Feeling ashamed of failing in front of others in Psychology & Therapy ·
Why do people bother asking others how they’re doing? It strikes me as a rather hollow ritual. Most of the time, it's simply because they lack anything remotely substantive to contribute to a conversation, or perhaps it's just become this mindless, reflexive social script we all follow to avoid awkward silence.

copperhawk862 said:Honestly, I think people ask these things just so they can compare themselves to everyone else later on. There’s really no reason to feel embarrassed about someone sitting in their own living room later, acting like they're smarter than everyone else—including you. Bragging to your parents or old neighbors about passing some college entrance exam doesn't actually mean anything. We live in a culture where success is measured by pieces of paper rather than actual skill. That's more a flaw in our society than you.
You shouldn't feel ashamed when people "kindly" pry into your grades. It honestly just says more about them and how much they love sticking their noses where they don't belong.
It would be great if next time you could just snap back and tell them to go check the university registrar themselves, but... we aren't exactly living in a country full of self-aware people, so... it probably wouldn't matter anyway.

I truly don't see why anyone in a professional field would bother asking you that. Either the person asking is so uninspired that they have nothing better to talk about (meaning they're just looking for a target), or they just need something juicy to gossip about at the local coffee shop, like, "Did you hear about her? She hasn't even finished her degree yet."

No, seriously, you don't need to feel embarrassed. Exams aren't a true reflection of your intelligence or how hard you work... most of the time, they're just a test of how good you are at cramming or finding shortcuts. In 90% of cases, anyway.

Honestly, what's the big deal? People ask because they're genuinely curious or because they've run out of topics. Personally, I would never ask someone their grades just so I could smugly smirk about my own higher marks.
Nobody actually cares, so there is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed.
Besides, isn't it trendy these days to be a complete failure?
I'm heading to my five-year high school reunion soon, and I already know the drill: everyone will be graduated, married, employed, and acting like responsible adults, while I'll be the lone outlier.
And so what? Who cares.
Just relax.
Does it feel like everyone just wants to be a martyr? in Psychology & Therapy ·
You can't look at it through that lens.
Every individual’s struggle is their own unique mountain to climb.
Some people manage to maintain a positive outlook even while undergoing chemotherapy, whereas others might spiral into total despair just because of a bad breakup.
There are moments when I honestly feel like I would rather be facing a cancer diagnosis than dealing with the sheer onslaught of mental health struggles I've been dealt. At least with a physical illness, there is often a tangible hope for a cure.
I am not suggesting one is objectively better or worse than the other; you simply cannot—and perhaps should not—compare such fundamental human experiences.
I truly hope that Karamel, myself, and everyone else involved will pull through this, so that one day we can all sit back, much like you, and find genuine joy in every single ray of sunshine.

She's clearly dealing with her own stuff and has her own way of processing things, and if she's reaching out to ask for help, I guarantee nobody is going to step up if all they offer are snarky comments or constant judgment.

Look, the thing is, everyone keeps throwing ideas and advice at her, yet all she does is harp on about how miserable and unloved she is, acting as if she's carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Try offering her a suggestion yourself; then you'll see exactly what kind of response you get. "I can't," "I don't know," "Everything is just godawful." That's the routine.
Despite how it might seem, I wasn't sitting here dissecting her character. Perhaps it's because her situation gets under my skin—partly because I see far too much of myself in her. People tell me I need to snap out of it, too. I know exactly what steps I need to take to feel better, yet I remain paralyzed, doing absolutely nothing.
It isn't that I have some innate desire to be a victim; it's simply that I've occupied that role for far too long. It has become a deeply ingrained habit, and we all know how difficult those are to break.
Frankly, I am fed up. I am sick to death of the self-pity, sick of this pathetic existence, and utterly exhausted by my own inability to function. I am tired of knowing precisely where the solution to my problems lies and still wallowing in the mud like a newborn pig.
I am sick of myself, and I am sick of people who mirror my own flaws. Though, to be fair, while I couldn't care less about my own state, I sincerely wish for others to avoid becoming anything like me.
It brings me no joy to admit that today I didn't even bother to get out of bed, let alone brush my teeth or drink a single glass of water. It brings me even less joy to realize that these tasks are effortless and mundane for "normal" people, and to know that I possess the knowledge of how to make them simple for myself, too.
But I do nothing, because I am an idiot. And I loathe myself for it.
I suppose it really is easier to just wither away at home than to face the risk of being hurt, of failing at something, or of having someone offer a genuine smile. It’s easier than enjoying a coffee with friends, walking through a park, or even the indignity of tripping and falling into a puddle. It's easier than actually living life.
Life is terrifying.

Kevin Ramos10 said:I mean, maybe the woman actually does have some issues going on, because let's be real—99% of people just act out because they’re desperate for attention, but you know there are those rare cases where someone genuinely struggles with it, and I'd say most folks just take everything way too personally and end up hurting themselves over it.

I don't doubt that possibility—believe me, I deal with my own fair share of baggage—but the reality here is that she does nothing but vent and ask for advice that she has absolutely no intention of actually following.
She's as useful as a broken screen on a smartphone.
It seems, quite clearly, that she actually finds a certain comfort in playing the victim.
Caramel, don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking you personally, but let's be honest about how things actually are.

In that case, why on earth do you insist on constantly peddling such baseless rumors?

but most of them are actually quite sick,
they didn't choose this state of mind and they're trying their best to get out of it,
though you do get those people who just want to stay miserable because they're bored
since they don't have any real problems to deal with...

🤷

Do you see a bit of yourself in that?

Being "emo" is trendy.
There isn't much profound wisdom to be found there.

Read the papers, people—everyone loves sticking their nose into someone else's business.
But maybe don't pick up a fig journal or anything of the sort.
Though, I suppose if you did, you'd likely attract some creep. And since your goal seems to be getting people to crowd around and rub against you on the subway, perhaps that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
