Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:The thing is, deals and prices shift daily, so stuff might be out of stock or priced differently by tomorrow.
The Mbo is a decent swap. That monitor is fine, though I guess it feels a bit overpriced for a TN panel, but at least it’s got FreeSync and a 24" screen, which justifies the cost somewhat. I hope she actually gets to game on this rig 😁 (since the purpose wasn't mentioned anywhere), because it's built like a balanced gaming PC, given the whole topic of the thread.

Yeah, it'll be her gaming setup. I'll probably get the green light once in a while to play some games myself, and once I save up enough cash, I'll be back here to build a real gaming rig for me. 😁

Something slightly cheaper $2333 to save some cash (online price).

The CPU is basically the same as an I5 4460, just more efficient (actually maybe a tiny bit faster if you look at benchmarks)

The power supply is noticeably cheaper than Cooler Master (about a third less), similar quality and wattage, it just lacks modularity and the 5-year warranty. It's up to you what you want, though it should fit fine.

Skip the power strip if it isn't necessary.

The case comes with 2 fans; you could probably just run one in the back to get airflow, so nothing else needs adding. If they like the look of it, then okay—it's a decent case and the price isn't terrible.

You could put that extra budget toward a premium rx 480 model, like an MSI Gaming version—the difference might be better noise levels, better overclocking, and cooler temps. For a bit more money, the $13 SSD could be upgraded to an MX300 275GB, which is a better drive, but the current one has a 5-year warranty so think about it. IMO, the Samsung 850 is overpriced (even if it is arguably the best consumer SATA SSD). If it's available, maybe an MSI B150M Bazook plus motherboard would work too. Generally, prices aren't bad (at least for what I picked), it's just that the GPU is a little pricier here than elsewhere.

*I hope her monitor has a digital output—HDMI or DVI (meaning it's not just VGA only).

I'll take your suggestion into account and approve it, thanks for the recommendation. 😁 We're picking up the PC this Friday, so I hope everything works well. 😁 The only thing we had to swap was the motherboard (since that PRO4 wasn't available, nor was the Bazooka Plus), so we went with this ASUS B150M-A/M.2, Intel B150, DDR4, SATA, M.2, PCI-E, G-LAN, D-Sub, HDMI, DVI-D, audio, USB 3.0, mATX, socket 1151.

And we ended up getting this monitor.

Timothy Kim60 said:The processor socket and motherboard don't match (1150 vs 1151). And you don't need a Z series board if you aren't planning on overclocking. You could just grab an Intel Core i5-6400 paired with a decent B150 motherboard instead.

Get that Modecom power supply out of there immediately. It makes zero sense to spend extra money on $200 a questionable unit like that. If you want modularity, just get this; you'll get a better PSU and a 5-year warranty. Though, I guess Links is a bit pricey if you're paying cash. For the price of that 480, you could probably snag msi gaming which is a top-tier AMD Radeon RX 480 model

.

I definitely don't need overclocking. 😁 But then the question is, which B150 motherboard would actually be okay for this setup? As for Links, she picked them because it's her computer—she’s using her own cash, her own choice, so I guess I just have to deal with it and shut up. 😁

I agree regarding the power supply. I've looked at those Cooler Master units before. This one in the build was recommended to me, so I just went with it, I suppose. 🙂

So, am I supposed to overclock this thing too? Well, the BIOS actually has that option available, so I guess I'll just go ahead and do that then. 🙂

Timothy Kim60 said:That Corsair unit is basically a luxury spacecraft compared to that Microsoft one. It’s leagues ahead in quality, I guess. If you actually care about the details for your Microsoft setup, the Corsair is worth just about anything. Whatever.

I guess you don't really need 12GB of RAM for gaming. Maybe.

Yeah, I read that article you posted. I had no idea those kinds of power supplies were even an option, I guess. 🤔 Well, I guess that was taken into consideration, so I'll probably just end up going with that Corsair.

I guess I'll probably need at least 8 GB of RAM to handle current titles and whatever comes next. Plus, I really want to run GTA V without all that stuttering, even if I have to settle for low settings.
crimsonstag84 said:That alone won't fix the stuttering. I guess it might reduce the hitching a bit and maybe squeeze out some extra FPS, but that's about it.

