quietskipper17 said:exactly that 👍 my commute to work 12 miles involves riding my bike from April through November; the rest of the year depends on whether the weather permits...

If I lived closer to 3.1 miles I’d be out there all year round without a second thought...

What are you people complaining about? My ride to work is barely a mile 🙂 That's it 1.6 miles!

Still, it's ridiculous how I managed to get soaked to the bone in just five minutes. Left the house under clear skies and a summer sun, then a downpour hit two minutes later. Done for.

The number of cyclists on the road increases every single day.
I saw groups of them riding in lines just yesterday.

I’ve even started recognizing faces. We pass each other at almost the exact same spots daily.

Seems that way to me too. I was wandering through downtown this morning and there were two or three cyclists at every single light, with more on the opposite side... it definitely wasn't like this last year. High gas prices have clearly pushed people toward bikes.

Now we're seeing actual little convoys out there. Lol.

Arthur Ross said:And yeah, I was sweating like hell.
I wore running/cycling pants, a basic undershirt, a long-sleeve cycling jersey, and a jacket from Lidl, plus gloves, an ear warmer, and a Buff. After just 3.1 miles, I was already stripping layers off.
The undershirt was useless. Maybe a short-sleeve jersey under the jacket next time.

Just great.🙂.

Haha, nice one!
Last winter, I was stuck wearing a heavy coat, a puffer jacket, and half a dozen other layers when it was only 40°F. By the time I hit the bike shop, I was soaking wet and stripping down to short sleeves. Just dress lighter. Suffer through five minutes of being cold until you warm up, then it's fine.🙂

Alright, let's see who's out there... anyone actually brave enough to commute to work or campus this morning?

I just took a walk after work with an umbrella.🙂

Can you actually see inside the house, or are the curtains closed?
Charles Bailey45 said:I considered putting together an FAQ to explain why investing in a higher-end bike upfront actually pays off, plus some general price-to-usage guidelines—mostly to stop the repetitive posts we've all seen. But experience tells me nobody actually reads a massive FAQ, let alone the opening post in a "Which bike should I buy?" thread. So, what's the point? 🙂

It's a lost cause. It’s just the same loop over and over again. Still, that's the reality.
Thanks

Hheheh. Work's been pretty thin lately. 🙂 So that’s what that means. Total garbage. Heading out for coffee now.
You're welcome.
Hey there, folks.

Stuck at work with nothing to do, so I’m scrolling through this forum again while keeping an eye on bike listings in another window. Looking at the prices... everything is way above the average American salary. It’s no wonder the most sought-after bikes on here are the budget ones. $833.

If the average BMX is... $833Folding bikes. A niche market. $1500With a $1,000 budget, let's be realistic about what you're actually getting from a hardtail mountain bike with disc brakes. Don't expect much more than an entry-level machine. $833 Who’s getting hit with the most questions in this thread?Which bike to buy? Depends on what you're actually planning to do."?

I took a look at the prices for those little mountain towns recently. Most of them are way overpriced. $1333It’s easily north of a thousand bucks at this point. Honestly, it leaves me with the distinct impression that these people are just... $833 Substandard.🤷

Most requests follow the same pattern: they want to ride around Mount Rainier, hit some trails, or just cruise the streets on their way to the office. They’re looking for a solid all-around bike because there isn't enough cash to justify anything more specialized. Give me a recommendation. $833.
If you’re actually planning on dropping serious cash for that ridiculous bike—the one that supposedly jumps, talks, and does everything under the sun—you might as well dig even deeper into your pockets. Might as well go all in.🙂

Looking at mountain bike prices across the board again. I'm getting the impression there isn't a single quality build out there worth the money. $833 Except for those occasional flash sales.

What’s your honest take on this?

Same here. I wouldn't step foot on a subway in the summer even if they paid me. Doesn't matter how hot it is outside or how much I sweat; being in the AC is five times better than walking in the shade. And don't even get me started on the speed. Biking wins every time. 🙂

The worst part is riding past a bus or a train stuck in traffic while some idiot sits there staring blankly at nothing.🙂

Today I was waiting at a light in NYC on my bike. Looking west, three lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic. Looking east, the same thing. Then I look right in front of me, and there’s this guy sitting in the middle of an intersection in his car, completely lost on what to do next. 😢 I just smirked. Glad I'm not stuck in that mess like I used to be a few years back.

Do companies you work for provide secure bike storage, or are you stuck leaving yours out by the front entrance?

now my only problem is finding a spot to tie him up, assuming the office doesn't have some corner out of sight.
any suggestions? my office is right on the Square.

Hey neighbor, I'm over in New Ves.

From what I can see, there's a spot "against the wall" down by the Rubelj scaffolding where everyone racks their bikes. Over in Harmica, it would be decent since there's cover, but there's nothing. There are spots in the courtyards... but it would be easiest if you could use a railing at the office entrance or just inside the building itself. Of course, I'd recommend an U-lock.

Jerry Howard said:It looks like more people will start biking to work since gas prices are skyrocketing.

Sure. One day my tank is at Typhoon 10:30 liters... if I had to rely on the car constantly, I’d sell it just to stop the bleeding. I balance it—roughly 75% bike and 25% car. It works.

I get the feeling there are more commuters biking to work or campus in the city this year. What's your take?

Started commuting by bike this spring after moving. The ride to work is mostly 1.9 miles downhill 😉. Ten minutes isn't enough time to actually break a sweat. Change at the office—keep my work clothes there—wet wipes, deodorant. I deal with clients daily. Need to look sharp and smell decent. :-)
Store the bike in a small utility room near the restroom.

Walked to work for a year. Avoided those steep hills on the way back. Spent that year building stamina—walking, swimming, hiking. Finally got on the bike. Turns out, the incline doesn't feel so daunting anymore 🙂 (for those in Cleveland, think: from the Pyramid to Mr. Vežica 😁). Twenty minutes and I'm home.
Sure, I arrive soaked. Doesn't matter.

Use a small cycling backpack with ventilation. My metabolism is high regardless. 🙂

An enlightening experience, all things considered. 👍

Nice work.👍
Trying to convince my friends to ditch the cars for bikes. One called me yesterday saying he finally tried it and loved it.🙂

Here’s an interesting read on Copenhagen and some great shots of the locals commuting—whether it's to work, campus, or just getting around:

jadetiger962 said:I don't bother riding around town with them since I have no reason to lug all that weight to work. A delivery box on the rear rack does the job just fine—similar to those scooter delivery boxes.

There are bike boxes too... see, see... sounds better than a basket. Got a link for one in NYC?

I cycle to work with a backpack too. Ten minutes in and my back is soaked😢, but this month I’m buying a pannier and the biggest basket available to mount on the rack. Goodbye, backpack. 👍

Since it's hot and I've ditched the jacket, I just bought one of those small waist packs for my keys, phone, wallet, cigarettes, and lighter. That's it. 🙂

Maybe later I'll get a front basket for bread and milk on the ride home... I'll look like an old lady, but at least my back stays dry. 🙂

There’s also that loud trumpet, like the number one pistol from Alan Ford, making its presence known 🙂
