Megan Lee5 said:Seriously though, is there actually a box office where I can just buy a ticket??

Look, I'm being dead serious when I tell you they do have one, but I get the feeling those tickets run about $150 for a single night...

Listen, you'll get a dozen different opinions from a dozen different people, but my take? You probably won't even regret it...
Sure, but only if you're talking about a million bucks...
Lily was compared to Taylor Swift by a colleague earlier, and just before that, my friend Silvije called her the American version of Danijela Martinović—there’s definitely something going on there
Hatebreed played earlier in the evening, which I really wasn't expecting—to be honest, I didn't even feel like seeing them, my buddy basically dragged me along—but they absolutely KILLED IT. Their covers of Fugees and Slayer were the most extreme tonal shifts I've ever heard in one set, just pure, unrelenting heavy machinery... A fantastic shoutout to the crowd at the end, "we love you! we're Hatebreed!" 😬
Because of them, I was late for Kraftwerk and I don't regret it for a second. I watched three songs and couldn't grasp the appeal. "Radioactivity" touched me a bit—probably their best track—but then again, a scratchy old record could move me just as much. I can't imagine what else they could have booked for that kind of money 😢
Yeahsi just didn't work for me, for some reason. The sound was muddy and quiet (and I wasn't even that far back), and the performances... I don't know. Maybe I was still too wired from Hatebreed? But I came wanting to hear those songs, I heard them, and yet it still fell flat. Maybe if they had played somewhere smaller and more intimate? I wish I could have a do-over; it's a shame it turned out this way.
Franz was amazing! Hit after hit, they play incredibly well, looking as polished as boy band members, and that great effort to cater to the local vibe (a cheap trick, but it works—think of how certain icons used to do it)—that moment when the guy shouted LOUDER!!! It was genuinely great, charming, and beautiful. They stretched out the songs at the end a bit, which I don't think suits them, but otherwise, a stellar performance. A truly solid pop group.
The idiots were excellent as always, though my heart ached watching certain parts of the crowd—how can someone throw an empty cup, or fail to sing along to the new choruses? I felt like I was singing better than some half-hearted drunks, and if it sounded that bad to ME, I can only imagine what it sounded like to everyone else 😢 They played "this isn't the place for us" and the festival's best song, but it's not over yet 👋 <- me in the front row

Nowadays, I glance at Art Brut or Editors just enough to see what they're about, and then I head straight to the metal stage and refuse to budge ☕ darkmoose15, see you there?
You're right about that. To me, Summerteeth always felt almost like a compilation of several different bands, which was part of the appeal... but seeing them live, everything just sounded identical, like some Tom Petty 🤷

coppermarlin81 said:Man, were you having the time of your life during those three days? 🤷 🙏

Except for Lizard, obviously. No complaints there...

Bats, Shellac, Faith Healers, Sonic Youth, Neil Young, Deerhunter, El-P, Vivian Girls, Vaselines... that’s ten bands right there. Hard to say the score is actually that bad...😢
urbannomad30 said:it honestly felt like there was a near-unanimous consensus among music lovers that this might be the greatest lineup in festival history, provided you actually have taste 🤷

Music is fine, I suppose, but I’ll go ahead and agree with myself that this is easily the best festival 🙂lineup ever assembled
...
Yeah, that was pretty much my look at the concert too 🙂 Honestly, the only album I ever actually listened to was Summerteeth, and this new stuff feels worlds away from that... Some guy in the crowd started screaming "play Free Bird" for no damn reason 😬

Anyway, I ran into a colleague recently who’s a huge fan of the band, and even she agreed that the new album is—and I quote—"so good that I streamed the whole thing and didn't even feel the need to download it" ☕

Tweedy had a pedalboard that stretched nearly six feet long 🙏 🙏 🙏 It just goes to show once again: the amount of actual good music you make is inversely proportional to the amount of tech gadgets you need to produce it 🙄
Look, I didn't think I needed to spell this out, but this is entirely a matter of MY own taste. Most of my friends would probably find plenty of other bands much more appealing...
With that, I’ll wrap up this report from my indie travels. If I had another thousand words in me, I might have added them:

