They could always just claim they were being totally irrational—as long as they release their recordings as evidence.

Then again, they can always just play the "I don't remember anything" card.

Paul Sanders5 said:Honestly, screw Odyssey. And I’m saying that as someone who has binged basically every sci-fi flick ever made—it’s my absolute favorite genre, the only one worth watching.

It’s just like when people talk about Kumam; you say you dig those movies and suddenly you’re some kind of ultimate authority with the "correct" taste.

There are plenty of movies out there, just like there are plenty of women—stop being picky and watch everything. Life’s too short.

I honestly think *2001: A Space Odyssey* appeals more to people who aren't exactly die-hard sci-fi fans, and honestly? I get it. Kubrick basically used the whole genre as a playground for his own formalistic and philosophical experiments. He wasn't exactly sweating the details of the novel's plot or worrying about whether the world-building felt grounded and believable. Personally, I thought that worked brilliantly, but then again, I’ve never been much of a sci-fi person anyway.

Paul Sanders5 said:Heading to see Avengers tonight. Honestly? It’s all just massive marketing hype at this point—nothing but mindless blockbusters.

So, you’re going to give us the play-by-play so we don't actually have to sit through the whole thing ourselves? Honestly, that sounds like a much better plan. Why waste the time watching when I can just get the highlights from you? 🍿
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
I can't quite remember if blockbusters were always this trash, but it’s getting pretty obvious that these massive, hundred-million-dollar productions are mostly just disposable junk. They’re built to be consumed and forgotten, right? Luckily, there’s still a ton of other stuff being made out there—different genres, different vibes. At least nowadays, we have enough access to actually decent movies and series that we aren't forced to rely on whether or not someone decides to churn out another mediocre superhero flick.
Offside Chat Archives (2014-2021) in Soccer ·
Serialization is the big trend right now, isn't it? Comic books basically hand studios ready-made scripts and built-in fanbases on a silver platter. On top of that, in these massive franchises, one movie essentially functions as a feature-length commercial for the next installment; it’s all just part of this giant, self-sustaining marketing machine. If you sat through Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2, you’re probably going to show up for Avengers 3, or some inevitable "Iron Man vs. Captain America 2" nonsense. It makes it pretty much impossible for any single entry to be an unexpected flop when they're all tethered together like that.

Jessica Gonzalez said:I wanted to pick your brains on something since there are plenty of smart people here. I was reading that some "Avengers" movie pulled in $600 million in just two days, and honestly, I wouldn't go see it even if someone offered to pay for my ticket ten times over. I happened to catch Iron Man 3 a few years back when it was breaking records, and I just couldn't wrap my head around it. To me, it felt like two hours of nothing happening without any real logic—kind of like watching a mediocre soccer player try to dribble through a defense. Afterwards, I saw reviews where grown men with full beards were giving it perfect scores. It’s hard to even call it a movie; it felt like two endless, boring hours that left me with zero lasting impressions. I've seen hundreds of films, from absolute masterpieces to total garbage, but I just don't get this.

They seem more like cartoons for kids, so why do adults follow them so fanatically into theaters? What is actually interesting about them? I'm asking because I genuinely don't understand, almost as if I'm living on a different planet than the people who write about these things as if they are cinematic achievements.

Honestly, why do adults obsess over rooting for the Dallas Cowboys? There’s a special kind of madness out there for everyone, I guess.

restlesssurfer97 said:So, who exactly are these "leftists with flowers in their hair"? It’s funny how whenever someone mentions a "champagne socialist," everyone suddenly gets all worked up about it.

I mean, wasn't it actually guys like Linchenko making backroom deals with his buddies from big corporations during his time in office?

Seriously though, who counts as a leftist and who counts as a religious conservative in this mess?

The ones who actually picked our pockets were the former communists who just rebranded themselves as Democrats or moderate conservatives back in the early 90s. They weren't actually committed to any ideology, they were just crooks.

I'm honestly sick of people constantly picking sides between the far-left and the far-right, or arguing over old Civil War leftovers. When is this cycle ever going to end?

Go ask Justin James10; he brings them up in basically every single thread.

