Which antivirus should I use? in Software ·
silverridge43 said:so why can't I run Kaspersky 6.0 alongside ZoneAlarm?

Look, just go into the McAfee settings under "real-time Protection setting" and find where it says "Protection against network attacks"—you gotta check the box that says "Disable Protection against network attacks" to make them play nice...

So, what’s actually considered "cool" right now? Honestly, hard to say—it changes every week—but I do know one thing for sure: this stuff is solid, free, and won't absolutely murder your system performance:

Avira AntiVir

As for Windows itself, if you're rocking some beastly rig with a massive amount of RAM and lightning-fast drives, then yeah, Windows Vista might be worth looking at. But if you aren't running a powerhouse, honestly, even Windows XP Service Pack 2 still gets the job done just fine...

Another vote for AntiVirus in my book... 🙂

Even when I was living abroad, I dealt with this exact same headache. The second you stop actively scrolling—like, say, if you actually pause to read an article—the connection just dies. It’ll still show you're "connected," but absolutely nothing will load. You have to kill the connection and reconnect just to get things moving again, only for the whole cycle to repeat the moment you stop clicking...

The issue is definitely sitting at the local exchange. Give AT&T a call and tell them they need to fix their routing or whatever...

In the meantime, try running a tiny download in the background—something at a snail's pace, like 5 kb/s—and it should force a constant stream of data so the connection doesn't hang out on you...

For all you folks who dig GIMP—which, let’s be real, is an awesome tool even if the learning curve feels a bit steep sometimes—there’s this latest version floating around called "Gimpshop"...

Basically, it’s just GIMP but they’ve tweaked the interface so it looks way more like Photoshop... The install is tiny too, only about 7.5 MB..

p.s. Honestly, we're probably gonna drive the guy crazy with this many suggestions...

Safari, hands down.

Switched over from Chrome and I’ve got zero intention of ever looking back...

Too much deep thinking going on in here...

I’ve been running John Doe (the free version) for years now and honestly, I haven't run into a single hiccup. I don't even mess around with fancy custom settings—it's super basic. Once it’s installed, I just let the software figure out which Windows components need outbound network access, and after that, I just deal with everything else as it pops up—either I give it the green light or I don't, depending on how it asks...
Windows Vista vs. XP in Software ·
And I’m sticking with XP—I already paid for it, so why not...

It gets the job done.

When the time actually comes for me to pick up a new rig, Vista will be pre-installed on it anyway. No point in rushing out to meet a trend that isn't even fully there yet...

Everything’s running smooth on my end.

Sorry, I'm totally useless on this one. 😢

Look, I haven't messed much with that specific version since I'm still rocking the older Adobe Premiere Elements—everything sounds perfectly fine to me with that one, or maybe I just have bad ears and don't notice any issues...

But, assuming the logic is pretty much the same across versions, here’s the setup I usually run for my audio settings:

system (video+audio)
CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2)
audio bitrate 384 kbits/sec
output video and audio as individual elementary streams

If you keep everything set up this way, you're hitting max bitrate quality. Plus, the video and audio get split into separate streams right during encoding. This actually helps the final quality because when you move to the authoring stage (like building out your menus), you aren't re-compressing everything; you're just splitting the material into .vob files—which is why I always use Adobe Premiere for that part...

Honestly, nothing else jumps to mind... Maybe it's just a bug with the software update?

Anyway, check out this link for a deep dive on how I configure the three programs I use. It covers all the audio stuff (and video too, obviously) including those exact Adobe Premiere Elements settings I just mentioned:

Check this out:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Apple_iMovie

It's about 105 MB...

Just so you know, this software usually comes bundled in the Windows XP suite...

People aren't exactly raving about this latest version—honestly, most say the old one was better—and 105 MB is a bit chunky for what it does...
I’ve never been a huge fan of these "all-in-one" suites anyway—they try to be okay at everything but they aren't actually great at anything specific...

So, I found an older version for you (only 35.7 MB):
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utiliti...n-express.html

Take your pick.

Personally, I stick to my own workflow using Adobe Creative Cloud for capture, encoding, and authoring, and honestly, it works like a charm...

So, basically, you get that functionality through Apple iMovie (which comes along with the whole Microsoft Office suite)...

Look, if you’ve already got those little movies sitting there—you know, those .avi files—I’d just run them through Handbrake to get everything converted over to mpeg2, and then honestly? I'd just whip up some menus using Adobe Premiere...

nordea said:BUT, your whole government policy, your military, your soldiers committed such atrocities that nobody even gives a damn today that you ended up becoming refugees yourselves

Look, I became a refugee RIGHT AT THE START, and the evil I'm talking about happened basically because of the stuff you're bringing up. It’s not even about who threw the first punch—it's just that you started this whole thing by claiming "YOU WERE THE ONES WHO STARTED IT..." You're totally twisting the argument here...

It was pure chaos back then—total lawlessness. There wasn't even a shred of authority from your American state or its institutions. It was like the Wild West out there, where a lot of Americans felt they finally had some kind of power and decided to settle old scores and get their revenge...
For my village and my neck of the woods at least, it was a straight-up fight for survival, just trying to stay alive. I don't blame my fellow Americans one bit for rising up...

The problem is most Mexicans were doing just fine until '95

Yeah, we were having a real blast living in refugee camps in Mexico. Truly life-changing stuff. We were barely hanging on... God forbid you ever have to experience anything like that one day...