FESTIVAL WRAP-UP

David Gedge performed an acoustic set in the back room of a shoe store 😁 He was pleasant, charming, and genuinely likable. Most of the set consisted of Wedding Present hits, with just one track from Cinerama—Superman, which was easily the highlight of the show. Afterward, I stood near him, but I lacked the guts to actually go over and shake his hand, much like when I saw Wedding Present back in London. Dammit... 😢
The Intelligence played a club gig the night before the festival. They’ve got a new drummer, a Black woman—not sure if she’s the same person from Thermal? They were solid enough, though I was pretty drunk, so all I really remember is everyone shouting "IUU IUU IUU IUU" during the chorus. The opening act was some MULETRAIN group from Madrid; they were a total punk disaster, full of pogo dancing and typical chaos. It was great!
Plants & Animals played in a small park the day after the festival. I saw them last year in the Netherlands when they were timid, pathetic, and honestly kind of funny, so they were alright. Now they've grown a spine, grown mustaches, and bought ironic Ray-Ban glasses—they've become the real deal. I fell asleep during something else and only woke up toward the end...
Kimya Dawson—same park. Strange women, truly. She looks like an ex-convict singing songs about how turtles and frogs don't shave their armpits. I have to admit, she’s incredibly witty and charming, but I suspect I would have enjoyed her lyrics more if I were twenty years younger 😬
John Maus—the festival closing party. Some professor type, dressed in a suit and shirt like he just stepped out of a lecture hall. He plays MIDI backing tracks from a laptop while screaming, shrieking, and convulsing over them; the man takes art far too seriously. Possibly the worst concert I have ever attended. He did have one irritatingly catchy hit called "Rights for Gays" 🙏
Wilco—watched them in some beautiful concert hall a few days after the festival. Stunning atmosphere, incredible sound, gorgeous stage setup... but the music was bottom-tier. Weren't they supposed to be some kind of Americana or alt-country outfit? What I heard sounded like any old 70s boogie rock band playing for truckers, except even Lynyrd Skynyrd had better hits. A total disappointment...
Social Distortion—another rock show the day after Wilco, much more my speed. Every single song was a hit, the guys are cool as hell, great performance, great crowd. On my way back from the city, I almost turned around to catch them again in the suburbs
Sonny Vincent—a cool veteran of the '77 New York punk scene who played right after Social D in some dive bar. He absolutely tore the house down. Charismatic, witty, hilarious, backed by an excellent band (guys from his own generation, respect) and killer songs and covers (like "My Generation" and the Stones' "Bitch"). The ticket cost six bucks—seven times cheaper than the Wilco show 😢
BAND THREE

They started out decent—hooked me pretty fast. I actually liked them during that transition from drone to shoegaze, but now they’ve just turned soft. Every song sounds identical from start to finish (and just like the one before it), and the sound isn't nearly as massive as it should be, likely because they lack a live drummer. I drifted off during the third track and didn't snap out of it until the end of the set; honestly, I would have preferred Uselom over being wide awake...
th' faith healers - a solid, standard group! No idea why David is into them 😁 cute lady. I really enjoyed them, as did my buddies from Yo La Tengo, including the bassist:

neil young - I don't listen to him or follow his work, but I have to admit he's good. If he could just pick up the tempo on his songs, he might actually become someone...
liars - absolute nonsense 🤮
deerhunter - 🙈 excellent. Just like every other band I've ever obsessed over, obviously. Great songs, great performance, and it reminded me that since I'm their bassist 😲 I had a blast—drank plenty of beer and did my happy dance, which involves hands in pockets, a smile on my face, and knees bouncing roughly in time with the music
sonic youth - spent 90% of the concert standing in line for the restroom after too many beers during Deerhunter. The little bit I did see was from the ninth row. They played "Tom Violence" and "Expressway to Yr. Skull," and I kept imagining how much better it would be to hear those tracks at a Sonic Youth show rather than in a chemical restroom next to the venue. A total debacle 😢
el-p - a complete riot, shame about the late slot (started at 3 AM). Managed to stay awake until the end; hoping for a chance to see what he's all about later...
Mandelbrot Set in Music ·
How do you actually pronounce the American word "vinyl"? 🙂

Anyway, it’s a solid announcement and good news overall 👍 I'll wait for someone else to grab one before I decide if I actually like it... just hoping there isn't any weird silence between the tracks 😬
DAY TWO RECAP

Crystal Stilts - music that's a mediocre imitation of Roy Orbison; an awful band to witness. The singer acts like a superstar behind sunglasses, yet I could probably name at least four items in my fridge that possess more charisma than him. Total noise makers. I hate them.
Bat for Lashes - a lovely woman making music that simply isn't for me. She had an excellent drummer, too bad he was barely audible over the idiotic techno sounds the synth player kept blasting over EVERYTHING CONSTANTLY. Left after the third set.
Vivian Girls - about twenty minutes of great playing—shame they played forty-five. It's been a long time since I've seen a band start so solidly only to end so unnecessarily. The guitarist was exceptionally hot in those short shorts, which was a pleasant surprise—honestly, I only watched them until the end because of her... 😁
Tokyo Sex Destruction - Spanish soul fingers. God help us. Left after the first set.
Carsick Cars - some demo band from rural Ohio. God help us. Left after the first set.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - more like the pains of being untalented at songwriting. Pleasant career-pop where I couldn't remember the choruses EVEN WHILE THEY WERE HAPPENING! 🙏 🙏 🙏
Throwing Muses - I assume they were booked because Nickelback and Alanis Morissette were too expensive? A tragedy.
The Drones - uninteresting rock...
Fucked Up - uninspired hardcore punk that feels like a desperate grab for relevance, because it would be truly stupid if there wasn't a single subculture left in this world that hasn't been hijacked by guys with asymmetrical hair, mustaches, and women's Levi's. The heavy-set singer spent most of the set leaning into the crowd, while eleven (11—count them!) cameramen and photographers spent most of the show on stage (standing right in front of the band, obviously, because why would anyone actually want to see the band at their own concert?) filming the crew "capturing" a supposedly "punk" concert. I've seen the death of punk many times, but this was the most painful... PLEASE JUST DISBAND ALREADY :2up:
Shellac - naturally the highlight of the night (not that they had to work for it). I want to raise Todd as my child. Steve was his usual charmingly pissed-off self; after the set, he went back onto the stage with a camera—I was worried he’d get carried away and start snapping photos of the crowd, but instead, he just yelled, "this is a piece of shit, does anybody want this fuckin' piece of shit?" and tossed it into the audience. Absolutely precious... 😍
Bloc Party - boring men. I don't like them. I didn't like them when they sounded like Gang of Four, and god knows I won't like them now that they sound like Simple Minds...
I have a feeling there was a thread about this year's Primavera, but neither Google nor the forum search can seem to find it. 🤷

