I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we motivate people in high-stakes environments. Whether it's in a corporate office or on a sports field, there seems to be this constant push to find new, "innovative" ways to dangle a carrot in front of people to get them to grind harder.

Personally, I’ve always felt that if you have to rely on external rewards to get someone to do their job or hit their goals, there’s something fundamentally broken in the culture. I remember my old manager at the warehouse used to offer these weird little bonuses for hitting certain quotas, and honestly, it just turned everyone against each other. It felt less like teamwork and more like a race to see who could cut corners first.

Don't get me wrong, a little extra cash or a prize is nice, but does it actually build long-term drive? Or does it just teach people to perform for the payout rather than for the love of the game (or the job)? I worry that once the rewards stop, the motivation just vanishes into thin air.

Do you think tangible rewards actually build better performers, or do they just create a temporary spike in effort?

Think Black Keys-Dead Moon-Part Chimp meets stoner garage rock.
They’re based out of Canada, of course...

This looks good.

Let's get this gig at our local club locked in ASAP.
With VEMP, obviously—the sooner the better.

Best,

Honestly, it would’ve been nice if we had one more band on the bill, maybe even two.
We showed up late to the show—and had to pay a speeding ticket on top of that—so we only caught about half the set, all for $15 (the guy at the window swore they wouldn't play past midnight—typical capitalist 😁).
Then Robin Booth tells me they were way better than last time, even though they were already incredible last time.
All we have left is 🙂
But whatever, we're heading to Chicago today 🙂
Tyler Grant86, I grabbed some extra lyric booklets to pass out during the show.

Not happening!😁
