Gerald Flores63 said:The whole 32-bit versus 64-bit thing is basically just about how the processor handles data, you know? A 64-bit setup is way more efficient when you're throwing massive amounts of RAM at it, so honestly, just go ahead and do a clean install... personally, I don't see much difference between 32 and 64-bit, they both run fine for me. Some people swear 32-bit is faster, others say 64-bit wins, but for me, 🤷

alright, thanks for the info. we'll see how it goes, I guess. hey, do you happen to use MSN? I'm running into some weird issue with MSN and it's driving me crazy...

Gerald Flores63 said:doesn't matter, just switch it over. this is actually a pretty solid joke...🙂

oh, one more thing. here’s what I’m running right now:
ASROCK G31M-S R2.0
Dell Inspiron with Nvidia GTX 260
Intel 2 Core Quad q8400
DDR2 Kingston 800Mhz 4 GB
Hitachi 320 GB , Seagate 1 TB

so, what version of Windows 7 should I go with? I can't wrap my head around this... when I install Home Premium, the system gives me this crappy rating, but then I swap to Premium and suddenly everything looks great. I don't get it at all, man...

man, how should I know, it says right here my processor is 64-bit... the only issue is I've only got 4GB of RAM so it won't even use all of it, but who cares, right? xD

Hey Fosna, what happens if I decide to switch over to a 32-bit system? I mean, my processor is definitely 64-bit, so does that actually matter at all? Like, would everything just run like total garbage or what...

Benjamin King2 said:Look, just try switching the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE in your BIOS first... then just run a Windows repair and see if that fixes the mess... I’ve been digging through some old tech forums trying to make sense of this mess, and honestly, it’s just one big headache after another... you try to fix one tiny thing in the system files and suddenly the whole OS decides to throw a tantrum. It’s like you’re walking on eggshells with Windows 7, especially when you're dealing with those integrity errors that pop up out of nowhere... The whole situation with the SFC command and how it handles corrupted files is just exhausting if you aren't careful. You think you've got everything under control, maybe you've even upgraded from the old days of Windows XP or struggled through the nightmare that was Windows Vista, but then Windows 7 hits you with a corruption error and you're right back to square one... staring at a progress bar that feels like it's moving in slow motion while your hardware sits there doing absolutely nothing useful... It really makes you wonder why these things aren't more streamlined, because chasing down every single little file error feels like a full-time job I never applied for... just endless loops of scanning and repairing only to find out the damage goes way deeper than a simple command can fix... turns out, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and deal with the fallout before the whole machine becomes a glorified paperweight...

My BIOS doesn't even have that option... AHCI and all that stuff... believe it or not... heh. And I've got another issue on my hands, I don't even have a DVD or CD drive anymore, because last time I tried to boot up one of my discs it basically shattered inside the tray and I got so spooked I just ripped the whole thing out of the machine...
So, I've been messing around with using a USB stick to boot up Windows and stuff like that, but for some reason, the whole autorun thing just isn't showing up when I'm running it from the drive...

Benjamin King2 said:To get into Safe Mode, you just gotta mash the F8 key while the thing is booting up, just keep hammering it until that menu actually pops up... And look, both your GPU and your CPU are total power hogs, so if you're running some random off-brand power supply, that 550W rating is basically a lie... Open up the case and check how many Amps that PSU puts out on the 12V rail, it'll be right there on the sticker, you really ought to see at least 30A there.

I don't even use MSN.

I've got a Superflower SF550P-14P 550 Watt in there.
Alright, I'm gonna try rebooting the rig and see if I can get into Safe Mode like you said...
Just tried it and it's totally bricked, it just hangs right on '' \DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS\

Benjamin King2 said:What's the deal when you run it in Safe Mode? If it's still freezing even in Safe Mode, then we're probably looking at some kind of hardware failure here. What kind of power supply are you running? And what do you mean by saying the build is "new"... those components are easily four years old, right?

Man, I don't know, I haven't tried Safe Mode yet because I have no clue how to actually do that, haha. I've got a 550W ATX... and I guess I mean they're "new" from the store, you know? Like, I know they aren't brand new out of the box, but they were bought recently and stuff... if you catch my drift...

Anyway, it was working fine, and honestly, it usually works great. It's just this thing that bugs me whenever I hit restart. I just installed Windows Live Messenger and now I gotta reboot the PC, and now I'm sitting here stressing that it's gonna freeze again, so I'm debating whether I should even bother restarting it or not... hehe. Plus, I've got this other headache with MSN where it runs, but when I try to click on a contact, nothing happens :S it looks like it's open in the taskbar, but the actual window just won't pop up... any idea what's going on?

Alright, I’m gonna ask this again since nobody actually bothered to answer my last post... so here we go. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and every single time I reboot or just shut the thing down, when I try to boot it back up, it just hangs forever on that "Windows starting" screen. It totally freezes up on me, and the only way I can get anything done is to force a hard shutdown, wait like five minutes, and then it finally works... why the hell is this happening? Can anyone please help me out here... I even tried running Windows XP and it does the exact same thing, which makes zero sense because the whole rig is brand new...

