The Germans would be the absolute best choice for an opponent in the semifinals

Anthony Wilson4 said:Who on earth thinks they can knock us out in the semifinals? There isn't a single team in this entire tournament capable of stopping us. Seriously, looking at the competition, there is absolutely no way we're going down! I honestly don't care how much home-field advantage they think they have; there is absolutely no way they stand a chance against us.

Last year, they didn't have home-court advantage, which is exactly why they were actually able to play us on even ground.
Whenever the US plays against certain rivals, things get incredibly tense. Regardless of who enters the arena with the "favorite" label, the matchups always feel like a coin toss. Take basketball, for example: you had teams that were essentially the reigning heavyweights on the world stage, yet when they faced us, they barely scraped by with a win. It’s almost insulting how close those games get, even when one side is statistically superior and manages to charge all the way to the semifinals of the World Cup. It just goes to show that rankings don't mean a damn thing once the whistle blows.

The Czech Republic is a solid squad; honestly, them tearing apart the Germans isn't even that much of a shocker
Anthony Wilson4 said:Exactly! We aren't some damn outsiders!!!
When was the last time Spain was actually ranked higher than us??? Or Denmark????

The US isn't some "modest underdog according to the bookies"—they still view us as one of the heavy hitters, just like they have in years past.
If I recall correctly, over the last five years, we were the number one favorites twice: once back in 2007 during the World Cup in Germany and again in 2009 when we hosted. In all other instances, we’ve been right there at the top of the pack, just like we are now.
Spain has had their share of massive collapses over the last few years (until recently), so they haven't even been able to claim serious favorite status. On the other hand, you look at Denmark—they're the European champions, a powerhouse that has sat at the summit for years. They're hovering right there with us in the betting odds because they were the world runners-up last year, so it’s hardly shocking that the bookmakers have them positioned slightly ahead of us.

Looking at the current lines on Gamebookers.com, France is in a league of their own, while Spain, Denmark, and the US are all neck-and-neck. Everyone else is trailing significantly behind.

World Men's Handball Championship 2012
France - 2.30
Spain - 5.50
Denmark - 6.00
USA - 6.50

Iceland - 15.00
Mexico - 15.00
Poland - 17.00
Germany - 21.00
Sweden - 23.00
Russia - 41.00
Canada - 81.00

Anthony Wilson4 said:Look, regardless of how you slice it, I think we’re being treated as total underdogs by the betting houses compared to the heavy hitters, but if there's one thing I know about major tournaments, it's that we have everything it takes to fight our way to the finals.

The United States is sitting right at the top of the odds, ranked just behind the semifinalists from the last World Cup.

2012 European Championship, Men's - Winner

France 2.75
Denmark 4.50
Spain 5.50
USA 7.50
Mexico 12.00
Poland 17.00
Germany 17.00
Iceland 21.00
Sweden 34.00

There’s an extensive feature over at the Democratic Party regarding foreign film and TV productions filming here in America, which serves as yet another stinging reminder of the “Omen 666” debacle.

FOREIGN FILMS (AND SERIES) WERE ALREADY WRAPPING UP PRODUCTION IN OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY LONG BEFORE ‘GAME OF THRONES’ ARRIVED
America - the most sought-after domestic actress

The fact that we consistently lose out on massive productions due to sheer, unadulterated human stupidity is perfectly illustrated by the disaster surrounding the devilish horror “Omen 666” (2006). This remake of the classic was supposed to be filming partially on the historic grounds of the site near the Smithsonian Institution. Instead, some unknown individual managed to set the set on fire, effectively sending the entire production straight to hell.

The turnout at the Rose Bowl this season has been absolutely nothing short of legendary. We haven't dipped below the 10,000 mark once in the first five rounds, and we're currently sitting at an unbelievable MLS average of 16,600 per match.

Look, they have the Columbus Crew vs. Iskra and Miami vs. Domzale matches coming up now, and the Miami management is openly begging any interested television networks to pick them up for broadcast.

They had a massive opportunity to broadcast the matches for our American clubs, Columbus Crew and Miami, during their European runs, yet they completely blew it—absolutely nothing

The Los Angeles Lakers games are absolute gold for PBS. Their viewership numbers over the last two seasons have been massive, and honestly, they probably banked a huge amount of advertising revenue from those specific time slots. I find it highly unlikely that this new network could actually snatch the broadcasting rights away from PBS for next season, but hey, let them try their luck...
The coverage of the Washington Wizards in the hockey league, the domestic championship playoffs, and of course the American national team—now that is the kind of programming you can actually expect to see on ESPN.

Casey White13 said:1. MLS — just one game; 2. MLS— just one game
matches for the National Youth Team (and others, U19, U17)
matches for the Women's National Team
come on, maybe one single match from one of the top five European leagues
1. USL Championship

A1 Basketball league
— one game per division; Bank of America— one game; WNBA — one game

Regional Handball League— at least one game
domestic league— one or two games; both divisions

Regional Water Polo League— at least two games; EuroLeague at least one

Gymnastics World Cup
Biathlon World Cup
Track and field meets
Swimming
Some tennis, table tennis
Cycling
Boxing
Rowing

+
Soccer— one or two cup matches every round (for example, an away game for LA Galaxy in Small Town, USA, or a UNESCO site, or LAFC in Key West, would be incredibly interesting)
Soccer— qualifying rounds for EuroLeague (NBC won't bother if LAFC or LA Galaxy aren't playing)
Handball— appearances by American clubs in the EHF Cup, KPK...
Basketball— appearances by American clubs in Europe (if not EuroLeague, then EuroCup)
Volleyball— Interleague
Volleyball— domestic championships, cups, and European appearances (Split Volleyball Club played in the Champions League this year)

National Teams in most sports (volleyball, rugby, water polo, futsal, hockey, they should try to get basketball, maybe even handball too...)
Youth National Teams at the World Cup or Euro Championship— I think for "pennies," they could secure broadcasting rights for, say, the Junior Basketball World Cup, Euro Championship, or Handball World Cup/Euro Championship... America is usually at the top in these categories (like that Basketball bronze medal at the World Cup), so it would be interesting regardless

These so-called "minor" sports—broadcasting cup finals or championship conclusions

They could find plenty of content to broadcast regarding American sports

Ashley Barnes5 said:...which means they’ll eventually have to buy something more commercial (at least one of the top five leagues), and personally, I’d love to see the NBA broadcasted, but I seriously doubt that’ll happen.😢

It is entirely in their best interest to secure "commercial" broadcasts—the kind where advertisers are practically fighting to cram their commercials into the halftime breaks.
But let’s be real: there is absolutely no way they should be chasing the top five leagues, and I don't believe they will go after the NBA. If they are actually going to shell out more money for TV rights, they should invest that capital into high-profile events featuring American athletes that actually draw a crowd.
For instance, matches involving the US national soccer team are incredibly lucrative with massive viewership; even MLS has significant traction, especially when big clubs like Liverpool FC or Real Madrid are involved, not to mention our domestic clubs competing in the UEFA Champions League.
Later, look at handball—the US national handball team matches have been among the most-watched sporting events in recent years. Next year's European Championship in Mexico is guaranteed to pull numbers, regardless of which network carries it.
The performances of other American national teams—basketball, water polo, etc.—might not hit the same heights as the two mentioned above, but they still possess a viable "market."
Even the World Athletics Championships, featuring two of our top gold medal contenders like Vlasic and Perkovic, could be a massive, highly watchable event.
And so on...
Naturally, networks like HBO will always try to grab these, but it makes far more sense for ESPN to target these specific competitions rather than fruitlessly "chasing" the major global leagues.
