XFX AMD Radeon HD 7870

The AMD Radeon HD 7870 (desktop) supports DirectX 11.2

yeah, okay, fine... so if you're the expert, what's your actual advice here? which OS should I actually jump over to? maybe 8.1? honestly though, I feel like 8 is probably fine too, and since 8 and 8.1 basically feel like the exact same thing to me anyway... :S

exactly like that! :-)

Even if this isn't strictly "on topic," I gotta say... for my own needs as an everyday home user, the latest version of Windows OS is definitely a step up from what came before. It’s not perfect—not that anyone expects it to be—but it’s solid, it doesn't nag you constantly with all those annoying notifications (which you can just kill off anyway), and I’ve finally gotten used to the UI... though honestly, I still feel way more productive staying in desktop mode...
----
The system score (link) is just showing what the hardware can handle, it’s got nothing to do with how the OS actually performs.

alright, alright, thanks for all the info. and I also heard that Windows 8 is actually a bit better than Windows 7 when it comes to gaming since it supports DirectX 11.1... I've got a Radeon XFX 7870 right now and I'm not entirely sure if it handles 11.1, but it definitely does 11!

Noah Sanchez39 said:Sleep and hibernation: frequently asked questions

man look "Why does my computer not go into sleep or hibernation as expected, or why does it wake unexpectedly?"

That’s probably where the whole mess is coming from... 😉

thanks anyway I finally figured out what was going on, turns out I had to dive into those adapter settings for the network card and uncheck some random box that was keeping everything awake 🙂 I've got another question though, because I can't find anything decent online about actual reasons why Windows 7 or Windows 8 would be better than the other, just a bunch of useless junk everywhere... and does the system score even matter at all? Like for gaming? I'm seeing stuff where Windows 7 hits like a 7.9 and then Windows 8 goes up to 9.9 :S haha

Hey guys, quick question for you... I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1, and every single time I try to put the machine into hibernation, it just wakes itself right back up immediately. Anyone know why that happens?
I actually just finished building this rig a few days ago with all new parts, and ever since I put it together, it’s been doing this constant waking thing. Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this because honestly, I really don't want to have to manually shut everything down every single time I step away...
Thanks in advance.

Just tried it again, and nope, still nothing. I honestly don't get it... a buddy of mine has it running perfectly fine on his rig, and even though his computer is way weaker than mine and he can barely play it, at least it actually launches... meanwhile, I can't even get past the loading screen 🤷

Btw, because of this mess, I switched over to Windows 8, but then I realized the exact same thing happens on Windows 7 too... just total nonsense

Check out what I stumbled upon: '' Activation context generation failed for "e:\ games \ Mortal Kombat Complete Edition\DiscContentPC\MKKE.exe". From what I can tell, you gotta install Visual C ++ since you're missing it...

Have you even bothered checking the event log yet? It’ll tell you exactly why the game won't launch if you actually look, just follow this link to figure out how to get to that log: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...s-Event-Viewer

Hey everyone,

So I've run into a bit of a headache here, haha. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and just grabbed that new Mortal Kombat Complete Edition that dropped a few days ago. But whenever I try to fire it up, I get hit with this error:
'' The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail '' Can anyone actually explain what the hell that means?
I've been digging around online and some people are saying I need to mess with Visual C ++... so I went ahead and installed the 2008 and 2010 versions, obviously the 64-bit ones, but still nothing. It’s not happening with any of my other stuff, so the game itself clearly works fine and my rig is definitely powerful enough to handle it, which means there's gotta be some tiny little program or something missing somewhere... thanks for the help!

Alright, alright, alright. 😁

Edit: * if you're replying directly to the post right above yours, there’s seriously no need to Quotate it, you're just wasting space for everyone else...

I don't even know, man, I was hanging out on this tech forum the other day and posted my specs, and everyone started acting like experts, telling me I absolutely had to grab a dual HD 7770 setup because it’s supposedly some god-tier deal or whatever... so I'm just sitting here thinking, okay, fine, now what...
do you really think I won't be able to run any of the new games on it? 😕
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
1. I mean, look, I’m living in Switzerland, and things are getting a little tight here because they’re starting to pull DDR2 RAM from the shelves...
2. Right now, I’ve just got 2x2GB of Kingston PC-6400 800MHz RAM and honestly, that's all I'm buying for now.
3. Plus, having a Best Buy just two minutes away from my place makes it way too easy, haha. ^^
4. I really regret not jumping on DDR3 sooner since those sticks are dirt cheap these days.
5. I was actually thinking about picking some up for my birthday, and I wouldn't even care about the price, I'd grab them in a heartbeat. But first, I need to see how these new games run, and if they start lagging on me, then obviously I'm heading out to grab an upgrade...🙂

Right now, Windows 7 is eating up about 1.22 GB of my RAM.
I haven't really checked how much it pulls while I'm actually gaming, though. Before this, I was running an Nvidia gtx 260 and man, games were just stuttering constantly...
So I figured it might be a bottleneck with both the GPU and the memory, especially since AC 3 was lagging like crazy on my old setup. I finally pulled the trigger on this AMD HD 7770 and things are running way smoother now, but looking ahead, there's a mountain of new titles coming out and I'm starting to wonder if 4 GB is just gonna cut it... because like I mentioned before, the specs for Crysis 3 say you really need 8GB just to hit the recommended mark! I mean, it's not like I'm trying to play everything on Ultra settings or anything, but obviously, the higher the settings, the better the experience, right? Plus, my monitor is Full HD, so I definitely need a more beefy rig to handle all that... heh.

