Whether life actually feels good or not really comes down to...:

- your whole value system and what you actually prioritize
- how you view yourself in the mirror
- how much you actually crave feeling happy

There isn't some one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

For me, happiness is all about health—mine and my family's, having solid relationships at home, a roof over my head, and enough decent income to actually grow spiritually and mentally—which basically means being able to buy the books I want, having high-speed internet, catching a concert or hitting up a theater, and traveling out of town every once in a while...

I honestly couldn't care less about owning fancy apartments, cars, designer couches, crystal sets, gold, or any of that other nonsense—houses, diamonds, real estate, or whatever. Seriously, I don't NEED any of that stuff to live a great life.

Love is a pretty specific "ingredient" when it comes to a good life—you can be with someone where the passion is off the charts but the relationship itself is just toxic and exhausting... then there's the type where everything is peaceful and truly loving, but you miss those "butterflies" in your stomach. And look, love is essential for a "good life"... or at least some version of it. What you end up choosing depends on your maturity level and maybe even a bit of luck or fate...

I'm not sure how much of this is just pure fate, though it probably plays a part, but I don't really know what destiny actually is, so I won't pretend to speak on it...

Sometimes I feel like we're all walking around with these totally unfair expectations that we're personally going to hit the lottery, fly private jets, get local awards, or find these incredibly devoted lovers.

But when you look at the reality of most people's lives compared to those fantasies, most "models" of living seem pretty pathetic by comparison.

A huge chunk of people taking AT&T find their sex drive totally tanking, especially if they've been on them for a while. Honestly, getting that libido back to how it used to be is a massive struggle, even after you've been off the meds for several months.

Look, your doctor is legally obligated to walk you through all those side effects before you start anything.
Emotional Intelligence: A blessing or a curse? in Psychology ·
If I’m reading you right, the reason you even bothered starting this thread isn't because you're some saintly empath with endless sensitivity, but because those traits are actually getting in your way during your day-to-day life.

The thing is, these issues usually just VANISH once you’re actually staring down REAL problems—you know, actual high-stakes responsibilities like managing your own life, keeping a job, or looking after your kids. Basically, when there are real consequences for dropping the ball, things change.

Once you’re facing the kind of real-world pressure that matters, your survival instinct kicks in, and you’ll start using those intuitive abilities instinctively (and I'm assuming you won't be weaponizing them) to solve whatever mess you're in, all while ditching the extra baggage that just slows you down and makes you feel vulnerable or weak.

True challenges and adult responsibilities force a healthy dose of selfishness out of us—what people nowadays call "self-love"—and they give us the ability to clearly distinguish between what actually matters in our lives and what’s just noise.

Until then, hey, you’ve got all the freedom in the world to sit around and lament about how much your intelligence and empathy weigh you down... which doesn't really hurt anyone, but it's not exactly going to lead to any major breakthroughs, either.
Her, my mother-in-law, or me? in Psychology ·
Look, you can't just sit there expecting your husband or his mother to suddenly flip a switch and become different people. There was never any healthy boundary established between them—that natural separation between parent and child just never happened. Most likely, it’s because his father was either weak, totally checked out, or just completely absent when it mattered. Toss in a mother who already had those dominant personality traits and this desperate need for validation and affection she couldn't get from her husband or her own family, and you've got a recipe for disaster. She consciously and subconsciously made her son dependent on her, and she definitely didn't do a single thing to push him out into the world or help him actually stand on his own two feet.

There isn't really a "fix" here in terms of changing who they are. Your options are basically to pack your bags and get out, or you play the game while setting some ground rules for yourself along the way.

If you go with the second option—just let his mom handle the cooking and the cleaning. Give her even more chores by telling her that nobody else can do it quite as perfectly as she can. Then, you take that reclaimed time to do whatever the hell you want, hang out with your kid, and actually live your life.

Personally? I think I'd just run for the hills. All this stuff about her barging into your room and the total lack of intimacy in your marriage? That doesn't smell right to me at all. It's toxic.

And honestly, that lack of sex? Blame the mother—not directly, but blame her influence. Your husband probably feels, deep down in his subconscious, that being intimate with you is somehow betraying his mom. It's also possible he's using it as a way to "punish" you because you aren't catering to his mother the way he wants you to.

Bottom line, this whole situation is a nightmare and I know it's heavy for you... But look, you either have to adapt and find a way to live that works for you, or you walk away. If you don't do one or the other, you're just inviting physical or mental illness into your life. So, it's up to you.

