Zachary Price2 said:I actually spent some time flipping through the Mississippi Delta dessert catalog, and I have to admit, their cakes look absolutely stunning on the outside. I was seriously considering placing an order because their prices seemed pretty reasonable, too. But honestly, every single person I mentioned them to ended up spitting them right back out, claiming they just use those cheap, pre-made boxed mixes for the batter and the frosting and then just toss in some flavoring to mask the taste. At this rate, I'm going to end up completely losing my mind over cake.
I mean, in this day and age, most places probably do exactly that anyway.🤷
quietlynx40 said:Hey everyone... I have a quick question, and I’m honestly not sure where to turn with it. Let’s dive into something a bit more festive 🙂 I’m looking for someone who can make affordable, handcrafted holiday ornaments—specifically those classic red hearts. Everything I’ve come across so far is $3.25 or even more, which is just way out of my budget. Usually, I could find something similar at the local farmers market for about $1.75... but the artisans there have mostly retired lately and aren't making 😢 anymore
There’s a shop in Chicago—I think that’s the actual name—that specializes in traditional crafts and candles. Their prices usually hover around $1.75 or a bit higher depending on how big you want it, though I guess it might change if you're doing a custom order. There's also another maker out in the suburbs. You should try Googling them; both are pretty solid. I always pick up my stuff from them at the Christmas market 😉
EDIT: Just a thought, since the local craft fair is currently happening downtown at the plaza, maybe check there? You might run into someone 😁
I honestly think you could just ask your local bakery to whip up some cupcakes for you; usually, whenever I've asked, they've told me they do custom orders. 😁(I was actually at a fair out in Rhode Island, not just sticking to things in Washington, D.C.
coastalmoose33, if you scroll back just a few pages, you’ll see plenty of suggestions floating around. Maybe take a quick look through them; you might actually find something that works for you. If nothing else, could you at least specify where you're looking? I mean, which part of the US are you targeting or interested in?
Hmm, you should probably just ask that over in the Midwest thread instead; you seem pretty obsessed with all those bands. There's more to that area than just music, though—you’ll figure out who the real characters are pretty quickly once you're there. We actually have a dedicated thread for restaurant recommendations too. Unfortunately, I'm not from around there myself, but I'm fairly certain someone has already covered this topic before.
I mean, I’m pretty sure individuals can hold a certificate, though I assume sole proprietorships can too. Honestly, I have no clue. Just try to figure something out 🤷
I watched it on my laptop with a friend—it’s called Fireproof. My friend actually commented on it too, saying how much she loved it and that it gave her some great ideas for a wedding. But after reading your post just now, I’ve gotta say, it got a little scary... I started wondering if maybe you were actually her, haha! 😬
feralmoose32, I think we might have been watching the exact same movie tonight!!!! I swear, I just saw that same thing at the very end of a film I was watching!
says: 😕 I’ve actually never even been there. I was just asking if that was the spot. A friend of mine lives in that neighborhood.
My bad, sorry! I got mixed up... someone mentioned they tried the pastries there and didn't really care for them, so I assumed you were talking about yourself... sorry about that...
hehe, yeah, all five was actually a bit confusing. I think I'll definitely swing by there next time I'm visiting a friend, though. I've been looking for some good options for a wedding cake😉
Sean Long4 said:They are.. and look, I know you weren't exactly thrilled with their pastries, but honestly, if I'm being fair, I haven't actually had any issues with them myself.
😕 I've actually never even been there myself. I was just asking if that was the place. A friend of mine lives in that neighborhood.
Daniel Smith8 said:Of course I'm not angry. Not even slightly. 😉 It’s a shame you didn't like them. A total waste of time for the kid. 😢
I didn't feel any sugar hitting my teeth. Honestly? A relief, considering my allergy. Maybe I just got lucky, but frankly, I don't care. They aren't even half as bad as the expensive ones. $40Per pound. Everything's getting more expensive. Just another day in this country. At weddings, nobody touches the dessert table anyway. It’s a waste of money. I didn't even think about ordering more than a few pieces. $27 Per pound.