We were all swindled by those old-school socialists who flipped their allegiances to become "moderate democrats" back in the early 90s. They weren't actually socialists, and they sure as hell aren't democrats now—they’re just con artists.

Can we please stop with the endless bickering between the far-left and the far-right? This constant fighting between the old guard and the radicals... when is it ever going to end?

I'm with you on that.

Justin James10 said:While Americans bicker about religious extremists or the mafia in Slovakia and whatnot, everyone else has already moved past us. All that's left is Bulgaria. 🙏

The average American still makes jokes about the Czech Republic, even though they're practically a superpower compared to us.

In our supposedly "great" nation, the privatization scams and the absolute wreckage of the state were orchestrated by those ultra-conservative types, not some hippies with flowers in their hair. Let's be real: the leftists are basically irrelevant here; it’s the right-wing crowd that actually ran the con.

brightpilot6 said:Good grief, who on earth are you talking to? In the last decade, I haven't heard a single soul making jokes about the Czech Republic's economy.

PS

And honestly, a massive round of applause for those scheduling spreadsheets; whoever came up with that deserves a Nobel Prize in Bureaucracy.🙏

The same goes for those vehicle usage logs, especially since the government already accounts for those expenses through flat-rate tax deductions anyway.🙏

The sheer amount of red tape is all thanks to the EU's influence on global standards.

restlesssurfer97 said:Look, I actually run my own little side hustle, and honestly, there hasn't been a single week since I started where I haven't felt some level of regret about it. And before you even ask why I don't just shut the whole thing down, let me tell you that anyone who has ever tried to navigate the world of small business in America knows exactly why that’s easier said than done.

btw, I’ve actually scaled things to the point where I could pretty much automate the expansion year after year, but I just don't have the desire or the mental energy to go out and start fighting windmills all over again. We're talking micro-entrepreneurship here, and instead of actually focusing on the work I love, I end up spending hours upon hours every single day drowning in paperwork. And yeah, I'm definitely not playing strictly by the book, because if I didn't, I wouldn't get a day off for months at a time, considering I'm pulling 15-hour shifts regularly. But I still have to maintain these logs in spreadsheets, capping everything at a max of 8 hours, logging when I worked, marking my days off 😂 And please, don't even get me started on "management contracts"—of course there are plenty of "legal solutions" for all this stuff here in the States, but if I actually utilized every single one of those official loopholes, I'd be left with absolutely nothing. I'd be broke.
Luckily, I manage to pull in enough income from other ventures and international sources that I can play around with actual cash, rather than dealing with the pennies I'd be left with here if I had to cover every single living expense through local means.

ps. Just to be clear, we're talking small-scale income and minor operations here, so nobody gets the wrong idea and thinks I'm out here running some massive corporation or making millions; I'm really just doing this to keep food on the table.

In some other country, with the amount of energy and grit I put into this, I would have secured a more than decent lifestyle a long time ago. And yeah, I actually think about it, because I know people who have just straight-up bailed on working in this backwater part of the country, though it isn't exactly an easy call to make. Okay, maybe not just this specific corner of the US, because there are other places that feel like the "West" to us but are actually even worse when it comes to certain things. Specifically, Italy.

So, I went looking for restlesssurfer97's company 👋

Justin James10 said:If Americans want such laws, then where is the issue, friends? 🤷 Why shouldn't the forces of some massive international alliance step in to prevent these kinds of ideological shifts? 🤷

Oh sure, let's ignore the GDP and instead focus on... what? Some vague, intangible feeling of leftist influence? 🤷

Can you actually teach leftists how democracy works? 🕺

You're basically fighting ghosts in your own head.

Justin James10 said:Look, we all know exactly who was behind the blast, and yet the media still refuses to address the reality here in America: journalists getting caught up in explosions just a few hundred yards from the heart of the government, and somehow, it goes completely unpunished. Why does the full truth of that case remain buried?

