It’s just adding ten seconds of wasted time. The player runs out, the goalie comes back in. We take a shot or draw a foul. Then the goalie goes back out and the player heads back in. There's zero benefit to this seventh man—he's basically just waiting for his cue to sub out, and nobody else is actually playing around him anyway. Then we end up with some half-baked shot that their keeper saves easily, and they catch us on the counter against a disorganized defense and a goalie who's still trying to get his footing.

And then Mother Mary just goes full facepalm mode.

So now, everyone expects fans to show up for the derby, leave their brains on a shelf at home, and pretend that a potential win against the Lakers will be some huge satisfaction. As if being seven points behind matters. What do you expect? People falling into a trance because, for the ninth year running in a league with three decent teams and seven semi-pro outfits, we’re stuck in 2nd or 3rd place?

There’s no atmosphere because the Chiefs are on life support. And a huge chunk of the fanbase is right there with them. We're slowly dying—with every loss to a team the level of The Beatles, every slap in the face from Boeing or California, and every single derby where we're down ten points...

Man, I really thought that intense look on Omeyer's face and those clenched fists were just relics of a bad past. Who knows how many times our guys have completely folded under that kind of pressure. And the worst part? Half their defense comes from total chaos, yet somehow our squad still manages to let it mess with their heads.

In my book, the French are always the favorites whenever they step on the court against us. No matter how many different versions of Čosić try to fire up the crowd or hunt for momentum during one of our random wins, those French players are basically professors compared to us.

The only difference between today and our usual matchups against the French is that they started with a goalie who was absolutely clueless—hitting 1/14 on saves—while Kopljar played a half that he usually only pulls off once every thirty games. By the second half, the magic just evaporated; it turned into that same old routine where the French just keep us at arm's length.

Time for another crucial topic—goalkeeping. In handball, the keeper is often the absolute difference-maker in high-stakes games. Look, Mirko is a solid goalie, but he isn't... he just isn't that otherworldly superstar who makes opponents want to quit the sport entirely during big matchups. He’ll have a few brilliant games, sure, but he also tends to hit these massive slumps right when we need him most. Back in those epic battles against the Frenchmen, Omeyer was always the X-factor; his presence alone commanded respect from our side, forcing them into rushed, desperate shots that only boosted his confidence. During those specific games, Mirko usually wasn't on that level. When I think of true elite keepers—guys like Hening Fritz, Polishman Schmal, Omeyer, Šterbik, or even Mexican Stanić—Mirko just doesn't fit that tier. He fluctuates too much and lacks that certain charisma...

If you ignore friendly matches—looking strictly at the WC, WC, and Olympics—we've faced them 12 times since 2003. Each side has walked away with exactly 6 wins. And in that entire stretch, nobody managed to string together more than two wins in a row.

So, it’s a dead heat—both over the long haul and in the short term (we took 2 out of the last 4; the wins have been alternating perfectly steadily).

That’s exactly why the French have plenty of motivation to knock us out by letting the Swedes slip through with a -1 advantage. 🙄

They knocked us out in the semifinals of the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, crushed us in the quarterfinals of the 2007 WC, beat us in the 2009 WC final, and took us down in the WC 2010 final. In that same window, we shut them out in the 2008 WC semifinals and the 2013 WC quarterfinals. Sure, we have a few group stage wins to our credit. Honestly, I’d trade this "equality" for their record in a heartbeat. Not to mention that whenever they beat us, they usually end up draped in gold and cementing their status as a powerhouse, while we're left dealing with nothing but psychological baggage and nightmares about Omeyer and Karabatić...

By the way, back when we played France, we had Ivano Balić in his prime, and lately, it’s been Domagoj Duvnjak—basically the best players on the planet. We just always forget to give Nikola Karabatić a heads-up before the game starts, so the guy ends up looking rude every single time.

We’re playing great—holding a slim 2-3 point lead the whole time—and then, for the first time ever, they decide to sub in more players (up to +3). And just like that, everything goes to hell...