Jonathan Kim4 said:I honestly don't quite grasp the point of all these similar gatherings—not just the gay parades, but even certain concerts...

I mean, at the end of the day, I really want to see how the average person reacts—you know, those folks who seem to think they might suddenly turn gay just because they shared a drink with one of them after the show.

Ultimately, we need to start having these conversations, because that’s the only way to actually strip away the stigma surrounding this "group."

Think about it—back in the day, people used to burn women at the stake like witches, and it took them a while to realize just how foolish they were being.

Perhaps a thing like San Francisco Pride could help people see that these are just regular people, just like anyone else, and maybe then the attacks will finally stop.

Yeah, I guess that’s basically why they put those parades together. Honestly, the whole thing feels kind of ridiculous to me because I’ve never had an issue with gay people, nor has anyone in my neck of the woods. They’ve always seemed totally normal to me, and frankly, their personalities are way more interesting than who they happen to be dating.

Whatever, let them march if they want to. To me, it just looks a little pathetic. And honestly, it sucks because I know how these things usually go down... A few years back right here, a group of Skinheads went after them, and I think the cops just completely lost control of the situation too... It was a total disaster. Just pure, unadulterated primitivism.
Are homophobes just closeted? in Psychology ·
Yeah, basically any kind of suppression just triggers negative vibes toward whatever is being pushed down or even toward people who represent it.

But look, I honestly DON'T GET IT, and I seriously can't wrap my head around why it's such a massive deal to broadcast your sexual orientation to the world—and ideally right in the middle of the street, too...? Because, truthfully, I don't see how the gay community differs from anyone else besides that one specific thing, and I don't see why it needs to be used to highlight differences between people.

For instance, over here in the States, we have guys like Johnny Appleseed, who came out as homosexual back when that was a total TABOO, back when nobody dared to say anything, and this guy recently stated—to paraphrase—that he finds it "tasteless to discuss his own sexual affinities even if he isn't hiding them." And man, I really tip my hat to him. Like, for crying out loud, being homosexual isn't a career choice...

I mean, can someone please just explain to me WHY it’s necessary to parade your sexual preferences through the city; I mean, who actually cares?

Would it be considered OK if everyone who enjoys a certain "type" of sex got together and organized an "ass-pride" or a "fellatio-pride"...? Maybe even a "sado-masochism pride"—those people would at least be a thousand times more interesting for psychoanalysis than homosexuals...

So, what you're actually asking is if I’m one of those people who’s nostalgic for the "good old days," right? Like, what exactly am I so fond of about how things used to be? Honestly, it’s not some fairy tale version of the past, it's just that everything felt more grounded before everything became a frantic, digital mess. There are still spots on this planet where life moves at a human pace instead of a fiber-optic one, so why wouldn't I want that? And hey, if you think I'm so obsessed with the past, why don't you just pack your bags and head out to one of those places yourself?

Why? Because people love to claim we just "don't live like we used to."

Look, the fact that you went down the path of using drugs is the ultimate proof that the system already chewed you up and spit you out. It’s exactly what they want; they suck you in, drain everything you have, and then just toss you aside like nothing.

I think you’re seriously overestimating your own experience here. The reasons why people actually bail on things are way more layered and complicated than the stuff you're laying out, and honestly, most of those motives start exactly where your little grievances end.

Don't you get that smiling, sucking up, dressing up, and all that extra fluff is just a choice? Your choice is to not do any of it, while someone else chooses to go all out. So what's the actual problem?

Every time I tried to be a "decent person" by your standards, I failed miserably, and I ended up hating myself for even trying.
I’m exhausted by you people and your endless prejudices and stereotypes. You refuse to see reality. All you care about is yourselves and your polished egos.
And don't get me started on those mindless clones posing in overpriced bistros; they’ll probably just marry for a paycheck. They don't give a damn about love; they just want the cash. Some are so clueless they don't even realize they aren't in love—they're just in love with themselves, clinging to some guy who exists solely to cater to their childish whims.
You dream of trips to Mauritius or Bali. Why? Just to snap a few photos to prove your "status" and show everyone you can live high on the hog.
You’re totally oblivious and pretty damn stupid.
All you do is want. You're constantly terrified of being left behind, feeling that pressure to fit in. Every once in a while, you toss a couple of bucks to some poor soul and think you’ve done a good deed. Poor Jadnicak, he's got nothing to eat.
What do you actually have? Nothing but obligations. You’re shackled, and your souls are miles away from freedom. You lost yourselves a long time ago.
Your lives are just templates. You’re machines. Every morning is a carbon copy. The alarm goes off, you get up, brush your teeth, and shove your feet into expensive—yet somehow still depressing—shoes, tightening a tie that defines your look but actually strangles you.
It reminds me of people going to the gym...
Is that really living? Is there any beauty in that?
Is luxury your only goal? Not eating at a local burger joint, but insisting on some five-star restaurant instead. What will you say when you retire? What will you say on your deathbed?
Whose life have I lived? You will all umrecet happy.

