GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
how much of a real-world difference are we actually talking about when choosing between the 3GB and 6GB VRAM versions of that NVIDIA GTX 1060? like, if I'm running something heavy like GTA V or Call of Duty, would I even notice

So I was scrolling through CNN.com and spotted an MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB priced at $400. Is that actually a solid deal or am I just dreaming?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my GPU soon and I've got about $1,500$833 set aside for it—maybe even a few hundred more if the right card pops up. As for my current setup, I'm running an i5-4460 with 8GB of RAM, though I'm definitely planning to grab at least another 4GB to beef things up. My power supply is a Be Quiet! 480W modular unit with an 80+ Bronze rating. For the last couple of years, I've been getting by with an ASUS R9 270X (using two 6-pin connectors), but it's time for something better. Does anyone have any solid recommendations on what I should pick up? It would be awesome if you could drop some direct links to specific cards from places like Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon, or Micro Center

Right now, I've got a single 4GB stick of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 sitting in my rig. I was wondering if I could toss a G.Skill Trident Z 4GB stick in there to run in dual channel mode since my motherboard supports it? Or would it be better to just grab a 1x8GB stick instead? Thanks in advance!
Gaming lag issues – any advice? in IT Support ·
It’s not just an issue with PES either; it’s the exact same thing happening with GRID or Call of Duty 4... basically, everything just stutters like crazy even when I crank the settings down to low. It’s super weird because on my old rig, these games actually ran smoother at higher resolutions than they do now. I honestly can't wrap my head around it.

It’s actually kind of playable if you drop everything down to low settings and run it at a crusty 800x600 resolution... but any other way you try to play it, the whole thing just crawls along like a snail in peanut butter, basically running one frame at a time.

Look, I totally get that integrated graphics can be a massive pain and pretty much suck, but are you seriously telling me it can't even handle something like FIFA 13 or a similar title? I used to run a dual-core 2.6 processor with 2 GB of DDR2 RAM on an integrated setup, and I could play stuff like that on medium settings at 1024x768 without any stuttering at all. Why is my current rig struggling so much more than that?

I didn't say that, man. I was just saying I'd totally expect Grand Theft Auto IV or heavy hitters like that to lag, but I don't get why FIFA 13 and those kinds of games are acting up too.

So, here’s what I’m running right now:
Motherboard: ASRock N68C-GS UCC
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad, 3.1GHz
RAM: Kingston HyperX Blue 1x4gb DDR3 1600MHz
Hard Drive: 1x160gb Apple
PSU: EVGA 600W

The PC itself is actually pretty smooth for everyday stuff—browsing Facebook or watching YouTube works just fine without any hiccups. But here's the catch: I used to have an Nvidia 8800 GTS 640 mb 384-bit in there, but since I pulled it out, basically every game I try to launch is a total stutterfest. I'm using a 19'' monitor at 1440x900, but even when I crank the in-game settings way down to the absolute lowest resolution and graphics, it still chugs along like crazy. And I'm not even talking about heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV or Tomb Raider; I mean stuff like FIFA 13. Even on the lowest possible settings, the lag is unbearable. I've tried nuking Windows and reinstalling different versions a bunch of times, and I've definitely got the integrated graphics drivers installed, but nothing seems to fix it. 😢

Any ideas on how to tackle this? Does anyone know what might be causing such a massive headache?

Thanks a ton, guys. I’m gonna sit on this for a bit and weigh my options—either I dump the whole rig to build something fresh or just swap out the CPU for this Phenom ii x4 945 🙂
CPU upgrade ideas? in Desktops ·
Right now, this rig is doing its job just fine, but I’m looking to give it a little extra kick so I can squeeze another year or two out of it before I save up enough for a serious upgrade. This setup was built back when these parts were actually top-tier, though I did recently drop in a new GPU. If I had the cash lying around, I’d probably grab the $217 quad core (AMD Athlon ii x4 750 k 3.4) along with an ASRock FM2A88M Extreme4 + ), which seems like a solid deal, but then I'd be stuck buying new RAM too, which adds at least $67 to the bill—and my wallet just isn't ready for that kind of hit right now. So, I’m basically wondering if anyone could tell me if that upgrade is actually worth it for gaming, or if there's some other CPU in that same ballpark that would perform better? Thanks 🙂

