Advice for buying a gaming PC! in Desktops ·
Timothy Kim60 said:Henry Campbell4, yes, you handled that situation perfectly by pairing the Pentium with that discounted $533 rx 470... In terms of balancing the CPU with that specific GPU, it really is an ideal match...

It is truly wonderful that you managed to find such a deal, especially when considering that within just a month, the price for those two components might drop by about $100... though, of course, DDR4 prices are currently behaving quite erratically due to the smartphone market... Generally speaking, for overall pricing, it is vital that the US Dollar also weakens slightly... All things considered, this is a fantastic window of opportunity for building a budget PC... I am almost certain we have never seen a time where gaming felt quite this "affordable"...👍

It has been about a month since I first inquired about the most optimal configuration... and observing how the market shifts lately, things seem to be changing quite rapidly
so my question is, does this setup represent the current best value for a solid Full HD gaming experience?

Intel Pentium G4560 (instead of the Intel i3 6100—though naturally, once availability improves, perhaps in two or three weeks, they should be easier to find)
ASRock H110M
Crucial 8GB DDR4 2133 Cl 15
Seagate 1TB 7200rpm-64mb (or perhaps a Western Digital or a Toshiba)
Zalman T5
FORTRON Hexa Plus 400W
Rx 470 (I am opting for this over the gtx 1050 because the price of the Rx has dropped significantly, and in my estimation, there isn't much of a difference between them at the moment)

Now, I wonder if that power supply provides sufficient headroom, and whether the Rx 470 might feel somewhat "bottlenecked" by this newer Pentium processor...

On an unrelated note—which version of Windows serves gamers better: Win10 or Win8, particularly if one doesn't have a licensed version handy? (Since Win8 lacks dx12 support, whereas Win10 feels rather "intrusive" in its telemetry)...

I appreciate the feedback provided, and I have decided that I will proceed with the motherboard regardless of the outcome; if I find myself needing something more powerful down the line because my current setup simply cannot keep up, then that is a challenge I will simply have to face...
On a separate note, for those of you who closely monitor market trends and pricing fluctuations, would it be more prudent to make a purchase now before the holiday season begins, or is it wiser to hold off for perhaps a month to see if prices stabilize after the Cyber Monday rush?

In my estimation, opting for at least an mATX setup would be the wiser path to avoid any unnecessary headaches... unless those few extra centimeters truly don't matter to you in the grand scheme of things...

It isn't a dealbreaker, but I find ITX builds much more aesthetically pleasing because mATX cases tend to look quite bulky, whereas an ITX build just looks so much cooler... though I have been reviewing the specifications and it appears everything should fit, including the power supply and even a longer graphics card, given the VGA length limitations of 255mm for the inner chassis and 285mm for the outer chassis—though I am somewhat uncertain what "outer chassis" implies, perhaps referring to components protruding slightly from the frame...
My only lingering concern is that the CPU fan might have less breathing room, but then again, Intel i3 chips don't typically run all that hot, so perhaps I am overthinking this...
And besides, there is that old saying about how technical precision is what really matters... ha...

I would truly appreciate some guidance regarding a PC build I am considering
Intel i3 6100 ASRock H110M-ITX HyperX Fury
ASRock H110M-ITX
HyperX FURY 8GB DDR4 2133
Seagate 1 TB 7200 rpm-64 (though I am open to Western Digital if they happen to offer better quality at the moment)
Thermaltake V1 mini ITX
ITX FORTRON Hexa plus 400 w (though I am weighing this against a Thermaltake Litepower 450W, perhaps a Kolink Core 500W, or some other alternative)
Nvidia GTX 1050 ti (I suspect the MSI OC might be the superior choice, though I believe a Palit would also be good quality)

My primary intention for this machine is basic gaming on a television set, likely targeting 1080p resolution or perhaps slightly lower... Given that, I find myself wondering if I might encounter significant overheating issues within an ITX chassis, and whether it might be more prudent for my future needs to opt for an mATX setup instead... specifically if I eventually decide to upgrade for VR capabilities, such as moving toward an i7 paired with a GTX 1080... I am curious how such an upgrade would manifest, and whether it is even feasible to achieve clean cable management within such a compact enclosure... those are my main concerns, along with any suggestions you might have for components that fall within this same budget range...
Thank you all very much

Well, I honestly thought my graphics card was holding up just fine—only to realize it’s essentially useless without a complete system overhaul... It seems you get exactly what you pay for, though adding the cost of a whole new PC to the mix makes the price tag even more ridiculous, haha... My thanks to everyone for the input

I am well aware that the ideal course of action would be to overhaul the entire system from scratch, yet I simply cannot justify such a significant investment into a gaming rig at this particular moment... With my current setup and a modest amount of additional funds, there are certain upgrades available, and the Q6700 keeps coming to mind. I did consider looking into the Q9550, but seeing it priced at $130 feels quite excessive for what is essentially an aging processor...
Let us approach the matter this way: if I were to upgrade my existing configuration by moving to the Q6700, would I notice a substantial improvement, or merely a marginal one? That is the core of my concern...