Honor to the exceptions.

Behind every single effort to be accepted lies the need for an individual to impose and affirm their own value system. There's nothing pathetic about that; if anything, I'd say there's plenty of ruthlessness involved.

Exactly. Everything comes with a price.
Your "better position" is just whatever you feel when you stab someone in the back. To reach that "position," you have to swallow a little—or a lot—of shit first.
I don't see the difference.

What do you think we'd gain if we were all coated in "uncultured manners"? Would things actually be better?

Fake morality is just the logical byproduct of mediocre social rules. Society forces you to follow the rules that proved most effective for the community's survival, while you as an individual look for space to indulge your own desires that clash with those rules, playing games and bending things just so you don't have to face the consequences.

If you actually stepped out into the middle of Broadway and called your mom to come tie a tire around your wrist, then maybe—just maybe—I’d start believing you finally ditched that fake-ass "moral high ground" you're always preaching about.

To actually be a "human being"—whatever that means to you, me, or anyone else—it really boils down to one thing: it’s about being a certain kind of entity. It’s not just some vague concept either; it’s about possessing specific qualities that set you apart from just existing.
It all comes down to those raw survival instincts, man. You can study all the manuals you want, but when things actually hit the fan, it’s that gut feeling that keeps you breathing. It's about that primal drive to just stay alive when everything else goes sideways.
I’m talking about being fully dialed in—having that total awareness of who I am, everything I do, and exactly what’s going on in the world around me.

I honestly think that’s a killer combination for any living thing. It’s exactly why we’ve made it this far.

It honestly doesn't matter if you're out there surviving in the middle of the jungle or just grinding away in the heart of New York City. It’s all the exact same game.

Having this level of consciousness, especially when you factor in the ability to actually move around and make things happen in the world, basically hands you the keys to the kingdom—it gives you the power to choose exactly how and where you’re going to express your own humanity.

I mean, where exactly are you getting stuck on this?

Wait, didn't you just spend that whole time listing nothing but a bunch of your own personal biases about people?

Look, at the end of the day, you’ve gotta put yourself first and prioritize your own needs, because if you don't, you just end up becoming this bitter, resentful mess that eventually becomes nothing more than a massive burden on your community or the people around you. It's simple math: thinking about yourself isn't being selfish, it's a fundamental law of survival, whether you like that reality or not.

Love or cash? Honestly, it just comes down to a person's own internal compass. It’s all about what you value most. You see people crying about how things used to be, acting like that old-school way of life was some kind of golden era, but back then, money—or whatever currency actually meant something—was always at the top of the food chain. Now, women at least have the freedom to go out and actually feel something, you know? To trip out and believe they’re actually falling in love. In the old days, it wasn't even like that; you were basically being traded away for two head of cattle, a few pounds of gold, or a couple acres of farmland. It was a transaction, plain and simple.

Look, what you’re talking about—whatever it is you think you’re so disgusted by—isn't some genius concept we just cooked up on a whim in some boardroom; it’s a legacy. It’s a straight-up inheritance passed down through generations of pure survival instinct. We're talking about the fundamental drive for land, cold hard cash, gold, and the reality of putting romance on the back burner just to get ahead. It's built into our DNA.

Look, let’s get one thing straight: falling in love isn't actually about "love" at all. Most of the time, it’s just pure power plays, and honestly, nothing screams power quite like having a massive bank account. Money is the ultimate aphrodisiac—it's basic human nature. It’s nothing new, either; things haven't changed much since the days of the Roman Senate. It's always been this way.

I won't be surprised if you kill this thread or ban me.

You want this too, don't you? This whole letter is nothing more than a desperate cry for attention—a pathetic attempt to finally be noticed and maybe, just maybe, find someone out there who actually thinks like you do.

Do you even have a clue what marginalization actually means? I’m assuming you’re talking about it from a sociological perspective, anyway.

Honestly, you’re being pathetic right now. If it were up to me, I’d pass a federal law banning panhandling entirely. Instead of letting people just beg on street corners, we should be putting that energy into actual programs designed to get young, creative people like you off the streets and into productive careers.