With my current setup, I’m barely hitting 40 FPS when things get heavy. I play Dota 2—which is moving over to that Reborn update—so I already know what's coming. During a big fight, I'll drop from 50 FPS down below 30 and the whole thing just starts stuttering. Without the Reborn stuff, I could maybe hold a steady 50, but since Dota 2 is transitioning, I doubt I'll be able to play it properly at all. That's why I'm looking into an upgrade. 😁 I'm just trying to figure out how to get my other games running at a decent resolution. I guess. Maybe if I can actually improve the picture quality. 🙂

Alright, I have more questions. Why would I need a better power supply? 😁 I mean, isn't 400W enough? 🤔
And another thing regarding the RAM. I was thinking about grabbing a dual kit, maybe this or this since I read that having matching sticks is supposedly better. That would work for now, I guess, but I'm wondering if I eventually upgrade to 2x8GB RAM, will it even work with my current motherboard, or should I just plan on upgrading the whole board later on?
PC Upgrade Ideas in Desktops ·
The power supply is an EVGA 550W ATX, but I'm a bit stuck on the graphics card. 🤣 Since I bought this PC pre-built, I didn't get any of the original boxes—my mistake, I guess 🤦—so now I'm seeing conflicting info about the GPU. I listed it as an NVIDIA GeForce GT Series above because that's what shows up when I boot, but there's a sticker on the card itself that says HD7770 1G GDDR5 PCI-E, which is pretty confusing. 😵
PC Upgrade Ideas in Desktops ·
Alright, here’s what I'm running right now.

Intel Core i3
NVIDIA GeForce GT Series 1Gb
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NSB0 SATA CdRom Device 500Gb
Kingston 4GB RAM
MSI MS7721 A78M-E35 AMD A78 FM2+ M/B
550W power supply

So, I want to upgrade this thing because some games are lagging, and I guess I need to swap out a few parts. First off, I'm planning on getting more RAM, but I have no clue which GPU would actually work with my current motherboard to make sure everything stays compatible. 🙂
Basically, I need advice on RAM, a new graphics card, and maybe a power supply. That's about it.
Thanks for any help.

neonfox12 said:The double standards were all directed at mistyhound94, who’s constantly filing reports and starting these petty arguments. I actually pointed out exactly how he does it over in that thread in the banned users section. It happens all the time, but I just haven't felt like reporting such nonsense. Maybe it's time I start...

I mean, you’re on my ignore list for a reason, but I still found myself reading this. You’re just lecturing everyone and acting like some victim, trying to demand justice for yourself. I guess you feel so pushed around in this chat that you have to start shouting just to prove how "unfair" everything is.
Let's just start over from square one.

First off, I don't get any special treatment here, nor have I ever. I’ve taken my fair share of warnings for my own mistakes, and I didn't complain because I knew exactly what I did and why I did it. I don't have any protection from the moderators, nor have I ever asked for it. I don't need it.

Look, I’m not out here starting fights. Just because I occasionally get dragged into a heated argument doesn't mean my goal is to pick fights or stir the pot. Honestly, I'm just fed up with people constantly showing up and getting on my nerves with their endless comments and provocations. Sure, maybe I used to be like that too, but I don't see any point in it anymore.

Thirdly, you’re indirectly calling me a coward again—just say it, honestly, nobody's going to come after you for being blunt about what you actually think. I guess I'll just report it (since I'm such a snowflake, apparently), and let the mods decide if that warrants a penalty. I also know perfectly well you weren't just joking around, given our history of fighting, so you definitely deserved that strike for calling me a pathetic loser. And as for this claim that I'm constantly filing reports... that's just not true. Unless you somehow have access to my private reports, how could you possibly be so sure? Lying isn't healthy.

Fourthly, let’s be honest here. You’re one of those people who just brings constant friction to the chat by constantly trolling and acting like you're some kind of intellectual superior to everyone else—including me. You've been relentlessly trying to push your own views as if they're the only absolute truth. You always have to contradict me, too, basically trying to force your perspective down my throat. Look, I’ve built my own worldview and gained my own experience in my own way. Just because what I say doesn't sound logical or "right" to you doesn't mean it isn't valid for me, and I've learned to live with that. But you? You just kept coming into this chat to lecture me, trying to teach me what you think is correct, and whenever I pushed back, you just kept insisting I "didn't get it." Honestly, if you can't convince an adult about something, maybe just give it a rest and accept it as part of how they live. Just leave it alone. Go live your perfect little life where you're the expert on everything—the guy who's seen it all, knows it all, and is better than everyone else—but stop trying to force that path onto everyone else. It's exhausting.

So, are you going to keep messing with me using those pathetic little jabs? Go ahead, please. I’m sure I’ll see them quoted somewhere later. If that happens, I might just be a coward and report the posts for harassment. Maybe you should just learn to accept how things work, or better yet, just don't say anything at all if you aren't prepared to face the consequences of your subtle insults. If I decide to hit back, I honestly don't care if I get a warning, a ban, or a partial suspension. At least I’ll own it instead of playing the victim like this.

