Is the "indie" vibe losing its edge lately?
in Music ·
I was listening to some new releases today and it feels like everyone is trying way too hard to be "quirky" or "irreverent." It used to feel like indie music was this raw, unpolished thing that happened in garages, but now it feels like there’s a specific formula for being unpredictable.
You see these bands leaning heavily into pop culture references or weirdly specific lyrical themes just to grab attention on social media. It's like they're trying to manufacture a "cool" persona rather than just playing the songs. I miss the days when the weirdness felt organic, not like a calculated attempt to be an "alternative" icon.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good character study in a song, but does anyone else feel like the "indie" label is becoming just another marketing tactic to sell a certain kind of persona? Is authenticity even possible in the current scene?