Look, Noah Sanchez7, since tribal times, humans have had to live organized just to stay alive. The ways we organize ourselves just evolve as society gets more advanced.

It’s fine if you hate getting up, it’s fine if you’re lazy, and it’s even fine if you don't like living by the rules...that's just part of being young. But man, it's not okay to turn that into some deep philosophical manifesto. You can literally do work that doesn't require that kind of rigid structure; you could be a free artist and laugh at everyone else who has to deal with all that crap you don't. It's all about CHOICE, and it doesn't take nearly this much mental gymnastics or this much effort to feel bitter.

Maybe for some people it is. Again, we're talking about the right to choose. Show a little respect for the people around you and THEIR choices.

Since when did "McDonald's" count as an "upscale restaurant"????

Look, everyone lives their own life. And honestly, the answer to most of the questions you're throwing out in this thread really just comes down to how much someone is willing to accept the fact that LIVING has rules—rules that you absolutely HAVE to respect if you want to get anywhere.

Every single form of life has this perfect, built-in structure. Even the way everything connects in the food chain works flawlessly. It’s the same thing whether we're talking about a predator hunting in the Serengeti or some guy in Chicago putting on a tie and dealing with uncomfortable dress shoes. Humans TODAY are incredibly lucky because we have—and I am saying this for the millionth time—the POWER OF CHOICE.

- You can live like the masses, just another cog in the giant machine, thinking a little, working moderately, having enough to get by, and just surviving biologically.

- Or you can live like the minority, refuse to be part of that big machine, think more deeply, work harder, and have whatever amount you manage to pull in through your own setup—whether that's a little or a lot—and survive biologically.

- Or you can do nothing, stay out of the machine, have no real plan or organization, spit on everything, think a lot, work barely at all, have almost nothing, and—well, you don't survive biologically.

I'm genuinely curious here: why would you ever choose that third option, and what exactly is the "beauty" in living like that?
I'm about to relapse, please help! in Psychology ·
Hold on a second, I get everything you're saying, and look, I know former addicts deal with a massive amount of discrimination when they're trying to find work, but is the answer to shitty government support really just going back to using?

I mean, at the end of the day, this is your life and it's about your kid...

Isn't there any kind of job you can jump into right away? You sound smart and self-aware... surely there’s a way to retrain or even just go freelance... I don't know what you're into, but things like being a barber, a makeup artist, a tattoo artist, making jewelry, or photography... I'm just throwing stuff out there since I don't know you, but there HAS to be something where you don't have to walk around apologizing for your past.

Just try looking at this from a different angle for once.

Think about checking into a rehab center or a recovery program, and while you're doing okay, use that time to focus on retraining—if you need to, team up with someone else facing the same struggles and start a business together.

You actually learn stuff best when you're teaching it to someone else. Apply that logic here. Connect with people who need the same kind of help you do and tackle the problem TOGETHER. You can't just throw in the towel, not for yourself and definitely not for your kid.

Come on, let's hear some actual constructive ideas instead of all this "oh, woe is me" complaining. 😉
I'm about to relapse, please help! in Psychology ·
Look, as a mother myself, I totally get where you're coming from—I know you love that kid more than anything in this world and you genuinely want what's best for them in your own way.

But if we’re talking strictly professional, I honestly think you’re lucky they haven't snatched your child away yet, and I am dead set against any addict WHO EXPLICITLY REFUSES treatment getting even a shred of a chance at custody.

Have you actually sat down and asked yourself these things:

How much longer do you actually plan on being there for your child? Like, how much time do you have left in this life? You know damn well that drugs are cutting your lifespan short and every single morning is a gamble. Don't you want to be by their side ten years from now? Or fifteen?

Can't that much love be enough to motivate you to walk away from the drugs?

There is zero way to dodge a positive result during a surprise drug test in the long run. That’s literally why random testing exists; it isn't actually "random."

The only real way out is to get clean. In my opinion, the smartest move is to reach out to a social worker through Narcotics Anonymous to help you get sober, and while you're working through that, let your mom or grandma spend more time looking after your son.

I don't know if you've really processed this, but as a heroin addict, you aren't going to be able to handle the growing needs of a child for much longer.

It seems pretty obvious to me that you're mature and smart enough to grasp just how heavy this situation is—for your child, for your future relationship with them, and ultimately, for your own life.

There are ways to get clean, and from what I can see, there are plenty of people here who have been through it; don't take the easy way out, just fix the damn problem.