Lately, it seems like the trendy thing to do in liberal circles is to constantly harp on about how backwards and Catholic Poland is. Sure, they say it's "stuck in the past," but how can they claim that when a country like Poland is actually leading the way in so many areas compared to us? 🙏

What "liberal circles" are we even talking about here? And what "mantras"? Look, Poland is a Catholic state, plain and simple. You can't just obsess over a country's GDP while they're actively moving toward banning abortion entirely—including cases where the fetus has severe abnormalities. It doesn't quite add up, does it?

Justin James10 said:Pukanić and Franić were blown up by a bomb right in the heart of the capital city.😉

They’re calling for resignations because it was such a massive shock to them, whereas here, nobody even gives it a second thought. That said, investigative journalism in the States has practically vanished. Who would actually want to go up against our local organized crime syndicates?

Calling Pukanić an "investigative journalist" is a bit of a stretch, isn't it? To me, he was more like a guy who was deeply embedded in a web of shady characters and organized crime syndicates. It’s hard to look at him through that lens when you consider how much overlap there was between his work and those circles. Look at what happened in Slovakia—that reporter under thirty gets taken out along with his fiancée. It's tragic, obviously. And no, I’m not sitting here suggesting one life holds more value than another; we all know that's nonsense. My point is simply that the Pukanić situation is far too tangled and layered to be dismissed as just another "journalist murdered" headline. It's much messier than that.

brightpilot6 said:The point isn't about celebrating the violence against reporters over there, but rather acknowledging that the public consciousness is actually sharp enough to drive massive protests into the streets. Is it really all just a pattern, or are we ignoring the fact that people are finally standing up?

Look, let's be real for a second. You don't just see 45,000 people flooding the streets of Chicago over the murder of a journalist and suddenly demanding the entire administration resign. In a functioning democracy, the government isn't held responsible for a single criminal act like that—unless, of course, everyone assumes they were pulling the strings. It’s pretty obvious someone is working overtime behind the scenes to stir up this kind of unrest.

Justin James10 said:Oh, I’m watching, believe me—and by comparison, we look like a developing nation. Seriously, compared to them, we’re practically stuck in the dark ages regarding infrastructure!

All this "it's just how things are in Eastern Europe" talk—claiming that because journalists get killed and organized crime runs rampant in places like Slovakia, it makes us equal? What have you been sleeping through for the last twenty-plus years? 👏 In our neck of the woods, nobody even bats an eye when stuff like that happens because, unfortunately, it’s become the status quo.

Look, I’m not some kind of idiot who’s going to sit here and gloat over a journalist being killed in any country just because we're having a debate on a forum. But I find it hard to believe a nation is doing fine when 45,000 people take to the streets demanding the resignation of the administration over a reporter's death. There is something fundamentally broken under the surface there.

So, which journalist was killed in the States? If it's truly "business as usual," why don't you give me a few names.

Justin James10 said:What are the population counts for Estonia and Slovakia? 🍿

Honestly, it feels like Poland is basically turning into a fourth Reich, while we remain this incredible oasis of freedom and democracy. 🙏

Compared to Poland and Canada? Sure, maybe. But even in Slovakia, you had about 45,000 people out in the streets just a few days ago demanding the government step down over the murder of a journalist. Are you actually following what’s happening in those countries? Have Estonia and Slovakia gone through any massive liberal shifts, and if so, what kind of results are they actually seeing? Or are you just cherry-picking nations that happen to sound a bit more polished than the US?

Second... Poland? Seriously? You think an ultra-nationalist Catholic nation is supposed to be our blueprint? What’s next, are you going to drop a link to Canada too?

restlesssurfer97 said:Look, I don't know the whole gritty backstory with that specific utility company, but let's just assume for the sake of argument that it went under because of bad private management—I think that's what you're getting at, right?

The real thing is, do you honestly believe the government should be stepping in and using my tax dollars to bail out a situation like this?

It wasn't the owner's fault; the team collapsed because the revenue in the MLS just can't justify those kinds of massive investments.

The real question is, do you honestly believe the government should be stepping in with my tax dollars to fix a situation like this?

The point is that here in America, whenever something isn't profitable—even if it serves some kind of social purpose—it's the government that ends up picking up the pieces. Basically, "Option B" looks great when the sun is shining, but as soon as a storm hits, you realize we're still stuck relying on "Option A" behind the scenes.