Dear fellow forum members, I would truly appreciate your insights on a matter regarding my current setup:
my PC consists of
a Gigabyte P35-DS3 revision 2.0 running the latest F14 BIOS version
an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, which is currently clocked at 3,200 MHz via an 8*400 multiplier while utilizing the stock cooler—noting that I haven't touched the voltage settings, leaving them strictly on "auto" in the BIOS...
4GB of Kingmax DDR2 RAM at 800MHz with timings of 5-5-5-15 and a 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio
a Radeon 5670 1GB DDR5 graphics card, which was the last one I purchased
a Blue Storm II 500W power supply unit
a Seagate Barracuda 320GB hard drive
housed in a Thermaltake chassis, which looks quite nice with its transparent side panel🙂

My proposed upgrade path
involves switching to either a Q6600 or a Q6700 processor, priced at roughly $70 USD, and I intend to overclock it slightly to somewhere around 3.2 or 3.4 GHz...
I am also considering adding a Cooler Master Hyper 212 or perhaps a Noctua NH-D15, both of which could potentially be repurposed for a future LGA1155 platform upgrade down the road
Essentially, for about $50 USD, I could improve the overall performance of this machine—perhaps even less if I manage to sell the E6750...

Does this plan seem sound to you all, and is it actually worth pursuing? Would the performance gains be significant enough to handle modern coding tasks or recent games more effectively?
Which processor do you believe offers better value, and which cooler would you recommend I select...

So, I am currently running an Intel Core 2 Extreme E6750 that I have actually managed to overclock to 3.00 GHz, paired with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 3850... I am looking to step up my hardware a bit by upgrading the graphics card, with a budget of roughly $75... My dilemma is whether it would be more prudent to pick up another card, perhaps a 4850, and attempt to run them in CrossFire, or if I should simply focus my resources on purchasing a single, more capable unit... I would truly appreciate any suggestions or guidance you might be able to offer me...
Windows 7 in Software ·
Greetings to all my fellow forum members... I was wondering if anyone here has had the chance to test out Windows 7 and its compatibility for professional users—specifically regarding reader functionality and the stability of a 64-bit OS... I actually reached out to the support team at Ezaba to inquire about this, but their response was somewhat underwhelming; they claimed they haven't tested it yet because it hasn't been officially released... which is quite surprising to me, considering I have been observing various versions of it circulating for months now...

I find myself contemplating another rather significant question regarding our nutritional protocols: is it actually beneficial to periodically cease protein supplementation to allow the body to "reset" or "purify" itself, and if so, what would be the appropriate duration for such a hiatus? My own intuition suggests that there shouldn't be any direct harmful consequences from continuous use, yet I cannot help but wonder if we might be placing an undue burden on the kidneys or the liver beyond what is strictly necessary... perhaps there is some merit to stepping back occasionally?

Roger Richardson61 said:Protein supplementation is certainly beneficial. As a general rule, one might say that "the quality of your whey is directly proportional to the size of your budget." If you aren't concerned about the expense, consuming it both in the morning and prior to your training sessions is advisable. Furthermore, I would strongly suggest adding glucose to your PWM strictly after your workout; it provides significant utility and is remarkably inexpensive...
Regarding your evening routine, I wouldn't recommend whey protein—even though that specific brand isn't pure whey, its primary component remains the same—because it digests far too quickly in the stomach. Instead, I have mentioned countless times that cottage cheese is the superior choice for nighttime, as it requires hours rather than minutes to break down...

Thanks for the advice; I will definitely give the glucose a try since I have nothing to lose and it really is quite cheap. As for the cottage cheese, I'll have to see about that, because until I reach a Big Mac menu level of physique, I'll just keep washing my meals down with a glass of protein 🙂🙂😂 and call that true fitness 👍

I thought I should weigh in on this discussion as well... personally, I consume a serving of Optimum Nutrition protein about 45 minutes prior to my workout sessions, followed by another serving immediately afterward, and on days when I am not heading to the gym, I typically have a shake before retiring for the night. My training schedule generally consists of three sessions per week, though occasionally I might train every other day, or perhaps two days in a row followed by a two-day rest period, depending entirely upon my availability and various professional obligations... To be perfectly honest, I find myself somewhat perplexed by this frequent mention of glucose among the members here, as no one has ever seen fit to suggest it to me until now. Since I transitioned from merely consuming protein after my workouts to incorporating it beforehand as well, I have certainly begun to notice tangible results, feeling as though I possess significantly more strength and vitality during my lifting sessions... I would be most interested to hear your thoughts regarding this specific choice of protein—which seems to be quite highly regarded by everyone at my local gym—as well as my current timing and consumption methods.
