to shell out just a tiny bit more... I mean, I really dig this ADATA one, it's got something about it... but seriously, if anyone else has some killer ideas, just throw them out there and let's see what happens...
@crimsonstag84/">@
@crimsonstag84 That SSD has such a pathetic write speed for an SSD, honestly...
@Larry Ortiz The 60GB one is a bit snappier, I guess, but they're both pretty much in the same mediocre ballpark...
So, basically, I'm looking to pick up an SSD just to host Windows 7 on it... I want to keep everything else—you know, all my Users, Program Files, and Program Data folders*—sitting right on my old hard drive. I won't need more than 30GB for the OS itself, honestly even less than 10 would probably do the trick, but it'd still be nice to have a little extra breathing room if I want to launch a game or some software a bit snappier, so I'm not exactly sweating a tiny bit of extra space. Anyway, what I'm really hunting for is a decent little SSD, maybe something around 64GB, that actually packs enough punch to feel fast—like, at least 400MB r/w—without me having to shell out more than $167.
*And before anyone starts talking nonsense, I know how it works, there's such a thing as NTFS junction points
Fl@Tron I'm still trying to wrap my head around what was just said... honestly, it’s like some people just don't get how things actually work out here in the States... anyway, Anthony Garcia14 was saying...
Wait, you’re actually putting this up for sale? Seriously?
I wouldn't... honestly...
So I was looking at this CPU running at 3GHz and, honestly, it just gets me thinking about how much we overlook the little things... you know? Like, people act like raw clock speed is the end-all, be-all of performance, but then you actually sit down to work and realize how much everything else matters too. It’s kind of like driving a car where the speedometer says one thing, but the actual engine feel tells you a completely different story... anyway, what was I saying... yeah, that 3GHz mark, it feels right on the edge of being enough for most stuff, but then you hit a heavy workload and suddenly it feels like you're trying to run a marathon in flip-flops... it's frustrating, really...
You just buy a new graphics card and suddenly everything is fine... life is good again... peace at last... 😁 I mean, you could still drive it if you really wanted to... but honestly, why would you even bother at this point? It’s just asking for trouble... 🙂
Look, I’m not selling anything, okay? I don't exactly have a mountain of cash lying around to go out and drop on something brand new... 😁
I mean, honestly, this stuff is actually pretty decent... I had my TR9 running on Ultra and it didn't even break a sweat... 😁
I was just sitting here wondering what the hell it would even be worth today... I picked it up back in the day for about ten bucks... $0.00 Five years ago... everything was just different, you know? I can't even wrap my head around how much has shifted since then, and honestly, looking back makes me want to scream a little bit... things were simpler, maybe a bit more predictable, but now we’re all just spinning our wheels in this chaotic mess we call modern life... turns out time really does move faster when you aren't paying attention, and I feel like I blinked and the whole world just decided to flip upside down without asking anyone first...
So, here’s what I’m running at the moment:
Intel Core i7-12700K
ATI Sapphire Radeon 4870HD
4GB DDR2 RAM, honestly can't even remember if it's 1600 MHz or something slower...
2x 500GB HD, probably spinning at 7200 rpm

You’re totally unhinged... though then again, neither am I...
Actually, it really just depends on how you define "normal," doesn't it?
The fact that you actually prefer crunching numbers over going out or hitting the beach...
that puts you in a pretty small minority...
So it’s not even that you aren't normal, it's just that you're fundamentally different...
Which kind of goes to show how we all just fall into line with whatever the majority thinks is happening. I don't know...
once I finally figure out how to do it properly, I’m going to spend my free time calculating the user_placeholder constant to as many decimal places as humanly possible... 😁😁😁😁

And here I was thinking I was the only one who wasn't functioning like a normal human being... 😁😁😁😁
So, I’m sitting here on this four-hour Amtrak ride during a school field trip, and while basically everyone else in my grade is losing their minds and just messing around, I’ve actually been sitting here grinding through some math problems... Am I totally losing it?
I guess I just know that I'm one of those people who stands out from the crowd...
👍
So, basically, just like the title says, I really ought to have a full list of the moderators and which specific subreddits or boards they’re running, just in case I accidentally end up causing some kind of massive headache or mess...😁I’d seriously appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction...🙏🙏