Stop making excuses to yourself about how you're "just normal on methadone"—that's total nonsense. Try putting this letter into perspective twenty years down the road: would you actually want your son to read this back then, and do you really think it would convince him of your "limitless love"?

Yeah, it’s nothing new, Noah Sanchez7. What do you think philosophers have been doing for centuries if not just spinning their wheels on this exact stuff?

But honestly, nobody’s actually come up with anything brilliant yet, and we probably won't as long as we're all stuck playing by society's rules just to keep our basic needs met.

If he just completely cut himself off from society, he wouldn't have any fears left, right? He’d just be vibing in his own hallucinations without a single worry or any pain involved.

That is exactly my point.
What you're calling the "social component" is actually a totally fluid concept that shifts depending on the era, much like what people decide counts as "normal thought" at any given time.

It all boils down to context...

It’s just like how we look at physiological changes—like brain structure, for example. You can label them as anomalies if you're looking through the lens of the "statistical majority," or you can see them as simple variations if you're looking through the lens of evolution.

Anonymous said:Schizophrenia isn't some foreign invader—it’s woven into the very fabric of the human experience. We like to label it a "disease" because, frankly, it scares us. By shoving it into a clinical box, we avoid the real work. We hide from it instead of learning how to actually harness it. The truth is, if you can stop being afraid, there’s an incredible potential there. It’s about finding a way to use that expanded perception rather than letting it swallow you whole. If you have the guts, you can tap into a different frequency—perceiving time differently, seeing things others miss, or connecting with perspectives that feel entirely otherworldly. But let's be real: you have to be incredibly brave to go down that road. And yeah, you probably need to be a little bit crazy, too.😉 .

Hey there! How’s it going?

Basically, a "disease" is just anything a person feels is hurting them or something they don't know how to use properly.

I’ve got some pretty similar thoughts 🙂 , it's just that with our current understanding of brain function, we can't prove—not even get close to proving—that the hallucinations tied to a specific diagnosis of schizophrenia are actually meaningful messages.

Those are sensitive assumptions that would make a scientist lose all their credibility, which is why nobody in the field dares to say it out loud.😈

But look—this is slightly off-topic, but not really—it's been proven that ancient temples were often built right over spots where psychoactive gases would seep out of the ground. Back then, the "prophetesses" would "hallucinate," and lo and behold, they actually managed to predict the future.

Even though the origins are different, hallucinations triggered by substances can be structurally identical to those caused by schizophrenia. People living with that diagnosis often experience what we might call an "awakened consciousness" naturally, and as for what they actually "see" or "hear," we can only guess.

The real tragedy is that these flashes of insight aren't seen as beneficial to society, and more importantly, they aren't beneficial to the individuals themselves because of how much pressure society puts on them.

Our prejudices toward the things that scare us will always outweigh our desire to actually understand them. That's why I think we won't fully explore schizophrenia—or any other psychosis—for a long time, at least not within our generation...

...and besides, Big Pharma has to make a living somehow... 😁

Harold Anderson3 said:That is absolutely spot on; she also dealt with physical abuse when she was growing up.
Does that mean I'm supposed to just 'look the other way' because of her past? Objectively speaking, life would be easier for both of us if we had a decent relationship, even though, if I'm being honest, I don't feel any personal urge to maintain a connection with her at all.

Look, this isn't about "looking the other way."
It’s about whether or not you can actually move past old situations and old dynamics.

You really only have two GOOD options here:

1. Shut the door and cut off all contact entirely.

2. Establish a polite, functional relationship—something appropriate to the situation—based on mutual interest.

Every other option—stuff like "we see each other but don't talk," "the silent treatment," "acting holy," "ignoring her," or "poking at her with petty little jabs"... those are all INFERIOR SOLUTIONS that ruin the vibe for EVERYONE, especially YOU, and they just bring unnecessary drama and tension.

So, either build a relationship based on mutual tolerance and respect (as much as is possible and as much as the other side is capable of giving), or just go your separate ways—which also comes with its own heavy price tag.

One thing you need to wrap your head around is that most people who act like that toward kids are absolutely UNCONSCIOUS of the fact that they did anything wrong.

I’m telling you, you aren't going to "enlighten" your stepmother, or even your father, or teach them a lesson now, because they are genuinely convinced they did their absolute best and that everything they did was for your own good.

All you need to realize is that in this country, "discipline through physical punishment" was basically part of the cultural fabric until very recently. A huge number of people over the age of 35 grew up dealing with being hit or belittled within their families; it's only recently that some of the younger generation of parents have actually woken up and realized how messed up that is.