Intel Core 2 Quad q8400
DDR2 Kingston 800Mhz 4 GB

Gerald Flores63 said:He's right about that. Once you fire up a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or even Windows 8, they actually recognize and utilize the full 4GB, but that old 32-bit Windows 7 just hits a wall at 3GB...

Man, I'm just glad I could help you out with this, because honestly, you could've found info here about how those 32-bit versions can squeeze out maybe up to 3.50 GB of RAM if you're lucky... 🙂 catch ya later

Gerald Flores63 said:So I went ahead and installed Windows 7 64-bit on one partition and then slapped Windows 8 64-bit on another. I've got 4 GB of RAM total, but when I check the Properties on both versions of Windows, they both show 4 GB, yet there's this "usable" amount in parentheses saying only 3.19 GB... wait a second, what gives? Does 64-bit actually have the same kind of limits that 32-bit does?

You gotta get into your BIOS under the CHIPSET settings and tell the system to actually use all the RAM you've got available... I ran into the exact same thing on my rig, so I just went in and fixed it myself...

Hey. I’ve got a question for you guys... so, right now I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on this rig: Intel Core 2 Quad q8400, 4GB of DDR2 (400 MHz), an Nvidia GTX 260, and a 1.3 TB HDD. Here's the deal... whenever I boot up or restart the PC, it hits that "Windows is starting" screen and just completely freezes. Every single time. Like, every time I shut down, hit reset, or whatever... basically, if I flip the switch on my power strip to 0, wait maybe two or three minutes, then flick it back to I and try to boot, it works fine. But I can't get back to Windows XP or any other OS without it hanging indefinitely... help???

driftingnomad68 said:Those aren't inputs, they're outputs. Honestly, I have no clue what you're even talking about here...
If you can hook up your monitor using DVI or HDMI, just do it, because those are digital connections and they're way better than that ancient, outdated VGA crap.

man, I just picked up this new 22-inch monitor and it's Full HD 1920*1080, and my graphics card actually has that HDMI port you were talking about, so if I used an HDMI cable to link the monitor and the card, would the picture actually look better? Like, specifically when I'm gaming? Or watching movies? Or just everything in general...?
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
driftingnomad68 said:Obviously using a DVI or HDMI cable is gonna be way better than sticking with old-school VGA.

well, yeah, but then why on earth would they even bother putting both HDMI and DVI ports on a graphics card if that was the case... :S
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Benjamin King2 said:Wait, you're saying Windows 7 has better graphics than XP??? What is that even supposed to mean?

I don't get what you mean by "getting an HD picture"... your image quality stays the same regardless of which connector you plug your monitor into, the only actual difference is that HDMI carries both audio and video signals instead of just video...

Where's my reply coming from? :S

Man, look, I'm just saying that when I'm playing a game using an HDMI cable, the graphics look better, the picture is cleaner and all that stuff... so I figured the whole point is that the image will be sharper across the board, you know? hh but if there isn't actually any difference, then why bother even hooking it up?

Taylor Morales31 said:Instead of just tearing you down, maybe try actually helping him out with his 👍
question...
Look, Maki, honestly, with the massive amount of RAM you're rocking, you really shouldn't be hitting any snags with gadgets, unless some of those non-Microsoft ones are just dragging down your startup speed, like they need a second to breathe before they finally hit the desktop

oh, thanks man 🙂 xD

Douglas Garcia52 said:So the biker finally rolls in to see if anyone spent the whole week trashing everything, all while preaching about how XP was actually better😛

@swiftdriver30, look, you might be pretty talented and all, but if we're being real😉 -you're also kind of illiterate😁 (check my post on the previous page)

Man, don't even start with me! :P I wrote that perfectly fine😁 and instead of picking on me, you could've actually helped me out with my question...

Benjamin King2 said:Just take a look at Task Manager and see how much RAM they're actually sucking up...

Look, I already stripped them out via Windows features, so now I'm feeling too lazy to go back in and turn them back on, I was just asking for the hell of it, haha

hey everyone, quick question for you all... how much are those gadget guys actually dropping on a weekly basis? I mean, is it even worth trying to keep up with them? xD

Look, I can see for myself that I'm getting the full 4 GB... there's no way it says that if it isn't actually working. -.- And honestly, I don't feel like apologizing to anyone because I know what I'm seeing, and nobody can tell me otherwise when they haven't even looked at my screen. Btw, you guys just posted two pictures of Windows. Also, I had a quick question—I did a little upgrade on my rig yesterday, tossed in an Nvidia gtx 260 and a 1 TB hard drive, but my score is still stuck at 5.9... maybe that's because I'm still running everything off my old 320GB main drive? That's where I got the 5.9 score, even though my graphics card scored higher...