Here is how little Lalet felt at Primavera back in 2009:

THE FESTIVAL ITSELF - surprised by the amount of dead concrete. Sure, it’s by the ocean, but they managed to pave over everything possible. Even out in the middle of nowhere feels nicer than this 😕 Beer was a tolerable 4 bucks for half a liter, though I have no idea how they fit a declared half-liter into those tiny 12-ounce cups 🤔 Not sure how many people were there, just know there weren't many attractive ones. Saw some great shirts—Radio Birdman, Naked Raygun, Hammerhead, The Cramps, and maybe sixty copies of Sonic Youth's "Goo."

DAY ONE BANDS

Women - decent, grinding indie pop; it wouldn't hurt if the band members actually looked alive
The Bats - the festival's best surprise. Beautiful New Zealand pop with actual history and prestige that I wasn't aware of. Anyway, lovely older guys and gals, lovely songs, all lovely... planning on becoming a fan
Vaselines - better than expected. If I had bothered to get within half a mile of the stage, they probably would have been even better. Their Nirvana cover was solid, and the rest of the set was mostly good, especially the punkier stuff. They were funny between songs, mostly in a good way.
Yo La Tengo - could only catch the first thirty minutes before needing to rush to see Lizards, and of course, in those thirty minutes they did: a) fifteen minutes of feedback-heavy noise just for the sake of it, b) two new songs, and c) one song I know (luckily "Autumn Sweater," which I love; unfortunately, I haven't heard singing that out of tune in ages, and I am currently listening to Dinosaur Jr to recover). Despite all that, those thirty minutes were excellent. I feel terrible I couldn't stay until the end
The Jesus Lizard - the reason I paid for the entrance fee $400 I mean, how could you not? Mac plays more and better than he does on cassette. Yow, man. Duane looks like David Byrne. Sims wasn't wearing short shorts 😢 On Duane's amp LED display, it was flashing Happy New Year. 😍 They played "Dudley," "Mouth Breather," "Bloody Mary," "7 vs 8," "Wheelchair Epidemic," "Thumper," "Destroy Before Reading," "Seasick," "Gladiator," "Puss," "Glamorous," and probably "Killer McHann," though I can never remember the sequence. Unfortunately, they only got 50 minutes (five more than Vivian Girls 🙂). I'd love to see them again, maybe at a club like the Bowery or something
Andrew Bird - the ultimate distraction. This guy with a violin and a synthesizer drew ten times the crowd of the aforementioned best band in the history of best bands 🙏 I lasted ten minutes before sitting down to stare into space instead (more interesting!)
My Bloody Valentine - a nuisance and a bore. Vocals were inaudible, constant screeching from the feedback. At certain points, I felt an unbearable urge to reach for my old hunting rifle. I watched until the end only because of the woman. It won't happen again.

Posting this on day two so I don't lose track of my sarcasm...
You said way too much 😠😠😠
...
Kraftwerk and The Strokes actually share some common ground 😢

I can't stand those massive multi-day festivals 😢
Ugh, some Mexican cripple and a casino image drummer Kolje, though on the flip side, that singer is killing me with those abscess-ridden vocals—totally sounds like she's fighting off kidnappers. Everything else is just mediocre 🤷
I recall seeing beat credited on the "i think i see myself on cctv" CD, and even Wikipedia backs this up: After performing cover versions of Yugoslav rock song with Mexican musicians in London and working with local musicians in The bands It's Good to Smoke and Brushstick blues, Kojic decided to reform Disciplina Kičma. In the meantime He started performing as Black Tooth and with an African-American Singer Gofie beba and drummer peti Warren ( also known as beat ) fra Auckland reformed The band with an altered name , Disciplin a Kitschme. beat used to work with The bands DD Smash fra Australia and various American bands and Gofie beba debuted in Disciplin a Kitschme.

but I trust my own memory more...🤷

At the end of the day, you don't learn how to be a real punk from some textbook. You learn it in the parking lot behind the club 🙂 :cuburbija:
