Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
wiredotter14 said:P.S.

Anyone buying an RTX 3070 for $700 is a fool. For that kind of money, you could get a much more powerful RX 6800 or even an RTX 3080—assuming either card actually becomes available. Right now, all these prices are just ridiculous.

It will probably take six months before prices stabilize at all.
The situation with the RTX 3000 series is a preview of what's coming for Intel; high demand paired with low supply always leads to inflated pricing.

Fortunately, I did fine with my RTX 2070 SUPER, so I should be set for a while. I didn't pay much for it, luckily.

Timothy Kim60 said:Honestly, if you're looking at budget builds, going with the i3 10100f seems like the smartest move. You can grab one for around $150, and it’s basically just a rebranded i7 7700.

Then maybe pair it with an H410 motherboard for about $167, add some RAM 2 X8GB, and put whatever you can afford into the GPU. A used GTX 1070 for roughly $433 would probably be the best buy here.

This processor is almost trivial. I looked into the i7 7700, but the prices are just terrible since they're mostly used stock.

we can talk about what they should buy all day long, but people just do whatever they want... I wonder if any kid actually listens.

I just grabbed whatever was in stock. I read that the PSU was good, and it's practically silent. My current one has lasted four years without issues. If this one lasts as long, I guess I'll be satisfied until my next upgrade.

The dual-fan CPU cooler is surprisingly quiet, too. I'm pretty happy with it.

I have an extra ASUS B550 DS3H lying around. It's brand new. If anyone is interested, let me know the price $167.

The build is finished. I might get the OS and other software installed over the weekend, then move on to testing.

Amazon issued me a refund for my SSD because they failed to deliver the power supply on time.

Is this power supply actually any good? EVGA SuperNOVA I’m thinking about ordering it from Best Buy for this build.

The cooler is installed. If it were even 5 mm taller, I guess it wouldn't have fit at all..

I ended up picking up a new CPU cooler today, so that AMD one can just stay put.

Alexander Moore67 I went with your suggestion; they only had white in stock, which is a bummer because I really wanted red or green.

I suppose I agree to some extent.
There is still more on the way..

The package arrived today, but it was missing the power supply and the SSD. They’re shipping those on February 29th since they weren't in stock right now.

I'll probably figure out the power supply separately.
A few photos.
This CPU cooler seems somewhat small. It's rated for 65W, but it looks tiny in this case. I usually go with liquid cooling, but that doesn't fit my AM4 setup.

I picked up the case at Home Depot and got the backup 2.5 1 TB drive from Best Buy.
Once the rest arrives, I'll start the build.

I reached out to them today to cancel my order for the PC Power Supply and swap it for a different model, but they had already shipped the original package. I didn't expect them to process things quite that fast, I guess.
Since I added some other items to my order, they'll be sending a second shipment soon, so I'm considering just picking a different power supply then. I'm still not entirely sure what I'll do with this one, though..

Here are some photos taken right as I was cleaning the dust out of my PC.

I just took a look at this build. I'm using a Corsair VS550, and I guess I'm not entirely sure if that power supply will actually be enough...

If I run into any issues with it, I'll just swap it out and pull the power supply from this PC.

I ended up ordering the parts for my new rig after all.

I picked up the GPU before the NVIDIA RTX 2070 and got the Thermaltake Versa H17 case at Best Buy.

The rest was ordered from Germany.

I suppose this setup should be sufficient for 1080p. I think the combination of the SSD, CPU, and GPU will work well enough.

Forget about mining. Video editing is the main priority here.

I expect demand for the 3000 series will be massive. That usually means lower supply and higher prices, much like what we're seeing right now with the 3080 and 3090 price spikes. For my specific needs, even this 2070 should be sufficient.
My EVGA card arrived today. It’s a beast compared to what I was using before, so I guess I hope it holds up well.
The only thing is that it's slightly wider than a standard 2-slot card because of the fans; it takes up about two and a half slots.
I think I'll hold off on the Intel Core i5 series until they actually launch. If the prices stay reasonable instead of being totally inflated, I might grab an Intel Core i5-12600K. Apparently, there's talk of a cheaper version coming early next year for around $240, which would be a great deal if the rumors are true.
It's mostly for video editing; I won't be using it for gaming very often.
Here are some photos.

Is this a decent component selection?

Intel Core i5 10400F
AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
Patriot Viper 4 32GB DDR4 XMP 2.0 K2 3200 MHz
ADATA XPG Gammix S11 Pro 512 GB
+HDD Backup
Corsair Carbide Series mATX
EVGA 750W Bronze Semi-Modular PSU
What is going on with these RTX 3090 prices being stuck at $2,000?
I am not sure if it even justifies that kind of cost. I guess the lower-end models probably won't be much better when it comes to pricing either.