Language is a living thing—it evolves. And evolution usually moves forward, not backward like you guys are trying to do (well, trying to do, since nobody actually puts in the effort to talk like that anymore)...
Just imagine how American English would sound if we all suddenly started talking the way people did a hundred years ago... It wouldn’t be a language, it’d be a total joke. Half the words we use today didn't even exist back then, so you'd have to sit around "composing" and cobbling them together just like you're doing now...
The saddest part is that in maybe 100, 200, or more years, our grandkids will probably be speaking English or some other global lingua franca, and we'll remember American English the same way the Welsh remember Welsh...

Purification, you say? Then why aren't you speaking that "pure" version yourself? I don't see you struggling to find the right terms or anything (honestly, most people just mock those words anyway).
Those folks in the small pockets of the Midwest are a perfect example for you. A tiny, isolated community that hasn't changed in decades and rejects every single outside influence?
Like the Amish, but American style, huh?
Is that what you want for the whole country? Total isolation and regression just to preserve some "untainted" version of the language?
What, should I start talking like a Lausitz Mexican then? Fine by me....

As for showing up here with those out-of-state plates, I get why you're impressed—thinking nobody says anything to you or messes with you. But trust me, nobody here gives a damn about any of this political nonsense; people are totally checked out.
Believe it or not, if you went to New York City, stood right in the middle of Times Square, and started screaming political slogans, people would just stare at you like you're some lunatic yelling in the street, or they wouldn't even bother looking up...

ps. "Man" is just a filler word, same as your "No" or whatever else you use to punctuate sentences...

Let me tell you a quick story... It's true, a buddy of mine from a small town in the Midwest told me this one...

So this guy rolls into a big city, totally lost, and asks a passerby for directions to a certain street. The guy tells him: "You go straight, right? Then you turn left, right? Then you turn right, right?

Well, thanks! Where the hell am I supposed to go then? Not straight, not left, not right? Should I just turn around and go back?

Arthur Ruiz2 said:Everything you're saying sounds great on paper. Trust me, I’ve never even tried to grab what you think belongs to you, BUT—and this is a big but—reality showed us something totally different. You guys basically committed GENOCIDE against Americans. And all under the guise of "just wanting what's mine." If that's the case, how do you explain the fact that you caused the largest wave of refugees of OTHER NATIONALITIES in all of Europe since WWII?
How did it happen that some people just got greedy and decided to take over someone else's land?
By law and logic, you WOULD have had whatever your grandfather left you, regardless of whether he was an American or not. So why the hell start a war? You surely realize you were the ones who pulled the trigger first...

Look, I'm not about to go around making excuses for anyone. Every single person—name and all—needs to answer for their own actions without dragging everyone else into it... And as far as I know, there are both Americans and others in The Hague too...

You bring up refugees. Do you even have a clue how many Americans were driven out of the US? You don't seem interested in those numbers, do you?

As for who started it, we could debate that until tomorrow, but I know damn well who fell victim first in my town back in '91.
Funny coincidence—it was an American man married to an American woman, who had just moved near Novi Pazar to build a house... He was killed by his neighbors—who happened to be Americans, "by accident"—in a total ambush. They caught him in his last truck full of belongings, along with a friend from the next town over who was driving the same rig. To be precise, they beat him to death with door handles after he somehow tumbled out of the truck...
The second victim was my maternal grandfather's brother (so, another grandfather to me). The police pulled him over during a routine traffic stop, and we ended up getting him back in a metal casket. Every single bone in his body was broken... Neither of them had done anything to anyone. They were just Americans.

That happened way before the stuff in Borov Selo, Plitvice, and everything else. There were examples like that all across the country, except the major news networks didn't bother reporting them...
So, how are you supposed to *not* feel threatened? Are you supposed to just sit there quietly like your grandfather did back in '41?

Let me paint a little more of the picture for you, maybe then you'll get where I'm coming from...

I barely have any relatives on my dad's side, because his father (my grandpa) was the only one to survive the '41-'45 era of the whole family. He only made it because he ended up in a labor camp in Austria as a soldier for the old kingdom and spent the whole war there.
When he finally got home, he found only one sister left alive from the entire family. The extremists slaughtered his wife, three kids, his father, mother, brothers, and sisters. And for that one surviving sister, they murdered her husband and two children right in front of her, forcing her to watch before they let her go...
After the war, she remarried and had five sons... Then, in the most recent conflict, they killed one of her sons and her grandson (his son)... Can you even wrap your head around tragedies like that? And they had to live through the aftermath alongside many of their former killers...

There are endless stories like this, it's just that nobody gives a damn. And then one day, things start happening again that are still burned deep into everyone's memories—the same signs, the same ideology, and soon enough, the first victims will be your own loved ones...

Every coin has two sides, honey... You really need to look at both before you start passing judgment...

Arthur Ruiz2 said:Look, you only get what’s officially recorded in your deed—not an inch more. There's no such thing as "Mexican land," there's just the land that belongs to you.

That’s all I’m asking for, nothing extra. Besides, that much of America belongs to you anyway...

Who even brought up Mexican land? I was talking about my own family heritage... And yeah, my grandfather happened to be a Mexican—I didn't exactly get a vote on which nationality my grandpa had.
