Need advice: Sestrin's boyfriend is couchsurfing at our place in Psychology & Therapy ·
I hear you loud and clear. I dealt with a similar mess back in high school, except I was dealing with my sister. I don't care what anyone says. It’s just common sense. She’s well past those years now. Back when she was maybe sixteen, she dove headfirst into her first intense relationship.🙄 I’m dating this guy my age, and he basically moved in without even asking. He's always over for dinner, crashing on our couch, and hanging out in front of the TV—usually with his entire group of friends in tow. It’s constant. The house is like Grand Central Station.

Old people are their own breed—way too stuck in their ways for my liking. And when a teenager says that, you already know they're just talking nonsense.😁Because of their work schedule, they were out of the house constantly, so they didn't even realize he was practically living there—especially at first. I didn't want to snitch or cause a scene, even though my sister and I were miserable. There was zero privacy and absolutely no intimacy.

Look, we have a massive house, but I am still constantly irritated by them. They are everywhere—the kitchen, the living room, even the bathroom. Maybe people who haven't lived with roommates won't get it; they’ll probably ask, "Why are you being so dramatic?" But it isn't the same thing. It's that shift in how you feel in your own home. For instance, I always had to plan my outfits ahead of time just to shower, lugging all my clothes into the bathroom because I didn't want to run into my sister's boyfriend while I was half-dressed. My morning ritual is having coffee in front of the TV, but no—they’ve already staked out the territory. I want to use my computer, but nope, he’s already glued to it. These are supposedly "small" things, but they are incredibly intrusive. I’ve had to start calculating every single move just to function in my own house. It is exhausting.

She didn't notice one bit. Just like yours: "What's it to you?" 🙂 Nothing. I've just got a complete stranger walking around my house... Of course, she doesn't see it. She's blinded by love.😍 The whole situation just got under my skin. It completely trashed my relationship with my sister. I couldn't stand him—I had an immediate visceral reaction to his invasive behavior. You know that feeling when you realize it’s time to walk away? To just go home? Moving into someone's place overnight like that isn't okay. No. He moved in instantly. Like a parasite.
The elderly folks actually felt for him, seeing as his family is struggling financially and who knows what kind of mess he's dealing with back home.

If I ever had the nerve to confront my sister and ask why they don't just go visit him at his place or somewhere else—just to get them out of the house—I’d always get the same excuses. "His apartment is too small," or "his dad is a weirdo," or my personal favorite: "You wouldn't understand, you've never even had a boyfriend." 🙂 I've thought about it too, and honestly? Even if I had a boyfriend, there's no way I'd be sitting around the house with him all day long.

And now? What kind of luck have I had? After that first guy, two more of her boyfriends "couchsurfed" at our place, if you know what I mean. It's obvious my sister has a thing for guys who just want to move in and live off someone else's dime.

After that first disaster, I learned my lesson. I went straight to my sister and gave her an earful about how much this whole mess is affecting me. Hopefully, she finally realized how livid I am—or maybe she just grew up. Pff.🙄I finally realized something. At the end of the day, I’m the one who gets to pick the room and decide what we're watching on TV. If they like my choices, they can join me; if not, well, they can deal with it. That was the compromise that came out of the argument: I always get the final say.😁 Look, I know it sounds harsh, but believe me: even under those "new house rules," they chose to be obnoxious guests. That's on them. And honestly? All those guys my sister was dating back then probably still think I'm some total loser, but I couldn't care less 😁
.
Bottom line: if I could handle it—and I’m two years younger than my sister—then you, being the older brother, need to step up and just lay down the law. I despise it when parents are too soft and the kids have to play parent, but sometimes it's the only way.

Here is the real advice: don't just sit there swallowing your frustration. Have a serious talk with your sister once it's clear the parents aren't going to help. And start making her boyfriend feel slightly unwelcome—just subtle enough that he gets the hint. Trust me, I've used plenty of tactics... ugh. Look, I'm not trying to lecture you, I just wanted to share what I went through so you know you're not alone in this mess 😁

Honestly? It’s mediocre. A total snooze-fest. The premise was decent, but they completely dropped the ball on the execution—especially when it comes to researching her actual job.

Hmm... doesn't sound promising. I'll probably watch it anyway.

Emily Rogers67 said:That's a sad reality, though. I'd love to go to the theater, but they never show stuff like this—it's just endless blockbusters. Maybe there's one movie worth seeing at the AMC. 😢

True enough...
I don't know what city you're in, but if you're in NYC, check out the Angelika for recent quality films. Or hit up a film festival at the Regal.