Harold Anderson3 said:That’s exactly right. It isn't that my mother's love was missing, it just didn't really reach me because we were physically apart for so long. I'm not sure if I'm expressing this correctly, but I'm not exactly out there begging for affection; rather, I just feel that void through the mental health struggles I've been dealing with lately.
My mom's love is actually quite intense—one of her doctors even described her as being a very possessive parent. I love her dearly too, though I try to keep things within a healthy, normal boundary. So, a quick 😘 for my mom.
I find myself agreeing with most of what's been said above, though in my case, my father didn't just delegate some of the parenting duties to someone else; he handed off every single ounce of responsibility, literally.
And I certainly wasn't trying to suggest that a mother's love is somehow less important. As a kid, I spent so much time aching just to be near her, but now that I'm older, I'm just being practical. I've realized there's no sense in moving back home just because I love her so much. Honestly, given my current life with college and work, that would be a bit crazy.
On top of that, I'm at a total loss as to how to build a relationship with my father when he doesn't even believe me! I tried having an honest, heart-to-heart conversation with him about the serious internal struggles I'm facing, and his reaction was incredibly negative—he basically told me I was just acting out and running away from my responsibilities.
When I asked him why my grades suddenly plummeted in school, his response was essentially that I performed well when I was under control, but once that control was gone, I just lost interest.🙄 During a recent argument, he even claimed I was just wetting the bed out of pure spite... honestly, the man can't see past his heavy machinery at work, and when it comes to emotional intelligence—or the upbringing that should have provided it—he's pretty much at zero.👎

A few things here:

Are you living under his roof?
Are you financially dependent on him?

If the answer is yes, then look, you aren't going to get your act together until you move out and get your own space.

Also, like I mentioned before, I suggested you establish a relationship "toward your father" rather than "with him."

What that means is you set hard boundaries for how you act and talk to him, and you simply refuse to let him put you in positions where he can hurt you. Stop trying so hard to make him understand; don't even bother debating your problems with him. Trying to do that is just going to drag you deeper into the gutter.

I get that you're trying to "explain" things to him so he gets it, but that message isn't getting through. If he actually had any empathy or understanding, you wouldn't be posting all this right now. He physically cannot accept your reality because doing so would mean admitting his own failures, so stop expecting it.

Sure, it would be amazing if the roles were reversed and your dad actually realized what he did and apologized. That would give you the closure and relief you're looking for.
But unfortunately, those kinds of endings usually only happen in Hollywood movies.
Jealousy in Psychology ·
It’s actually pretty gutsy of you to admit that you’re feeling envious. Honestly, maybe that’s too harsh a word, because I don't think you actually feel that way toward everyone else.

The reason you see your former friend as physically "perfect" is just because modern American society hammers that specific image down our throats every single day. If we were living a few centuries ago, you’d be considered a total knockout, while those skinny types would have just been seen as looking sickly.

I honestly think you’re still just pissed off that she didn't make more room for you in her new life. The intensity of these negative feelings you're dealing with probably stems from the fact that back when you guys were close, you were essentially living out your own dreams through her—so her success felt like yours. Now that you aren't part of her world anymore, seeing her succeed hits differently because you're suddenly on the outside looking in.

It is high time you started actually living your own life instead of living this "life without your perfect friend."

Any physical flaws you think you have can be tackled if you’ve got the willpower—think gym sessions or diet—or you can just play it up with better clothes and makeup.

A ton of iconic people have actually turned their perceived flaws into a signature "personal style" that millions of people ended up copying later.

But hey, you already knew all that, didn't you?

When a relationship falls apart, you really need to sit down and figure out why it tanked and how much of that was on you. Relationships rarely fail just because of "looks"; it’s almost always about someone's temperament, their actual character, or just having totally wrong expectations.

If I were you, I'd just break your whole problem down into smaller pieces and tackle each one individually. That's usually the easiest way to find a way out.

Harold Anderson3 said:I really wanted to say thank you for such a thoughtful response. 😘 It’s clear you truly grasp how serious this all is, which is why your answer felt so deep and sincere.
In my case, things haven't quite escalated into outward actions yet; it has mostly stayed within my own head. Though, I suppose calling them "just" thoughts is a bit of an understatement, since they can be pretty overwhelming and make daily life feel much harder than it needs to be...
My relationship with my mom is actually really strong, and despite her illness, she makes sure I know she loves me. Sometimes that affection can feel a little intense or even exhausting, if I'm being honest, but it doesn't really bother me too much.
Long story short, I plan on taking all your advice to heart—I won't bore you by repeating every single point back to you—especially since you seem to really know what you're talking about here (am I right about that?🙂

Look, I don't want to bore you with too much detail—though let’s be real, I definitely will—but listen: that one sentence right there completely changes the entire landscape of the problem you're dealing with.

