Thanks for such a detailed breakdown. Yeah, portability isn't really an issue anymore since the battery gave up the ghost ages ago. It’s basically just a desktop now—good for browsing the web, streaming movies, or whatever. Man, that thing was a workhorse. I actually still have the original macOS installed on it. Honestly, I feel a little bad about retiring it. I might take your advice and upgrade the memory. I’ve already taken it apart a few times myself. I was thinking about ordering a new keyboard off eBay, but then again, what if it arrives and turns out to be a total dud? Haha. Anyway, thanks again and cheers!
Haha, my apologies—I misspoke there. What I actually meant was that I’m looking to upgrade the RAM to either 8GB or 16GB, assuming the hardware even supports that much. Does anyone have recommendations on which specific type of memory or SSD would be the best value right now, and maybe a link to a good deal online? To make matters worse, the keyboard has finally given up on me, so I'll need to order a replacement for that as well. At the end of the day, this laptop is just for everyday tasks; it isn't some high-end gaming rig or anything fancy... but for my needs, it still does the job just fine.
Hey everyone, I’m still stuck in indecision regarding my next monitor choice. I've been combing through all your suggestions. That last one mentioned really caught my eye, mostly because the price tag is so much lower. monitor Dell S2421HS, 23.8" IPS, VGA, HDMI Could someone please walk me through why this specific model monitor Samsung Odyssey G5, 24", VA, FHD 1920x1080px, 1ms, VGA, DP, 2xHDMI, NVIDIA G-Sync, 144Hz, curved... is considered superior when it costs twice as much? I'm trying to figure out if it'll play nice with my current NVIDIA RTX 3060 and all the port configurations. Right now, I'm working with a 27'' HP monitor that's currently in the shop for repairs—it was honestly fantastic. At the moment, I'm squinting at some cheap 20'' junk I found. I could use some solid recommendations up to $500, or let me know if the more expensive one is actually a legitimate "deal" up to $600. If anyone can get back to me today so I can pull the trigger on an order, I'd be immensely grateful!
P.S. I suspect a 32-inch screen might be overkill for gaming when sitting just 20-24 inches away like I am... so maybe stick to recommendations for 27 inches or less.
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could offer some recommendations for a monitor, ideally 24 inches or larger. I'm looking to pair it with my current setup, specifically a Gigabyte GTX 1060. If there happen to be any good deals running at Best Buy right now, please let me know. Thanks!
I have a Cooler Master Thunder 600W power supply that I picked up from Micro Center about seven months ago. If I decide to leave my processor at stock settings without any overclocking, do you think it will bottleneck the Nvidia GTX 260? My plan is eventually to swap out the entire platform later on. Also, does anyone know what I might get for the GTX 260—maybe something in the neighborhood of $45?
My dilemma: Should I look into selling this, or would an upgrade be more logical? If I were to sell it, what kind of value are we looking at? Conversely, if I decide to upgrade, what components should I prioritize? Much appreciated.
Timothy Kim60 said:which is exactly what we were trying to warn you about—long-term, this is just a recipe for disaster. Honestly, you might not even need to part with everything. You could probably hang onto the hard drive and the power supply since they're still good, and maybe the case too. Everything else? Just sell it off for pennies on the dollar just to get it out of your sight.
Well, damn. I have the itch to play right now, and who knows if I'll even feel like it later, right? 🙂Anyway, thanks for all the input, everyone. Peace out. 😁
Timothy Kim60 said:It’ll definitely bottleneck a 6670. Honestly, I have no idea by how much—it could be a minor nuisance or a total disaster—but it’s going to happen. You’re essentially running one of those ancient, bottom-tier dual-core AMD chips if I recall correctly. for a 6570, you should be fine enough.
In my humble opinion, just grab the 6670 if the budget allows. You might find yourself wanting to swap out the whole platform later anyway—motherboard, CPU, DDR3 RAM—whether that's because you actually want to upgrade or because your current motherboard decides to give up the ghost one morning. It's better to overbuild slightly than to regret it later...
Thanks for the input, haha. I think I'll just save up until I hit that $300-$400 mark and pick up a decent machine. It'll last me a lot longer than trying to keep patching up this junk. 😛

And please, skip that power supply; go with one of these instead:
A little more context wouldn't hurt—why recommend one of those specific power supplies over the one I mentioned? Plus, you didn't actually answer my question about which of these three graphics cards to pick, or if my CPU is going to bottleneck any of them... honestly, the processor is just enough for what I need right now. I appreciate the input, really, but I'm looking for some granular detail here. It isn't easy for me to drop over a thousand bucks, especially since I'm planning to grab a GPU, some RAM, and a new PSU all at once. thanks.
Are you looking for an AGP or a PCI-E card? PCI-E What does your current or planned setup look like, and what kind of power supply are you running? For the power supply—I'm planning on picking this up http://www.newegg.com/p/example-item-12692. What’s your budget looking like? $200-around the maximum Which stores are you considering? Newegg I'm currently torn between http://www.newegg.com/p/example-item-9997, http://www.newegg.com/p/example-item-11910, and even http://www.newegg.com/p/example-item-10026. My main concern is whether my CPU can actually handle these GPUs, or if my aging motherboard is going to become a massive bottleneck... I'll be adding another 4 gigs of DDR2 to the mix. For the display, I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 720n [17" LCD] (H9FLB06871), and the board is an Asus M2V-MX (2 PCI, 1 PCI-E x16, 2 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN). I would truly appreciate your thoughts on this... thanks.
Of course, I swapped out the power supply back then... this one is solid. Honestly, I only picked it up because I didn't think I’d be gaming on this rig anymore; I figured it would just serve as my dedicated torrent machine. I am planning to grab some more RAM eventually, mostly just to save myself some headaches later on, but I suppose you want more concrete answers.