Also, looking at the prices for the Phenom ii x4 945, they're sitting at over $133, which honestly feels like a bit of a rip-off for what it is right now 🙂

Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2

By any logical standard, that CPU should be at least 50% faster, maybe even twice as quick, but I'm really wondering if that 2.2 GHz chip is actually going to hold its own in games. Right now, my rig is basically my daily driver for gaming and just surfing the web, so if the jump isn't massive, I’d honestly rather just bite the bullet, wait a bit longer, and grab a different motherboard with a more modern socket and a beefier processor. But hey, if this one can keep me afloat for another year or two, I might just pull the trigger on it now.

Right now, my rig is running 4GB of DDR2 RAM, an Nvidia GTX 650, and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000 + 2,6 GHz Dual-Core.

I've got a deal on the table ($83) for an AMD Phenom x4 9550 2.2 GHz Quad-Core. Is it actually worth pulling the trigger on a CPU swap, or am I just throwing cash down the drain for a negligible speed boost?

My big question is whether those four cores are actually going to do anything useful during gameplay, or if I should be prioritizing raw clock speed instead.
Since gaming is pretty much all I do with this machine, I really want to know if this will help me tackle heavier titles like Battlefield 3 and stuff in that same ballpark.

Budget gaming PC build under $450 in Desktops ·
Thinking about picking up a new rig and I’ve got a $3k budget to play with. Ideally, I'd love to go with an Intel processor, but I'm not strictly married to that idea... just looking for the tower itself. I've already got my storage, a burner, and a power supply (an LC Power 450W) ready to go. If that PSU is total junk and needs an upgrade to handle the new build, fine by me, but if it holds up, I'll just keep it running

Gigabyte Motherboard
So, I'm looking at this setup, and the heart of the machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000 running at 2.6GHz. It’s like having a reliable old Chevy engine under the hood—it might not be winning any drag races against the latest high-tech supercars, but it gets you where you need to go without making a fuss.
3GB of DDR2 memory running at 667MHz.
Just one 160GB SATA hard drive in there.
So, I'm looking at this little Radeon HD5450 with 512MB of memory—it’s that slim, low-profile style.
Power Supply: 450W LC Power

Honestly, it’s not a huge amount of cash, so I figure it’s worth grabbing this processor just to tide me over for another year or two while I save up for a proper new rig. As for a GPU, I’ll play it by ear and see what I end up picking up later on.
My current LE-1600 is just a single-core chip running at 2.2GHz, but I’ve actually managed to overclock it to 2.98GHz since the temps stay super low. This new one is a dual-core and comes clocked at 2.6GHz out of the box, so I could probably push that up to around 2.9GHz too.
Right now, the only thing keeping the CPU cool is the stock AMD cooler http://www.kisildalur.is/web/uploads...s/1237_big.jpg and part of me is worried about something frying, though I think it’ll hold up fine—plus, I should have a few more fans arriving in the mail any day now.
...I usually jump into the BIOS using the DELETE key
I haven't messed with a BIOS update yet, but I guess it's about time I learned how to do it.😁Do you think my current processor will still work if I flash to that new version required for this dual-core (the F6 version)?
I stumbled upon this awesome site Newegg and it looks pretty solid for $13 http://img.dxcdn.com/productimages/sku_174120_1.jpg and I'm planning to grab the processor from there as well; some buddies of mine have ordered from them before and nobody has had any issues.

No worries, man, I mentioned this like 15 or 20 posts ago before you even hopped into the thread :P I can snag an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000 x Brisbane Socket AM2 2.6 for about $26, which is actually a bit less than $50. On eBay, they’re going for around $83

That chip would go right into my motherboard, but I'm really sweating whether I'll be able to squeeze all the power out of it. That's why I pasted that English text earlier—I'm terrified it might throttle the CPU speed, and if that happens, the whole deal isn't worth it to me. This one is rated at 65W according to the link you shared

I also dug up some info saying this processor needs the F6 version of the BIOS. I'm not totally sure which version I'm running right now, but Gigabyte has all the update links ready to go on their site