Benjamin King2 said:Look, is 4 GB actually enough or what? You fire up a game and it just swallows all your RAM instantly. Why on earth would you think 4 GB is cutting it??

I mean, honestly, having anything more than 8GB on my current motherboard would just be overkill at this point... haha.
It sounds like a stupid reason, I know, but whatever... so you really think 4 GB is totally fine??

BTW, I was looking at the specs for the new Crysis 3 and it says you need 6 GB of RAM to even run it. So yeah...
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
I've got a quick question for you guys, nothing crazy, just something that's been rattling around in my head lately.
Right now I'm sitting on 4 GB of RAM (2x2GB sticks) and I'm thinking about grabbing another 4 GB to match it (another 2x2GB set)... would having more actually make a difference, specifically with Windows 7, or is it just gonna help with gaming? My rig is doing alright as it is, but since I have 4 slots and only two are filled, I feel like I'm just leaving performance on the table if I don't fill those other two up... what do you all think? Would jumping to 8 GB of RAM actually make the whole experience smoother or am I just looking at better frame rates in games? Btw, my setup is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66, an AMD Radeon HD 7770 OC Edition, plus a 1TB drive, a 320GB drive, and a 650GB portable one haha, I know that's a lot of storage but whatever... xD

driftingbadger17 said:That’s exactly why the rating is what it is...
Because you're seeing pretty much the same transfer speeds on both drives every single hour...
And there's that 5.9 index score too...

It just shows up as a Samsung HD103SI ATA Device—that's what the system calls my hard drive...🙂
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Larry Ortiz5 said:It’s just basic physics, man... a mechanical drive is inherently slower, so you're never gonna see those top-tier scores. Honestly, my own score is stuck at a 5.9 purely because of the HDD, otherwise I'd be looking at a solid 7.7 or 7.8. If the numbers are driving you crazy, just grab an SSD and you'll see that disk rating jump straight to 7.9.

ugh, what am I even supposed to do with an SSD? I know they're faster, but they cost way too much money right now... heh, let the numbers sting a little, I guess... heheh

driftingbadger17 said:Because the new drive clearly has the exact same performance as the old one.
Is the motherboard even up to it? Who knows. Is it even a SATA 3 drive?
My SATA 2 drive hits a 5.9 index

I honestly have no clue which SATA version I'm running, pretty sure it's just 2 but I can't be certain :S

Rachel Bishop26 said:I've got a question for you guys. A few months back, I picked up a laptop without an OS, and then my friend's dad took it over to this local computer shop—not gonna name names here—and they hooked me up by installing the whole Windows 7 Professional suite along with everything else like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and all that junk for free. But then, two days ago, this message pops up out of nowhere followed by a black screen saying "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine"🙂
So, what am I supposed to do now? The biggest headache is that I honestly don't even know if it was legitimate to begin with, because you know how those big government agencies get huge bulk licenses and sometimes people just... install them for others like this, and besides, things are pretty awkward with that friend right now so I can't really ask her about it😢
Is there any way to fix this, or am I just stuck waiting for the 29-day grace period to run out?

Just go find some Windows 7 genuine crack on a torrent site, download it, install that, and you won't have a single problem... just disable Windows Update entirely or set it so it only searches for updates and you manually deal with them later when you feel like it. That's basically it... 🙂

Hey guys, quick question for you... so a few days ago I decided to beef up my rig with a beefier graphics card. Obviously, my Wei score for the GPU shot up, which was cool, but I also swapped in a new 1 TB HDD Samsung, and yet my overall score hasn't budged an inch... because of this drive, my total score is stuck at 5.9. Why on earth is my hard drive giving me such a low rating? I used to have a 320 GB Hitachi and it got the exact same 5.9, but this one is supposed to be faster and it's a full 1 TB, so I just don't get it... if anyone has any ideas or if there’s absolutely nothing that can be done, please let me know. I was thinking maybe there's some setting I need to tweak or something involving the drive, but who knows... heh. thanks

Which version of Windows 7 is actually the best if I just want to play some games, browse the web, and listen to music... nothing crazy, just basic stuff. I've got 4GB of RAM, an Intel quad 2 Core Q8400, an Nvidia GTX 260, and a 1.5 TB drive. Maybe even Windows 8 would work? ...

Hey everyone, I’ve got a question for you all... whenever I restart my PC, it hits that "starting Windows" screen, and just as those colors are about to pop up, this little red dot appears and everything just freezes solid. It won't go any further. But then, if I kill the power, wait a bit, and boot it back up, it works perfectly fine. It isn't some massive, catastrophic problem or anything, but it's driving me nuts wondering why it does that... all my hardware seems to be running totally fine otherwise. Does anyone here know what's going on or dealt with something like this before? Thanks!