We tossed out those peaches—none of us, not even our friends, could stand them. I cleared out the cookies with the wafers too. Just too basic for my taste. Everything else is fine.
Man, those pathetic little peaches.😂 Personally, I think they're great. For some weird reason, I actually prefer them when they're harder and more obnoxious—the kind where you feel like they might 😬 fall apart in your mouth. It's just my thing, I guess.😂😂
Eric Davis54 said:urbanowl10, you basically have to buy at least a pound of treats just to "test them out" at any bakery. There’s no such thing as just grabbing a few pieces. Instead, every week or two, I end up hitting up a different shop just to sample everything! 🙂 And honestly, some of these places won't even talk to you unless you pre-order... Daniel Smith8, maybe I just had terrible luck. I ordered everything right around Easter, so maybe they were just slammed, but the flavor wasn't even the main issue—it's just that I'm really picky about this stuff. I’d kill for the ones from Meli, but I know they aren't going to be under $100$40/lb, and I just can't justify paying double for sweets. I'd much rather get something more affordable and just pass the leftovers around after the wedding... The more I talk to my friends, the more it seems like the best move is to get the desserts (and everything else!!!) from outside Washington, D.C. Everything is cheaper and actually tastes better because people actually put in the effort. ☕
I have to agree. It's true, too—like if you go to buy a dress outside of the city, the rental ends up being like 20% cheaper! Total true story. Same dress, same everything.
Eric Davis54 said:I hope Daniel Smith8 won't be mad at me, but I finally tried the treats from both Absom and Mus, and honestly... I wasn't a fan of either one.🤷 Absom feels like a total factory operation—they just use five different creams to make five "different" kinds of pastries. And Mus? Such a letdown. I actually sent my little one there specifically to pick up some sweets, and... man, you could just taste the granulated sugar in so many of them. It was crunchy under your teeth. Plus, none of the pastries were consistent; they all had different heights and widths, and the crusts were falling apart on some of them. 😢 Maybe I’m just being difficult, but seriously, am I crazy for paying $40 per pound 😲 for something that, frankly, isn't even that much better than the stuff you get for $18? Should I be obsessing over every tiny detail (because, let's face it, that's just who I am!), or should I just pay $18 since most people aren't even going to look at the dessert table at a wedding anyway? I've basically been on a mission to attack every bakery in town looking for the perfect wedding treats, and at this rate, I'm going to gain 100 pounds before the big day!🙂
So, come on—think back to any wedding you've been to. Do you actually remember the desserts being anything special?
What I really want to know is, is it considered weird to ask a bakery if they offer wedding cake tastings? Because when I asked at a local shop here in Washington, D.C., the woman there—who was clearly just counting down the minutes until she could clock out—was incredibly rude. She basically told me that if I wanted to taste them, I should just buy them first. And get this, one single pastry is $5.00. What am I supposed to do, blow $50 just to sample everything? Why don't they have samples? Or something for the wedding cake? It feels like it's totally against their own business interests, doesn't it?🤷
feralmoose32 said:Unfortunately, you can always find someone willing to complain about anything—no matter who they are or how much it actually costs
If the specific flavor of the pastries isn't your main concern and the price works for you—especially since you're catering to a big group—then just go for it! You can just brush off whatever negative comments a few people might throw your way; most others won't even notice 😉
At the end of the day, just think about it—every price point comes with its own set of trade-offs 😉
That's just the truth. I remember being at this wedding expo once and trying some pastries from a Lido tent, and I bit into something so sour it felt like it was borderline spoiled—though I suppose someone else might actually enjoy that flavor profile.🤷
Everyone has different tastes. Yesterday, a friend and her husband stopped by to try my cake: he absolutely hated it, and she just isn't a fan of sweet cream cheese. Hehe. I don't really remember the cake from their own wedding at all, but I know the ceremony was 👍👍👍