Emily Rogers67 said:I wonder if she actually loved him, or if she just felt like she owed him something—maybe even her own company?

At first, it was definitely the latter. But I think she started developing real feelings for him toward the end of the movie. That moment when he plays the flute for her is the turning point.😁 You can see it in how she looks at him. So yeah, I'm betting her feelings were genuine by the end.

I forgot to mention this earlier:
Brandon Lee3 said:It’s incredible that the actress co-wrote the script with the director. Honestly, it's impressive that she writes her own scripts just so she can star in them.

Yes, agreed. I watched a few interviews with her. She's an interesting woman; feels like she actually has something to say.🙂
Have you seen this movie where she also co-wrote and starred? The reviews look decent, so I'll check it out soon.

That would mean there's a chance his wife and kid are still alive on country 2, and he’d definitely want to see them. But there's probably a version of him there too. 😁
Maybe he wanted to go there just to find his wife and hunt for a "happier" version of Rhoda? And then she ended up coming to country 1. 😁

Yeah, I don't see how finding his wife and kid—alongside another version of himself—would actually be a comfort. That sounds incredibly frustrating. Sure, seeing them alive and talking to them is great, but then what? Eventually, he’ll have to come back to country 1 because he won't fit in there anymore. 😁 He'd just face that agonizing separation all over again and ultimately have to let them go. Why put himself through that torture? At least that's my take. I don't know... maybe knowing they're out there living happy lives is enough for him, even if it isn't with him. Either way, he remains a tragic figure. 🤷

As for this idea about him searching for a "happier" version of Rhoda... I highly doubt it. A version of her from another country (a successful, happy Rhoda) and the version of him from country 1 wouldn't have anything in common. Their emotional bond exists specifically because they are both psychologically broken. She’s dealing with the guilt of killing two people and the fact that her life was basically ruined (no degree, no ambition, etc.), while he's lost his entire family and sees no point in anything. Those exact traumas and mental states are what pulled them together.

Sure, anyone can interpret things however they want. It’s interesting to see people have such different takes.

SPOILERS
Look, the reason I'm leaning toward the other theory (the one Susan Ramirez2 and Austin Roberts4 hold): it feels like the filmmakers went out of their way in those final scenes to show that she from the other country is completely different from her counterpart on the first planet. It wasn't just the clothes—it was her attitude and the whole vibe.😁

Emily Rogers67 said:It just seems logical that she wouldn't show up on Earth 1 wearing the same work clothes she uses for cleaning...

They could have easily portrayed her as a "normal" clone of the woman from the first country. She probably would've worn a hoodie or a cap—something we've already seen her character wear. This felt totally out of character, which is why I assumed life for the woman from the other country took a different path entirely.

Emily Rogers67 said:That woman from country 2 didn't exactly look happy in the final scene.

She doesn't need to look happy. I think she's just as confused seeing her "double" on the other planet. She might even be thinking, "Damn, you look terrible, what happened to you?" 😁

Then there's this whole idea about life synchronicity between countries breaking the moment a person becomes aware of the other world (once it becomes visible). Given what happened right before the accident... it makes more sense to me that things had already started diverging.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dismiss your experience or your take on the movie. I'm just explaining why I favor this interpretation of the ending.🙂

Here is how I interpreted the ending:....

Me too.
Such a great film. It had an incredible atmosphere and really stuck with me. I was still thinking about it long after the credits rolled. Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet and enjoys this kind of "philosophical" sci-fi.😁
Karen Green97 said:Is this some kind of mistake with Wilco or what...?

Aha... they must mean the one from last month that was labeled "Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival opening."🤦
The seventh annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, scheduled for June 28th through the 30th at the lakeside island park, has already confirmed its lineup. Expect to see Mando Diao, The Cranberries, Gogol Bordello, Wilco, Retro Stefson, Iness Mezel, Tamikret, General Elektriks, and Franz Ferdinand.

Is this Wilco mention a typo or what?
Does anyone know if they're doing free rides on the CTA to Lake Michigan this year if you show your Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival ticket? It’s been done before in previous years.

Anyway, there's zero mention of transit here:

Fair point. You're right.
A shame...
So, nothing since Beirut, huh?
And now Cypress Hill is on the way too.
Yes, I know I could have just Googled it, but I wanted to see how you all actually use it in context...
Thanks for clarifying. 🙂
What does 'unjkav' even mean? This word keeps popping up on this thread so often that I’m actually starting to feel embarrassed that I don't know it yet.
