Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
Kate Cox2 said:The core of this issue lies with certain individuals. Anyone who attempts to raise their children to harbor hatred toward others based on race, religion, or nationality is a first-class idiot, and that won't change regardless of whether religion is taught in schools or not. A person with that kind of malice will find a way to project their hate wherever they go. Fortunately, though, not everyone is like that.

Religious ed has done so much "good" for America that now less than half of all marriages happen in a church, and nobody even follows what was preached in class this past Wednesday.

but hey, clearly we all need to keep attending those religious studies classes, right? 🤦🤦🤦

get this—my high school teacher used to tell students that atheists were violent people. 🤦

some kids actually brought that up to me during my class.

Back in high school, the religion teachers were also our homeroom teachers

just enroll your kid in a proper music school

Anyone expecting our school system to raise children or act as therapists today... they've gotta be out of their minds.

because let's be real, even if they end up in summer school, they aren't gonna magically know more than they did during the regular semester.

The whole point of the story is that American teachers are actually incredible. In our schools, more than 80% of elementary students are finishing their grades with top marks, and that’s really a testament to the hard work of the educators. 🥳

and then there's the absolute train wreck of the applied exam for MIT

urbantinker8 I can't even begin to deal with this right now. Seriously.
See, I guess not everyone’s suffering from total amnesia after all.😁
Is this teacher seriously that clueless? Like, how do you fail to teach a student the cardinal directions when they’re actually putting in the work to learn them? Honestly, she was just incredibly boring. Period.🤦

You’ve got all these quiet kids in class who aren't exactly causing a scene or acting out, so they don't even show up on the radar as "troublemakers." But honestly? They just straight-up don't care. They’re either totally checked out or they just lack any kind of natural knack for certain subjects. It’s like they're just physically present while their brains are miles away.
Even after all that extra grinding—from both the kids and the teachers—they end up scraping by with a D. But let’s be real: calling that a failure on the professor's part? Absolutely not. Not even close.

Cut the crap. Stop talking nonsense.☕
Sign, I've got those too. They just WON'T and they DON'T WANT to.

In any case, even if they aren't happening simultaneously, it just means classes end up being scheduled during zero period, first period, or the very last period of the day; there aren't really any gaps created just because one half of the class is taking ethics while the other takes religious studies.
So, either they are held during the same block, or else the rest of the students are either coming in early for zero period or leaving school early.

By the way, I think more than twenty years ago, I attended a high school where ethics wasn't mandatory. It was basically either religious studies or nothing at all, I suppose.🎉

Same here. My group was basically the last generation stuck with that "religion or bust" choice.

Personally, I chose "nothing"—which mostly just meant grabbing coffee and a smoke at the local diner instead.

I’m sure high schoolers will be absolutely devastated that they have to step out for a Starbucks run mid-class.

nah, there's no coffee shops there

unless you're in religion class, then you're stuck in ethics.

In high school, religion class is just one hour a week. If you aren't feeling it, you can just take ethics instead during the same slot.

I honestly don't get why they can't just let kids swap religion class for an elective in computer science or a foreign language instead.

The real question is, who would actually bother showing up for religion class if they had the choice?

Just finished the movie, it was actually pretty solid

Apparently they’re already cooking up a sixth installment and a TV series too

and honestly, that "good guy" probably won't even make it to a courtroom because if you record someone without authorization, you can basically throw the whole thing out the window—it's pretty much useless as evidence in an American court.
losing their job would be the ultimate outcome, I suppose, but maybe that's still better than nothing at all.
i guess i find it somewhat surprising, actually, that the principal even managed to pull that off.

That’s exactly what was all over the news sites today. The teacher's lawyer is going to hammer home the fact that the cell phone footage isn't admissible evidence since it was recorded secretly.

As far as I know, using your phone during class is a total violation of the rules.

wanderingbadger44 said:I think that’s an incredible way to look at things, and honestly, it’s a brilliant suggestion that could work just as well for high schoolers as it does for college students, letting everyone choose their own path based on what they actually want to study.

My only hesitation is that a plan like this usually comes with a hefty price tag, so we might have to face the reality that it’s out of reach before we even get started.

and room

because you can't just shove 1,000 people into a med program just because there isn't enough lab space or equipment.

but even high school graduation isn't a level playing field because not every school has the same standards

and since everyone was complaining about the honors student flood, MIT fixed the whole mess by adding entrance exams; the results? A total disaster

Getting just 20% on your high school math finals is all you need to scrape by with a passing grade

It’s honestly pathetic

Sarah Hall53 said:The thing is—and this is kind of depressing—grades end up looking pretty much the same across all subjects because they use a bell curve distribution. They just decide what percentage of correct answers qualifies for an A or a B, and that's it. It feels a little hollow if you ask me.

Another issue—and I hear this from teachers all the time—is that these standardized state exams basically train kids to only care about what’s on the test. My colleagues tell me that whenever they try to branch out with a cool topic or dive deeper into something actually relevant to a student's life, the first thing they get asked is, "Is this going to be on the exam?" If the answer is no, they just check out. They're physically there, but mentally, they've already left the room.

Thirdly, who’s actually against having smaller entrance exams for high school? Usually, it’s the psychologists and educators—they call them "high-stakes testing" and claim it’s "too much stress for the kids" and all that.
But look, we had external evaluations started about ten years ago before they were scrapped. Supposedly, it was because those tests clearly showed the massive gap in results based on how much money a family had or how much a specific school district invested in its facilities. Nobody really wanted that kind of inequality being dragged into the light, I guess...

For real, my coworker tells me the exact same thing.

wanderingbadger44 said:What’s actually wrong with the SATs? Aside from students getting decent scores? Or the fact that those scores barely impact college admissions nowadays? (And neither of those points is really a failure of the testing system itself.)

The national standardized tests are easily the most honest, transparent, and professional thing this messy government manages to pull off.

Can you seriously not tell from the quote provided that Judith's ring was red? Did you miss the part in Hemingway's passage where it asks if the woman died from a high fever? Honestly, someone needs to check your work—you clearly didn't earn that A in English class.

And you actually think it's normal for SAT English scores to be better than the scores on the literature exams?!