So, here’s the good news—something you already know deep down but haven't had the guts to actually call what it is for obvious reasons—you don't actually give a damn about this whole "parental love" concept, you're really just chasing the ghost of your father's approval and nursing that old wound from growing up without your mother around.

Look, we can all agree on the basics here—a father is just as vital to a kid's development as a mother is, and when you’ve got boys growing up, that father figure becomes absolutely critical during that phase where they're trying to figure out who they are and how they fit into the world.

So you're basically sitting there implying that a mother's love—which, let's be honest, is pretty much the ultimate thing—can actually get to be a bit much sometimes.

Look, if someone says they’re "suffering because they're being denied love," they aren't exactly claiming that anyone's affection is a burden to them. I’m telling you this just so you can actually aim your little "search" in the right direction for once.

It looks like that’s how things are playing out on your end:

Look, let’s just be real about it—my old man completely missed the mark when it came to my emotional needs. He just wasn't wired to actually see me or understand what I was going through on a deeper level. It wasn't even a conscious thing, he just lacked that basic awareness, you know? Like, if I was struggling or needed some actual support, he'd just tune it out or act like it wasn't happening. There was zero recognition of the emotional side of things, which honestly left a massive void because you expect your own father to at least grasp the basics of how you're feeling, but he just couldn't get there.

Look, let’s just be real about this: your old man completely dropped the ball when it came to actually showing up for you emotionally. He just wasn't there, you know? It’s like he was physically present in the room, but when it came to actually understanding what you were going through or giving you that support you needed, he was totally checked out. He failed to meet those emotional needs entirely, and honestly, that's a massive gap to deal with.

Look, you’re basically just acting like some sensitive kid who thinks getting a pat on the head from everyone else is the only way to feel like your own existence actually matters.
It’s pretty simple, really: you get what you deserve, whether that's love or whatever else life throws at you—and if things go south, well, that's just how it works. You earn it, or you don't. Simple as that.

I’m betting that when they started cutting back on the emotional support, they probably went ahead and stripped away all the praise and rewards too, if you ask me.

Maybe there was just way too much "objectivity" going on—or, if you ask me, just a whole lot of unnecessary nitpicking. Again, I'm just guessing here, but it felt like they were trying way too hard to be critical.

Look, my old man basically offloaded the responsibility of looking out for me onto someone else, and let’s be real, that person didn't give a damn either. They totally dropped the ball when I needed them to step up, which honestly just left me feeling completely abandoned by him.

So what we're looking at here is this young guy who’s basically walking around with this deep-seated chip on his shoulder because he’s convinced he just isn't "worthy," all because his old man failed to show him any real validation when it actually mattered.

Look, Mom’s love gets trashed from the jump by all these self-appointed "authorities"—you know, the ones throwing around heavy diagnoses and stripping away parental rights like it's nothing. You didn't consciously reject her, but you basically subconsciously filed her away as being "less important," when in reality, her presence was supposed to be a given.
Look, it’s just a normal kid reaction, so there's absolutely no reason to sit around beating yourself up or drowning in guilt over it, but you definitely have plenty of reasons to get your head straight and fix how you're looking at the situation.

Look, we really need to stop conflating two completely different things here; you can't just lump them all together and act like they're the same thing.
I’m not even talking about love in some vague, poetic sense—I'm talking about THIS specific kind of love and that constant, exhausting demand he has for me to prove my worth just to get his validation.

Everything I said before still stands, honestly. Just try to put more focus on actually getting to know yourself—like, really digging into who you are, what you're capable of, and where your actual potential lies. Once you figure that out, you just gotta go out there and actually make something of it.

That’s exactly how you build up a sense of security and self-respect—that deep-down feeling of actual purpose, where you finally feel like your existence and everything you do actually matters.

When you lose that sense of self-worth, that feeling that you actually matter or have a purpose in this world, that’s when you slide into depression. It’s pretty much always the root cause. Everything else—whatever specific disaster or bad day hits you—is just the trigger that sets the whole thing off.