That's all I've got to say about that. Over and out. ☕

Why are Gillette razors so expensive? in Miscellaneous ·
I guess those old-school Wilkinson blades aren't actually that pricey, and they're good enough.
velvetmoose9 said:I’m totally with you on that one—there’s definitely a certain love affair between knees and solid concrete. Honestly, if you've ever spent a long afternoon kneeling around on a subfloor trying to get something just right, you know exactly what I mean. It's that satisfying feeling of having a surface that doesn't budge an inch under your weight, even if it does leave you feeling a little creaky by dinner time. There’s nothing quite like the stability of a rock-solid foundation when you're deep in the middle of a project.
Honestly, you’ve gotta go to the doctor with a specific game plan. Don't just show up and wait for them to tell you what to do. You need to walk in there with actual, targeted questions—things like, "Look, what can I do on my own to fix this?" or "What steps can I take right now to at least slow down the progression?" It’s much better to be proactive about it.
If it turns out to be that benign variant—which, honestly, is looking like the most likely scenario—you’ll probably just be prescribed some anti-inflammatories to take whenever you need them. I always tell people it’s worth being pretty proactive with those pain meds during an acute flare-up, too. It sounds a bit counterintuitive to some, but there's actual logic to it: every single time that inflammation kicks in, it triggers a little more scarring. Just picture what happens when you keep adding layers of unnecessary tissue inside your knee joint; eventually, you're just crowding the space with stuff that shouldn't be there, which totally messes with how the joint actually moves. Taking those anti-inflammatories really helps dial back that whole process so you aren't just building up extra junk in there.
If you end up getting some hands-on physical therapy, honestly, there’s zero point in just going through the motions while you're on the table. You really want to soak up those exercises so you can actually keep doing them at home once you're cleared. If I were you, I'd just pull the therapist aside and ask them straight up—like, "Hey, what are the absolute essentials I should keep doing on my own after I finish my sessions here?" It's way better to get the inside scoop from the pros on what'll actually stick long-term.

I just need to get this sorted ASAP because the pain is getting worse, and the clicking in my knee is happening more often now, which worries me. I didn't pay much attention to it before, but back when my knee wasn't quite seated right, a sudden movement to the side popped it back into place with a loud click. 🤦 Now I'm reading these articles and seeing stuff, and I'm starting to worry that I might have been making things worse just by going about my daily routine. 😢
And it looks like I'll have to drop at least 30 pounds, if not more, to take the pressure off my knees since I can't stand for long, let alone walk. I'm heading to the doctor tomorrow, so we'll see what they say. Thanks for the info. 👍
velvetmoose9 said:Yeah, carrying extra weight can definitely mess things up. And honestly, sitting way too much is just as bad—especially if you're sitting with your legs locked out straight, crossing them at the knees, or even just constantly sitting with one leg tucked under you.
That being said, none of that is necessarily the whole story or even the main culprit for everyone... Not getting enough movement or just having a totally inactive lifestyle fits right into the mix too... Plus, there's always the genetics factor... That plays a role more often than people think.

Out of all those factors, I'd say my weight (around 6'0" and 210 lbs), being inactive, and sitting way too much are the main culprits. I should probably add that I used to play soccer on concrete courts all the time, which might have trashed my knees given how hard that surface is. I didn't really think twice about it then, and now I'm paying for it. I'll likely head to my doctor to see if they think it's serious enough for a specialist. 😢
I’m dealing with similar knee issues myself, so I guess I'm wondering just how much weight gain or sitting around too much can actually mess things up.

rustydrifter10 said:Look, you're being unfair. Admins and mods don't have some sacred privilege when it comes to changing signatures—at least, not in the way you're painting it. The option to edit signatures was actually disabled for everyone on the forum. It’s just that certain moderation tasks are handled through a separate moderator panel that still has that feature enabled. Not even all the mods have access to it; only a select few. This isn't about special treatment; it's just how the vBulletin technical settings are configured.

I guess... maybe that was just how things worked until recently, because from what I've seen, mods and admins were able to change signatures for themselves or others upon request. 🙂

Actually, I could say the exact same thing about what's wrong with this forum. It’s not right that the owner hasn't shown up here in a long, long time. It's not right to add an unwanted "Like" button just to promote the site on Facebook while the actual forum is breaking, lagging, and losing features—like the ability to edit posts. And it's definitely not right that they're ignoring the current issue where posts are being displayed alphabetically instead of chronologically. Yesterday, I replied to someone in the same minute, yet my response appeared before their original post. It's just not right that the owner at Anderlon makes a decent living off us, but won't invest back into this platform to help it grow. It seems he's only interested in applying quick patches, and I'm honestly just waiting for more features to be stripped away, like avatars or image hosting.

vBulletin has plenty of options, and I've seen many other forums using it that are far superior to this one—even if they are international sites. The real issue is how much effort the people running this forum and the servers are actually putting in. Don't take this as a personal attack or anything; I know you're trying your best to answer everyone and explain things, but I think you admins really need to talk to Anderlon about the state of this place. A lot could be fixed, if there was any actual will to do it.
Signature Permissions... no, no, no, etc... wtf?! in Forum Help! ·
It’s all about that "Like" button, I guess. The mods and admins act like they're untouchable royalty here, holding all the power to change signatures while us regular folks get absolutely nothing. So go ahead, maybe "like" this forum if you want to help them recruit more people. 👋