Look, you need to get your head straight regarding your attitude TOWARD your old man, not just how you deal WITH him. There’s a massive difference there. Your internal perspective—the way you actually view him and the principles you're choosing to live by—is what you really need to grind on right now. Dealing WITH him involves actual interaction, and let's be real, you aren't emotionally stable or tough enough yet to handle that kind of direct back-and-forth. So, save the actual confrontation for later; focus on fixing your own mindset first.

In the meantime, just make sure you don't fall into that whole "seeking validation from your old man" trap—and honestly, you probably will hit that wall at some point, even if you aren't even on speaking terms with him anymore.

Look, if you’re actually still talking to your old man, you really need to just take him as he is. Stop wasting your energy mourning the version of him that exists in your head or nursing these massive, unrealistic expectations about how he should act. Just accept the reality of the situation, without all the extra drama.

Look, you really need to try and get a grip on how you react to people in charge, whether you’re sucking up to them or totally losing your mind on them. It’s getting a bit much. You have this tendency to swing wildly between extremes because, deep down, you treat every single authority figure like they’re some ultimate symbol—basically treating every boss or leader like they're your own damn father. You can't just see someone as a person with a job; you turn them into this massive, symbolic figurehead, and that's why your reactions go so overboard. Just dial it back and stop making everything so heavy.

I honestly don't doubt for a second that you'll move past all this before you know it.🙂

P.S.

Actually, I just went back and read that whole section on humiliation, physical abuse, and how they constantly belittle anyone's achievements, so I’m editing my post here.
I get that it's hard to wrap your head around right now, but people who act out like that—especially toward their own kids—have this really twisted psychological makeup, shaped by all the toxic social habits and experiences they grew up with. They were usually beaten, abused, and put down themselves... and so, anyone weaker than them becomes nothing more than a punching bag to help them feel some sense of "power and control" that they don't actually possess in the real world.

The absolute best thing you can do is just decide to be a decent, loving parent to your kids one day, effectively breaking the cycle and refusing to pass on everything that was done to you.

Funnygirl 🙂

Honestly, the best thing you did was seeing a doctor when you did. It’s a huge win.

Those thoughts you're dealing with? They're called "intrusive thoughts," and they usually come with those weird "compulsive actions." On the surface, they're just reflections of some irrational fears running wild in your head. With any luck, once you get yourself sorted out, they'll just fade away.

Look, you can't go back and manufacture parental love that wasn't there—though I am curious about where things stand emotionally between you and your mom. But you *can* compensate for it.

Right now, your main mission is building up some self-confidence. Focus on school or work first, and then, at the same time, really push yourself to socialize. You have to do this ON YOUR OWN. You’ve got to swallow that bitter pill and make a real effort to fit in with people.

For starters, stop telling yourself "I'm just different." That mindset is just a trap that keeps you from actually solving anything.

Because of how things went down, you basically grew up way too fast, which left you with a lot of catching up to do. You’re going to have to teach yourself how to give love and attention, breaking away from whatever model you were raised with, and trust me, that doesn't just happen by magic.

Talk to your doctor about finding some training in autogenic training. It's a solid way to learn how to fight back against those destructive thoughts that won't leave you alone and helps you actually take control of your mind and your actions.

Just so we're clear, autogenic training is a skill you learn; it's usually taught by psychiatrists or psychologists. Just look into where and how to find a program—it is EXTREMELY helpful.

Also, just a heads-up: you should expect to feel this "hunger for parental love" and this sense of "irreparable loss" whenever life hits a rough patch. You have to learn how to move past it and live with it.

If you want some real "therapy," try focusing your energy on caring for someone else. Given your age, maybe getting a pet would help, or even just stepping up and helping your mother more with whatever she needs.

One of the most proven "cures" for situational depression is PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
Pick a sport and stick to it—regularly, regularly, REGULARLY!!!

Diet plays a massive role in treating depression too. Avoid foods that might have hormones in them (like meat or soy), eat REGULARLY (this is huge), and drink TONS OF WATER.

You definitely need to talk to your doctor about how long you'll be on this treatment. From what I can tell, you're taking A LOT OF HEAVY MEDS, and those can become addictive if you're on them too long. Ask her if there's an alternative, like some form of psychotherapy that uses little to no medication. Either way, aim to get off the meds as soon as possible—in the long run, they often do more harm than good.

It's widely believed that the best medicine for people starving for love is actually the chance to give love themselves, since they have all this unspent affection built up inside them.

Think about it—maybe you could volunteer at a local foster care center or somewhere similar. A few kind words from you could mean the world to a kid who's in an even tougher spot than you are.

Hang in there. 👍
